Hi folks,

I love reading all the wacky ideas about what the 'brick' could be, they're all valid in one form or another.

From a logical stance, the brick is likely to be an external GPU unit very similar to the one developed by ASUS - The XG Station. The idea of the external GPU is most suited to a product such as the MacBook as it would appeal to both camps, those who wish mobility in an modestly powered laptop, and those who wish more graphics power with an optional external GPU unit.

Not official but from a profitability perspective Apple could consolidate it's base manufacturing costs and give consumers only what they will actually use/want.

Thanks

Blu-ray + AppleTV

What if Apple wanted to solidify the AppleTV and include a Blu-Ray drive in with it?! I think that would be a show stopper if they could keep it competitively priced with the current players in the market. I know a lot of people would say that it would eat into its download sales but I don't think thats true at all. If your going to rent/buy blu-ray discs then your going to have one anyway. This would take away sales from the PS3 since most people are buying it because its a more capable blu-ray player at a lower cost than what's out there now. I would buy one if they were to do this!

Heck maybe this is going to be a huge announcement because they are updating everything to include a blu-ray drive: Macbook, Macbook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro, AppleTV -- that would be a very big announcement! I'd be updating my Macbook Pro and my parents AppleTV!

My predictions:

1. It will be a Brick, smooth with the Apple logo on top.
2. $199 for the White version, $299 for the Black.
3. It will come in a really, really nice box.
4. People will talk about it on this forum for the 2 weeks until it comes out.
5. When it comes out, there will be long, long lines around the Apple Store.
6. People who bought it online will keep hitting "Refresh" on their browser for Fedex.com.
7. You can only buy 2 at a time, eBay sellers will resell them on eBay for $1,000+.
8. A new "version" will come out next year, and everyone will regret they bought "this version"...

Enjoy... :D

Ha......... That made me laugh. The new and improved iBrick. I think you forgot the endless griping when the item has a few short falls..........

7a. Blaming Apple for poor quality control
7b. To many bad things going wrong with, rushed, etc.....
7c. A new version of the iPhone is released and everyone forgets about the iBrick..... :)

This is a nice brick...

Seriously, laser cut aluminum case. That's it. I don't know why everyone is turning this into some brand new product announcement. It's just new MB/MBP.

7d. Apple will continue to sell the iBrick, and people will buy. Then it won't be updated. Then there will be an never-ending forum thread on here, "Mac iBrick End of Life?"

:p

nVidia has also pushed the announcement of this new chipset from late September to October 14th, which implies Apple and nVidia will announce together.
That would explain the green in the picture.

All that article says is "macbooks aren't coming 10/14." No proof, no source, nothing. I could have written that.
It was from the same site that gave the MacBook Pro and MacBook Pro case leaks, which most people believed. So I guess people just pick and choose the rumors they want to believe in, right? Even if they're from the same site?

I'm sure if it said "MacBooks are coming 10/14," you all would be over that like crazy, saying "proof for 10/14 redesign" etc.

There have been much more credible sources that support the 10/14 release.
What's Daring Fireball's rumor record compared to tw.Apple.pro's?

Full disclosure, I want MBs as soon as possible. :)
I thought so.

I've been debating on whether or not to hold off on getting an AppleTV because of these brick rumors going around lately. Do you guys think that the brick will be in the Mac line or an AppleTV replacement?

There have been far more sources than just Daring Fireball that have pointed to 10/14. We have been hearing that date for some time now.

As for those case leak pictures, all they showed was aluminum, which has been widely reported, so no surprise there. And, it's not like you can count that as a track record since the product hasn't even been released. I put much more stock in someone like 9to5 who has actually had information that turned out to be true.

Well the proper term to refer to a mass of smelted aluminum is an "ingot" and not a "brick". Plus, one would machine a "billet" of aluminum to make a MB case, not a brick.

I expect Apple would not have released AppleTV firmware 2.2 if the "brick" was part of the AppleTV family. They would have waited and announced it at the same time.

I just saw TUAW pointing to that date.:D

The MacBook Pro one showed a battery compartment like that of the MacBook's, but that may have been speculated before.

Yeah, I think there's a higher chance of 10/14 over 11/x. But I'm prepared to believe the latter as the worst-case scenario.

Also, I remember in August that many sources pointed to September as a release date…

I am in no way sold on 10/14 yet, just wishful thinking. But like you said, I would say the chances of 10/14 are better than sometime in November.

i'm telling you guys

Listen its definitely going to be an AppleTV hardware refresh! They're going to add a slot loading Blu-Ray drive and dominate the blu-ray player market!

ps: Eventually they'll add game capabilities with an updated remote where you can download games from the app store and play them in HD!

There is absolutely no basis for any of this. At least plenty of analysts have talked about upcoming notebook updates (not to mention they are due for updates). All of these other wild guesses are just that, wild guesses.

Oh that would be sweeeeeeet! I think that may happen eventually since Apple wants to dabble in the gaming market. They are slowly pushing the iPod touch into the handheld market and the MBP is slowly being pushed for gaming as well. So I say its highly freakin' possible that soon we will be able to download games off of iTunes to play on AppleTV. But not now Apple has too much on their plate first they need to get the iPod Touch some respect as gaming device then the rest will follow.

9to5 better not wait until Sunday night to finally let us in on the secret, if there even is one. And there better not be 18 clues leading up to this "huge" news.

They already posted the 3rd clue on friday. Its a picture of an aluminum brick.
