I don't think it looks ugly, in fact I think it looks exactly the same albeit longer, I put my hand over the left side of the screen when I had the picture of the mock ups on from the OP and it looked exactly like an iPhone 4.

Different connection... I couldn't care less, means nothing to me when I plug it into the wall or my MBP.

Supposed to launch today as the next iphone killer.

Can we please stop using this outdated and terrible classification? No one's used it since 2008, most users will just buy the phone that suits them (apparently some flavor of Android) and most phone either match up with or edge past the iPhone depending on the user.

"iPhone Killer" is just a hype name that bloggers used to get iPhone fanboys fired up to start flame wars and drive up hits.

IM NOT BUYING IT IF IT HAS SeAMS!

guys remember those cry baby members?! lol

they are among us

show yourselves! :D

look im buying anything apple throws at me like it or not. they own us.

I had real doubts about this rumor, until I saw all the negative comments and got deja vu. Now I think this is exactly it, and will sell like hotcakes to the very people moaning now :p

(I do value battery life over thinness—but I wouldn’t put it past Apple to deliver both. As for fragmentation—true, some apps will run black-barred, but many apps already stretch automatically in just the way they need do: when you’re on a call on the green bar is at the top, the center area compresses. “Fragmentation" into just two screen shapes is an issue for developers, but hardly on the scale Android faces. And I for one would like an extra row of icons and more text. I’ll be curious about the landscape keyboard design though.)

There is something that bothers me but that is at the same time reinsurring about the "New Apple" (Steve Jobs death, Tim Cook CEO instead of Jon Ive or Scott Forstall, customer now being the mass market): on one hand, stupid latecomers of the mass market who are ignorant, uncreative and influencable will buy whatever crap they are sold and brag about it.

But on the other hand, no matter what even stupider fanboy of this board ask for, like fatter phone, smaller screen, same design instead of new (so many insults slip through mind but the only thing I will say is: you are officially worse than mass market sheeps who discovered Apple last year...)
________________
Whether it's 3.95 or 4.05, Apple has to make the screen bigger while still matching the proportions, it should not only be slimmer because techs have evolved but also change design because the iPhone 4 factor was and is still a stupid ugly brick, and I hope they will innovate.

YES, instead of begging for Apple not to change anything like lots of people do on a friggin Apple board, and to make the iPhone crappy, I am amongst those Apple customer who still ask for innovations instead of lame incremental upgrades like iPhone 4S, iPad 2S/3, the Macbooks or even the iPod Touch or Mac Pro that haven't been updated at all.

Looks like you need to check out the many Android options for more choices.

I don't get why people need a "new" design when what exists works just fine.

While taste is in the eye of the beholder, the 4/S is a beautiful classic design in the elegance and simplicity of BRAUN and Rams designs.

The iphone has matured to a design that IMO cannot be improved. So, what is left?

Totally different shape? I hope Apple doesn't fall for change for change sake.

I want the innards to be top shelf, faster , more GB, more battery power etc.

If anything, it would be great if they can make an iphone that doesn't need a case for protection or only minimal non size changing protection.

I don't really buy the argument that Apple will never change aspect ratio because it would cause "fragmentation".

The iPhone 4's "retina" display caused developers to have to consider multiple resolutions for their apps ("fragmentation"); universal apps for both iPhone and iPad have to support different resolutions (more "fragmentation).

iOS devices have different camera resolutions, some have forward facing cameras, some don't. Some have considerably superior graphics to others.

The iOS platform is already, to some extent, fragmented - and I don't wish to draw a comparison to android here.

Adding a slightly different AR to the mix is not really that significant at all, developers would cope. iOS (6?) would letterbox older apps just fine. The launcher would gain a new row of icons. The device would be much better for video.

I'd actually quite like a 16:9 iPhone.

Dear Lord, that is ugly. I'm ready to buy the new iphone in the fall, but not if it looks like a stretched iPhone 4. Ewww.

A 1280x720 screen at the same 326ppi density as the current iPhone would be 4.5" (actually 4.5049"). The current iPhone is just about 5" on the diagonal, and though it does not have a 16:9 aspect ratio (I'm talking about the phone itself here, not the screen which is obviously 3:2), it is very close to that. So this HD screen could theoretically fit on the phone.

If Apple doesn't find a way to put a screen like that on a future iPhone that remains roughly the same size as todays, then eventually the competition will. So when all those giant Android phones that people laugh at today are suddenly the same size as the iPhone but still carrying 1280x720 HD screens, then who's going to be laughing?

To me it is preposterous to think that Apple will never change the iPhone's screen size, resolution, and aspect ratio. Competition will force this upon them. At some point down the road the front of your phone will be essentially all screen just like the front of your TV is essentially all screen. Not a question of if, a question of when. IMHO.

Yes, taken from a German newspaper head line.

The kind of newspaper where blood runs out if you don't hold it level.
Same in England.

I would have been utterly SHOCKED if there weren't SOME sort of iPhone rumour circulating on or around the day that the SSGX3 is being released.

Not because Apple views SS as a threat by any means, but there has been a LOT of talk about Samsung's new offering and a lot of people are sitting on the fence between wanting to stick and see what Apple is offering in the lines of mobile phones next or experiencing one of the "supposed" most polished offerings from Samsung and Android.

I am kind of disappointed in the lameness of this particular rumour though. Meaning the mock up is very garbage and as others have mentioned highly unlikely.

So I am not really surprised that there is some sort of rumour about the next iPhone cropping up this week other than lame garbage about home buttons or liquid metal fastening etc. Apple has been notorious for jumping on other company's release dates with tempting whispers and rumours for us to sink our teeth into!

For those fanboys STILL against a larger than 3.5" screen, if Apple stays with 3.5" on the next iPhone they will absolutely lose market share in the long run. I'd bet anything on this. There is no way that they don't have a 4"+ OPTION at least - not to say they possibly will make two phone sizes, although doubtful (more likely the 4s will be the 3.5" option).

Changing the aspect ratio? No friggin' way they would do this. Then there would be THREE aspects ratios that developers (of which I'm one) would have to deal with - two is hassle enough.

They will certainly change the screen size and resolution in the future, but I still think no way on the aspect ratio. Of the three, that's the most difficult transformation and probably makes the least sense to do.

If the phone will only be taller; NO Thanks Apple!

I mostly use my phone for Podcasts, email and GPS. Switching to Android would be way to easy. My iPad on the other hand is not.

Please add a Poll.

1. Like it.
2. Hate it.
3. Don't care.

iLounge reports on information its has received regarding the next-generation iPhone, claiming that Apple will indeed be making the move to a 4-inch display by increasing the height only has had been previously speculated. To accommodate the taller screen, the body of the device will also become slightly taller, but it will also see an approximately 20% reduction in thickness.Image

The report also claims that Apple will be adopting the rumored smaller dock connector for the device, which will be "closer to a pill shape" than the existing connector.

iLounge has offered some correct information in the past, and was rather accurate in its claims regarding the latest iPad. Not all of the site's claims came to fruition, however, with the new iPad's front-facing camera failing to gain HD resolution and Apple offering no sign of an enhanced smart cover for the device.

Except most people I know actually liked the 3G and 4 design (myself included). This design isn't ugly as much as it is disproportional. And everyone in the design world knows that proportions are everything.

Exactly.... that's why my point was that people started to like it when they see it in person....

I said the iPhone 4 looked ugly when I saw the Gizmodo article. When I saw it in person it was the most beautiful phone I've ever seen.

After that I learned to shut my mouth and trust Ive. This is even worse because it's a mockup.

That's what happens, but most people still don't understand.

Not really... while some people had a preference for iPhone 3GS' curved design, it was hard to deny that the iPhone 4 was a beautiful design. Something like this would much more controversy and disagreement.

Again, same thing as before. It happens every time.

Except for we had actual images of the device when that was going on, right now we have a frankenphone built off the iPhone 4 hacked together in photoshop. Not even an artists rendering. So therefore, it is ugly.

It is an image either way. People hated the iPhone 4 design when they first saw images, now they love it. Same thing is going to happen. It always does without fail.

Then you will end up like one of those people who say "I think the iPhone 4 design is the best design ever and I hope they never change it."
The problem with that is that if you follow that logic, then once you find a design you like, you never change it. Ever. That would mean computers would all still have the awful design and terrible off white color. Thinking that just hurts advances.

i would say if the new iphone gets any type of chassis redesign, it would pull ques from the ipad. thin unibody metal design, with tapered curved edges. my only thinking why the design would stay the same would be cost. apple invested several pennies on the manufacturing machinery for the 4 & 4s. changing designs every 6 months is one of the main reason that the american automotive industry tanked. keeping the same exterior while juicing the guts is a very euro way of thinking, ah-la bmw. plus the amount of "leaked" parts over the last couple revisions have declined, which is a sign of two things. increased control, and improved fabrication techniques. by reusing designs, it cuts down on prototyping and other potential fabrication revamps.

Wow 4 inch screen I was expecting it to be around 4.3inch at least..but it's just a rumor for now..i just cut out a 4 inch paper screen size to see if it will fit on the iPhone 4/S and it will. just move the front cam up and ear speakers bit tight fit but It can.. I'll still keep my iPhone 4 as a back up..not getting the iPhone 5..waiting on GS3 to see what's all the hype all about..GS3/X HTC is my pick for my next phone..time for a change iPhone got stale for me..But still love it..

I think if Ive looked at some of these posts he would say, "Those people posting are what is absurd!" If they follow what they have done so far, the design is changing. Thank goodness - the 4/4S looks good, but it is not as comfortable to hold as the previous versions. I would rather have a more comfortable design than a bigger screen. However, Ive is not going to just make the screen bigger with the same design. That is not art and he could have done that last year. Heck, he could have done that last week!

I have posted that we might see TB inside the center of a 1/8" audio plug, presumably with current USB still enabled.

Another possibility is a micro-USB plug with TB added and some increase in power capacity.

That would be adoptable for cameras, drives, displays, computers, and a wide rang of other accessories. I wonder if it could also have BT4 or another wireless standard in a bump along the cable?

Apple loves all-in-one.

Tony

IMHO, they can change the aspect ratio with little pain for developers as long as they allow 3:2 to remain a standard app size and deal with it gracefully. If you want to keep your app 3:2 and run on an HD screen @ 1280x720, then just design it to run @ 1080x720. 100 black pixels top and bottom (left and right in landscape) - no big deal. On a white iPhone maybe they turn white instead. Or just leave it 960x640 and have a larger unused black surround.

Of course they view it as a threat - the S2 has sold many millions, and, whilst it's by no means beaten the iPhone, it's a very serious competitor.

Well, I am sure that Apple doesn't consider anyone a THREAT per se but yes SS is strong competetion as far as handset sales goes. I guess I really shouldn't speak for Apple, but my point was generally that I fully expected some iPhone related rumour to circulate during this week.

I love Apple products, but even I am very curious to see what SS is offering.

Mind you, I think I am just a gadget junkie, I LOVE NEW THINGS!! Yeah I have a boring life but it keeps me entertained haha!

Is it just me?

I for one think the new design is friggin awesome. Its the BEST of both worlds, a big screen that fits movies and video but you can still hold and operate with only one hand...

I am psyched - haters gonna hate
