They're not large clasps relative to the belt though, but yes, they could have squared the corners a bit more and reduced the size a bit. That definitely would have made it more gender neutral. Not sure why they didn't do this (more sales if available in both sizes).

I agree. They've made some comments that seem to imply that they may have more accessories come out for the watch after launch. I took that to mean that they may be evaluating watch bands, and possibly colors of watches.

I'd lay money on them putting out a rose gold and a yellow gold aluminum watch in the future (to match the iPhone colors, as "rose gold" is running around the rumor mill as a possible new iPhone color). People like the look, and they'd clearly not look like the Edition. They need to sell the Edition models out first, though.

So, maybe us sitting around talking about buckles and bands on the Internet could catch the eye of someone who knows someone who is designing bands. One never knows. ;)

Stretching of the leather shouldn't be an issue. The description says, "We also added an inner layer of Vectran weave for strength and stretch resistance. It’s the same material NASA used to make the landing airbags for the Mars Rover spacecraft."

As to the question of whether it looks feminine, my opinion is that it is elegant and either gender could comfortably wear it without raising eyebrows, but it is more feminine that most of the straps. That's fair: the steel link strap is masculine, imo.

Argh. I missed that when I was reading about the straps, but I was on my phone at the time. Thank you for that info! I feel comfortable with the choice of a medium. I do want it to fit snugly, but tight would be aggravating.

More color options would go a long way with the modern buckle

love that red!!!

Back to reality, I'm going to purchase soft pink and will protect with leather conditioner before wearing, will hope for replacements in a gorgeous red before it gets too funky-looking!

Those are nice.

I'm really annoyed that there's no red option for SS.

And that there are no other options for bands for the Black SS.

I am really tempted to go for that soft pink. I think I'd wind up looking slouchy. You reckon leather protector would keep it nice?

I Use Apple Brand (not related to Apple electronics) on Leather Purses before using and the leather cleaner on light leathers that get dirty and it works pretty well.

Apple brand is available on Amazon.

Should work on the watch bands.

Funny. I think the modern buckle looks perfectly gender neutral. And as for that pic showing the buckle being oh so large, some of you seem to be ignoring that it's screwed up in terms of perspective due to being photographed so closely. This causes it to be seen as much larger than the elements behind it. Like photographing your own nose from 1 foot away.

Anyway, I think the SS + black modern buckle looks acceptably masculine. I do think the other colors are less so. I do not think it's the buckle that is the issue, but, the color choices. And frankly, the design of the clasp is the most interesting and appealing thing. The "classic" buckle offers zero design innovation and just looks cheap to me. And there is no way the milanese loop looks more masculine than this modern buckle. I mean, have you guys even seen this band style in real life? It's like a disco ball of specular reflections.

I can not accept the connotation that masculine has to be extremely tedious, boring, and featureless (i.e. either variation of the link band, 1980's Casio anyone?) or inelegant and cheap looking, not to mention annoying to take off every day (classic buckle) or utilitarian (rubber band.)

What's even left? The leather tank tracks on the oversized 42mm only?

Honestly, if you have any taste for a classy look and lack the overemphasized fear of not being a macho man randy savage, I think the SS + Black Modern Buckle is the best men's option. Of course, I also believe in the classic wristwatch sizing which basically amounts to, anything over 39mm is too big unless you're an elephant, so, whatever. I'm almost certainly getting the SS + Black Modern Buckle. I am fairly confident my beard will compensate for any mistake in perception of just how "feminine" that band is ;)

(And yes, I realize OP is not concerned with looking masculine, not being a masculine individual and all, but, the conversation did go that way and I couldn't resist joining in.)

Oh and as a bonus, the manliest watch lover of all time, James Bond, wore this band style 90% of the time on his Rolexes:

So I think there's a lot more room for style choices than is being recognized here on a uh... nerd forum. Right. Just realized where I was participating.

I think thats why Apple brought out the modern buckle in black to appeal to men as well. I know others have disagreed with me on the modern buckle as its on the 38mm model only but I think its comes down to if you like it then wear it. I don't think people will stop you on the streets and criticize you for wearing a watch band with a larger clasp.

I think the black and the brown are both good choices that still would look quite masculine on the right man's wrist. Maybe even the navy. The pink might be iffy, as it's a ballet pink and not in the family of pinks that you often see men wearing.

You can rationalize all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that it's a feminine strap. Additionally, a majority of forum members are of the opinion that it's a ladies strap.

Erroneous conclusion as brown and midnight blue are already gender neutral colors. It's listed in feminine wrist sizes, meaning that Apple does not envision men wearing it.

It does cross over into mens wrist size, a slim male could pull it off. Its not fact of rationalization but difference of opinions and taste.

I would seriously compare it to the milanese loop - but unfortunately I am getting the 42mm watch. Otherwise I love it. It's simple, smart and looks great. My least favorite band is the classic buckle. IMO there's nothing unique about that one, but I guess that's why it's called the classic buckle...

Yes, it is difference of opinion, some of us here have a different opinion than yours. We all have different taste too.

It's a fact that some women are bigger than men so crossing over into men's wrist sizes isn't an opinion.

A majority of us are, however, of the opinion that the Modern Buckle is a feminine strap. You're free to disagree.

Sigh. Now I also want the modern buckle. But I want more color options, dammit.

Easy. Get the pink Modern Buckle and dye it red (either DIY or have a shop do it professionally).
