So long as its flush with the top of the visible screen it is fine. More menu bar is available. The initial mock up sucks and if that is they way it goes I'll keep my 13pm. No way that happens IMO.

Now I can see them doing that teardrop at the very top of the screen though and that would be fine.

Interesting. The old Home Button and Face ID notch has provided lots of instant visual recognition (free marketing?) in TV, film, advertising, signage, print, etc. This pill shaped thing looks just like everything else.

I still don't know why Apple don't just throw away FaceID and pop the fingerprint scanner in the power button just like on their iPads.
The iPhone 13 is my first FaceID device and I LOVE it. Especially this winter, it’s been terrific to just life the phone and access it without having to take off gloves. I know that some people don’t like it because it’s terrible when on a desk and you just want quick access, but that feels more like a gripe to me after using FaceID for over a month.

Still not getting why there’s so much notch hate, I hardly notice it
13 Pro Max is my first notch phone. I thought I would absolutely hate it, but I don’t really notice it. Still, it would be super cool to have a full screen phone without a notch. When I do notice the notch, it’s a bit of an eyesore, IMO.

I don’t think that the iPhone 14 (Pro) will look like this. Apple is making the notch their recognizable aesthetic. Look at icons that depict iPhones and now the new MBP design, that will will be around for years.

I’d bet on a smaller notch. They shrink the notch on the iPhone 13 Pro and will shrink it even further (and maybe make it less tall).
Like the chin on the iMac, the notch is now ICONIC to Apple’s designs. I don’t think they’ll get rid of it anytime soon until they can put the camera under the screen.

Yes that pill shape looks far better than a smaller hole punch featured on every cheap android that actually takes up less space. Seriously? Just for the sake of having a ‘distinct’ look? 🤦‍♂️

No offense but some of you are completely brainwashed by Apple’s branding and marketing, so much so that having a wider hole on a phone is somehow better than a smaller one.

No offense taken 🙂

I do agree the ‘pill’ would take up more space.

But it’s not just for the sake of distinctiveness – the ‘pill’ seems more balanced and symmetrical, thereby more aesthetically pleasing (to me, at least).

I think I’d find an off-centre ‘hole punch’ a lot more of a distraction than the notch or proposed ‘pill’.

Google and Samsung had it right a few years ago. Fingerprint sensor on the back, where your index finger naturally rests when holding the phone. Why they got rid of that in favor of finicky under display sensors makes no sense!

This is a guess at best as we really don’t know what type of cameras will be placed under the screen
So far we’ve heard a whole punch now a pill shape and I saw somewhere oval shaped. Nobody really knows

I currently have the iPhone 12 Pro and don't mind the "notch" at all. I wouldn't mind this design either.

Because it’s more natural to have a fingerprint sensor on the front of the display for unlocking & manipulation. The technology wasn’t ready yet to embed a fingerprint sensor under the display, hence why they likely chose to use the rear of the phone for a fingerprint sensor as a temporary work-around.

And it wasn’t as manageable as you think with the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. If you have small-er hands, and trying to unlock the phone one-handed was not always easy. You would have to hold the phone with two hands to reach the rear unlock sensor on the back of the phone, which is just even more cumbersome.

All I know is I used a Pixel 3 for a couple of years and loved the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. It was a natural way to access the phone with a finger. No, it wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t unnatural and my 6S never felt “more natural” than my pixel. In fact it was just the opposite as the rear sensor felt natural and made a ton of sense.
