Apple's newly announced MacBook Pro will be shipping in February, but there are many unanswered questions about details of the new systems.

MacCentral offers a Q&A reference which addresses many of the issues that have been raised. In summary:

- Slower, single layer, DVD burner. The reason cited is that an ultra-slimline designed optical drive is required for the MacBook 1" thinkness form factor.
- S-Video port is gone, but a $19 adapter will give you S-Video again
- No Modem, No FW 800
- Brighter Screen but 60 less pixels vertically
- No official battery rating yet, but expectations are comparable battery life to previous PowerBooks
- The PowerBook 15" PowerPC is only available while supplies last, so has indeed been replaced by the MacBook Pro
- 12" and 17" PowerPC PowerBooks remain on sale.

Meanwhile, Xlr8YourMac notes that the new Intel Macs do include the following features:

- Boot from external Firewire drive
- Boot into Target Disk Mode
- Use Startup Manager ("opt" startup)
- Support full desktop support across dual monitors (not just mirroring)

Bummer - No firewire, Target disk, etc.
these are good features.
Hopefullly some or all will be brought back in next rev.

EDIT: OK - thanks one and all for pointing out my degree of wrongness. Not the first, certainly not the last.

The article says firewire external boot IS available, target disk mode is also available. So, say yay - not bummer.
 
Small Price to pay

I will happily give up these features to have a slimmer cooler laptop.

If the battery life is the same but the performaces is 4x then ya can't complain too much about that.:D

And this means that we will be able to dual boot into windows. Congratulations everyone! :p

The only thing I think sucks is no DL DVD burner. I never used modem or FW800... ever.

No offence... but FW800 = completely useless.

Who in the hell said anything about being cooler??? If anything it's gonna be hotter. Do you like it HOT? :p

Seriously, I believe they run just as hot as the G4s did.

The bestbuy here (or other stores for that matter) don't even carry DL disks yet. I wonder if they will ever become a norm considering the new formatts being released.

I think its a safe bet to drop DL

Could have made it better. They had the opportunity to completely redesign the form, and they didn't. Would have been a good time to do it too. Oh well.

I'm starting to wonder about this Intel switch.

What would be the point to completely redesign the form? I think the form is basically perfect the way it is/was. The intel switch is the best thing Apple has ever done, and it will be proven to you with speed increases you never thought possible. :cool:

Target disk mode will only work between PPC and intel macs if the PPC mac has 10.4 installed, older versions of OSX do not support the new partitioning method used in the new intel macs.

many will complain .. trust me. they do wtih every revision and upgrade no matter what is included, excluded, inserted, removed, how fast, how powerful. how much of an increase. etc. Some people just live to moan. :eek:

This is good news, but to be sure that XP will run still requires someone to just try it.

Did Apple leave a BIOS legacy module into their EFI so XP can boot natively, or will you have to resort to a thrid party boot loader like GRUB to make it work...

Has anyone actually got their hands on the new iMac yet?

Its a professional's laptop.....as far as looks go.....I'm not sure how it could get too much better (have you looked at dells:( )

If your going to critize the look the maybe you have ideas for additions...
I would love to hear what you have in mind.:cool:
 
The article doesn't say there's no firewire in the MacBook Pro, it says no Firewire800. The first thing I noticed is that the MacBook Pro has "downgraded" I suppose you could say to Firewire400, but indeed it does have Firewire.

Good thing I'm not buying just yet ... think I could use something "REALLY COOL" ... and held up only by limited supplies of CoreDuos. :)

But then ... who know the "anonymous source" really "knows", or if the source even exists. LOL

"Apple cheated us of dual-layer DVD burning!!!" and "impossible to output to TV!!!" were two of the loudest cries this week... Oops--I guess Apple's not so "stupid and greedy" after all ;)

Apple kept the same styling (a great one in my view) to create a reassuring continuity for buyers. This a a BIG change and makes some people nervous. This way it gives people a big speed boost but doesn't feel too "scary."

(I wonder if new styling might come with Merom and Conroe later this year, though.)

VERY WELCOME and easy to overlook: the new iMacs, not just the MacBook, now have full spanning, with the mini-DVI port like the 12" PB (optional adapter to get normal DVI). The new iMacs can run a 23" Cinema Display in addition to the built-in screen. (And MacBook Pro can run the 30".)
