I don't carry my iPad around in my pocket. Unless you have an iPad belt holster, a bigger screen for the iPhone makes sense for people who are on the run, and don't have their iPads with them at all times.

It wouldn't be un-Apple like at all for Apple to increase the screen size. It'd only be un-Apple like for them to change the aspect ratio.

The majority of iPhone users would enjoy a larger screen; not the minority.

I wouldn't mind a slightly larger screen but I still would like to be able to use my phone with 1 hand. Anything larger than a 3.7" makes it difficult while still holding the phone firmly.

It looks bad if they stretch it while leaving the huge bezel where the home button and mic is today. However if they can reduce or eliminate all that in future generations, then stretching the screen becomes more realistic, and in fact the aesthetic would actually improve from today's phone.

The real problem with stretching it only vertically is that you end up with a totally obtuse resolution. If you were to go 16x9 aspect, then that is 1138x640. And that's actually not quite 16x9 since 640 is not evenly divisible by 9. If you go with a more standard dimension on the longer side, the next best thing is 1152 as suggested in prior posts on the topic. But that is still a mess and very arbitrary since it isn't quite 16x9. You could go up 1152x648 and make it exactly 16x9 again, but why mess around with crazy resolutions like this? Just go 1280x720 and be done with it.

I agree but would increasing the resolution to 1280x720 and changing the aspect ratio to 16x9 cause problems for developers? If that's the case, I don't think Apple will want to do that.

OTOH, it wouldn't be the first time Apple made a significant change and told developers and end users "we're changing, deal with it" (case in point, the switch from G5 to Intel chips).

In this scenario, I can see apps that have not been updated to the new resolution running in the old resolution with black edges much like iPhone apps on the iPad (even in 2x mode).

Dock connector compatibility is a strong feature and there is already provision within it to add TB.

I have used iPhone one handed and see the benefit to that.

I saw a guy the other day whip out his iPad from his man Purse. That was a practical thing for what he was trying to accomplish. Besides when you have that many credit cards, business check books and contracts to process THAT DAY, a Man Purse makes perfect sense.

BTW TB on BOTH the 30 pin dock connector and inside the 1/8" jack gives you a non-end of chain TB device. :)

Rocketman

This doesn't even resemble the typically gorgeous Apple design.

It looks stretched throwing the aspect ratio out of whack, (no 16:9) and looks obscenely ugly.

The measly 4.0" display is horribly deficient.

If this is a fake, perhaps Apple will do better than this... or not

BULLCRAP this is true! Apple would make the bezel thinner then keep it the same and 'grow' the phone by a centimetre! As for the thickness, I think it will go to 8mm on the iPhone 5 or the same as current.
The only good thing with this design is the metal back!

And as for changing the dock connector? No, Apple are not instantly going to make all your add ons worthless. I think they will make a connector that works with both normal 30 pin stuff and thunderbolt.

Personally, in my opinion if it's worth anything, I feel if Apple DID grow the screen in length only, it would shrink the end bezels to only increase the overall length by 5mm at most. They could easily chop 5mm from the top and bottom bezels. Keep it the same thickness. But I pray they keep the exact same PPI too, now THAT would stick one up the Android and Windows phones!.

But, in reality, I really do think the iPhone 5 will have a different design, same wonderful 3.5" Retina screen, better camera front and rear, better battery life, LTE, dual core true A6 CPU and dual core PowerVR Series 6 GPU. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

they not going to abandon the 30 pin dock connector its been around for a long time and wayy to many accessories rely on it.

Wha What????

ah not interested in whatever the 5 looks like, I truly love my White 32GB 4S.

I liked the 4 as well, however the speed and performance increase on the 4S is way better, but still my all time favorite was my White 3GS 32gb.

I have the iPhone since the 3G but the 3GS was my fav, then the 4 was cool, and now I am just happy with my 4S :D

4S is the perfect iphone for this gen.. but the 5 need to take every thing to the next level..

I got news for you buddy! A man purse is a life changing thing! Try using one, and tell me if I'm wrong.

Jumping from a 3.5" to a 4" screen means you'd be adding less than a quarter inch to the height and width of the phone. And if the phone is thinner, it helps compensate for that.

I just don't think that 4" changes your ability to use the phone with one hand. Go pick one up in a store next time you get the chance.

i think that metal back just in the middle is ugly, and i hope it doesn't happen. it has to be the full back cover or nothing at all.

a bigger screen is a must if apple wants to keep on top, most new smartphones are sporting a 4" screen. if they don't go there now, i foresee a massive drop this refresh. more and more people want the bigger screens, they look great and feel just as good in the hand. iv held my aunts S2 and can easily use one hand.

i don't think the iPhone needs to go thiner, the iPhone 4/4s is perfect thickness.

Most other smartphones have been available with 4" PLUS screens for about 3 years now, yet the iPhone STILL sells more and more and more and more every single quarter let alone year. The facts state the complete opposite to what you have said.

35.1 million units of iPhones in the last quarter.

I saw it and thought...looks too much like a TV remote or something.

Then I thought...maybe that's what they will be going for...Apple TV...

Apple is not going to change the screen aspect ratio. Not do so would obsolete hundreds of thousands of apps. To get a bigger screen, they must enlarge it proportionately, reducing pixels per inch slightly. Thus, to get a four inch screen, they must make the device wider and/or shave the side bezel. I believe it will be the latter.

I'd enjoy a larger screen and a little bit of a larger phone. Not to the extent of the galaxy but a little larger would be really nice!

Exactly this.

Apple has 600K+ apps designed for 3:2. They've railed about Android fragmentation. There's no way in hell that they're changing the aspect ratio now. Larger screen? I'll buy that. But they'll be expanding it in both directions. In the mockups there's still the standard bevel on the left and right sides of the screens. You really think they'll expand upwards before using all of that space? My prediction is a 4" screen, same 960x640 resolution, screen goes right up to the side edges, slightly taller and wider device.

I totally agree with this comment. The tall, skinny screen (or wide and narrow in landscape) would create a nightmare for iOS app developers. I can't see that happening. If devs have to modify their apps for different screen ratios, quality will be forced to take a back seat. IMO, any size increase for the next gen iPhone will be proportional. The iPhone 4 and 4S are already retina displays, so that won't be an issue.

However, I really DO hope the screen is larger. Once I had the iPad2, I couldn't go back to intensive use of the iPhone. The screen size of the iPad made the iPhone way too small for anything but on-the-go use. I don't know if a 1/2-inch larger screen will make that much difference. I'd almost welcome a 7-inch iPad with 4G/LTE phone capability. This would be an appropriate bridge between the iPad and the iPhone, and possibly the best of both worlds. As it is, I use the iPhone on speaker most of the time, so a 7-inch iPad/iPhone combo wouldn't be an issue.

BTW, a 7-inch screen could be a perfect proportional, exact mid-size between the current iPad and iPhone screen sizes.

It better have a bigger screen. But that dock connector better be a flat out lie. I have way too much stuff using the 30-pin.

This looks seriously bad... I mean WTF, the back looks like it was designed by a five year old.

When it comes to screen size I'm all for it. However, I don't want a bigger phone so Apple better start thinking how to clean that surface from speakers, space hogging cams, buttons and fill that with pixels. Regarding that big ass 30 pin connector I wouldn't be surprised to see it go. I just hope it's replaced with micro USB and not some port that no-one uses. Regarding the over all design I don't think Apple wil come out with "iPhone 4 S(treached)". Instead it will be something completely different.

I don't know if anyone read my post from apple co. Or not ! But i think many of apple fans like me are thinking about buying the cell phones from other companies like samsung or HTC , because earlier apple had something to say ... It's design and features but now it seems to me that the company is in to just earning more money instead of being different from the others! They don't even try to have some changes to the design and most of us can guess what will be the features of the next generation! Like the 2nd gen. Ipad that when they released it i understand they want to earn more money and then they use retina display in the next gen. Though they could bring it into ipad 2 .
In sum, i think apple should respect its fans and instead of thinking about earning more money try to be innovative and bring up something new not something as same as before with little changes! They should follow the way that steve jobs prepared for them ! To be unique and to be the first! If not It will lose many of its fans like me! Tnx!

Unless Apple has something up their sleeve to allow for device-specific app downloads, they're not changing the aspect ratio.

I'm going to file that next to the 'Siri-Enabled Television' folder, because of this.

Also, if someone at Apple even just considered something remotely like that, they should immediately outsource the design department to Siemens.
