That's what everyone said about the 3G and the 4, until it came out that is. Same thing happens every time.

Except for we had actual images of the device when that was going on, right now we have a frankenphone built off the iPhone 4 hacked together in photoshop. Not even an artists rendering. So therefore, it is ugly.

That mockup is so ugly I want to throw sulfuric acid in my eye, it's like bad press for the next iPhone with idiots actually thinking the next iPhone looks like that.

Trust me there's plenty of people asking about virtual keyboards for the new iPad ....

If the battery life gets any worse on my iPhone I'm going to have to switch. My 4S barely lasts through the day and that's with 3G and Bluetooth off (features I'd like to use when on the move).

Same thickness, better battery for the 5th gen iPhone, thanks!

I don't know what is wrong with everyone on this thread. You guys complain just to complain. I'm fine with this if it is the new design. Thinner and bigger screen. What's the problem? I can only hope the naysayers go to android or buy used iphone 1's. Sheesh . . .

4.0 would be nice to finally get some widgets on the screen. the icon grid view is getting so boring after owning 3 iPhone generations.

=imgonephishin;14811161Agreed. There's ten years of 3rd party devices (docks, speakers, keyboards, etc.) with that connector and now they'll all be worthless.

They won't be worthless, they can still be used on the current iOS products. Other third party accessories will be designed to match the new USB conector! Everything changes with time, no technology is to stay here forever. Am a bit more concerned about the aspect ratio! That could be really pain in the ar** for the developers and also for users, if the apps will have black bars on the side.

I'd prefer a slightly wider phone than one that's slightly taller. Looks ugly that way I think.

Agreed. No reason to change the aspect ratio. Just make the iPhone 5 the awesome update that I've been waiting by making the screen 4" wide, change the UI slightly so it's not as cramped and make the notifications center do more than bother me.

4", but retain same aspect ration.
...

Agreed as well. I'd rather have a phone that's not long and thin.

The only possibility I would think about is using the extra strip of screen space in a novel way - meaning replacing the home button with a touchscreen strip that lets you make hotkeys to go instantly to camera, or contacts, or something. When being used in landscape, the screen will be your usual retina 960x640, and the strip will remain on the left where the home button had been previously, or can be moved to the right side, and normally stays dark, except when activated, so the extra screen space isn't that noticeable. Also, the extra bit of screen all be handled through iOS, so no rewriting of apps would be necessary.

I do think the most likely scenario is they keep the current screen.

that mockup is the ugliest phone i have ever seen! no way would an apple phone look like that! surely not??!!

Most mockups I see are really ugly. Maybe they'll get rid of the glass back but no way do I see them going back to some ugly black band on the top or bottom. Reporting rumors is one thing but I wish sites would refrain from mocking up stuff as they're usually so bad at it.

What are the benefits of a longer iPhone? If anything, a wider screen is more essential since it would make typing easier and would allow iPad like gestures to be incorporated.

If the next iPhone looks anything like this, for the first time ever I'll give some serious thought about jumping ship to Android, or WP7. That design looks beyond bad.

So you would rather have an Andriod POS that looks like this instead? That makes no sense.

At first look the longer phone looks weird. But after a while I really like it. I get a nostalgic feeling of holding actual phones that are "long" like the classic "brick" phones from the 90s. It could be a unique differentiator.

Here Here,

you are absoultely correct sir, and i was on the same boat. so those who say its ugly let master of design Sir Ive decide what is ugly and what is a master piece :apple:
I sometimes wonder what Ive and team think when they see some of these fugly mockups floating out there. I know I cringe, especially when I see people refer to them as beautiful.

Guys we all need to chill out, it aint called MacRumors for no reason :) the next iPhone will be Apple's big flagship this year in the market. Whatever they're going to do, will have to benefit the developers and their large array of apps and be good to the people. Do you really think they would put out an ugly looking device and give app developers a time tough time dealing with a change of resolution? All I know is that Apple is filled with professionals who definitely know what they're doing! Unlike some companies, shooting out six bazillion different types of phones at a time.

Have some faith in the company! Steve Jobs may be gone in physical form but his spirit lives on!

There is something that bothers me but that is at the same time reinsurring about the "New Apple" (Steve Jobs death, Tim Cook CEO instead of Jon Ive or Scott Forstall, customer now being the mass market): on one hand, stupid latecomers of the mass market who are ignorant, uncreative and influencable will buy whatever crap they are sold and brag about it.

But on the other hand, no matter what even stupider fanboy of this board ask for, like fatter phone, smaller screen, same design instead of new (so many insults slip through mind but the only thing I will say is: you are officially worse than mass market sheeps who discovered Apple last year...) Apple will change it anyway
________________
Whether it's 3.95 or 4.05, Apple has to make the screen bigger while still matching the proportions, it should not only be slimmer because techs have evolved but also change design because the iPhone 4 factor was and is still a stupid ugly brick, and I hope they will innovate.

YES, instead of begging for Apple not to change anything like lots of people do on a friggin Apple board, and to make the iPhone crappy, I am amongst those Apple customer who still ask for innovations instead of lame incremental upgrades like iPhone 4S, iPad 2S/3, the Macbooks or even the iPod Touch or Mac Pro that haven't been updated at all.

I can't wait to see all the posts from people saying that this is ugly and blah blah blah. Bit once it comes out and they get their hands on it the whole attitude will change. If this is true than its great. Apple NEEDS to change. If this is so I would get one. But some die hard apple fans will resist this now and say its stupid or ugly or even apple made a huge mistake until its released then they will say this phone is the best there is and never admit they didn't like it.

But this isn't an Apple design/prototype. It's a mockup based on rumors of what the new phone might look like. Totally different than the phone that Gizmodo leaked. Steve Jobs will rise from the dead before Apple releases a phone that looks like this mockup.

I've finally stopped worrying that Apple will cave to the loud minority that are demanding bigger screens and thinner phones. Admittedly, I own an iPad and an iPhone so maybe that plays a part in why I don't want the iPhone to get any bigger. It functions perfectly the way it is. Sure, small things can be tweaked but the overall function of the phone is far and a way the best available. I really don't see the issue with the 3.5 screen other than Android has found a way to differentiate itself, which is fine by me (of course IMHO they also differentiate themselves by feeling cheap in the hand and having a laggy UI). I just finished reading the Hunger Games trilogy on my iPhone's 3.5 inch screen and I never thought twice about it. I've read at least 10 other full books on it and never had any problems and I wear glasses so my eyes aren't all that great. I will say my 70 year old mother prefers to use her iPad to read...

As another poster stated, I believe Apple thinks they have found the sweet spot on phones (evidenced by their massive sales vs other larger phones). Just because Samsung has something to talk about in their commercials, does not mean Apple will change the best selling phone of all time to be more like whatever plastic piece of junk just came out.
