Hopefully they will drop the price on the 15" PowerBook. My wife has been using my 17" PowerBook and I want it back...
Mr Maui said:If I am correct, Firewire 800 is being eliminated because USB2 has comparable speeds (and is backwards compatible with USB 1.1, thus requiring only one port unlike FW400/FW800) and very few companies are manufacturing products with FW800 support, so it makes sense to use the space for something else useful and practical for mobility. FW800 support is still presently in the towers.

Why so excited about new sizes? Maybe they are different sizes: like the 17" being replaced by a 20", and the 12" by either an ultraslim or a 13" widescreen.
If I were forced to guess I'd say he knows about a 20" MacBook that he is personally really excited about. Nothing more than that. But it would still be cool if it happens. (Talk about cookie trays!)

firewire has higher maintained rates of data transfer than usb 2. It is an industry standard on most video cameras. Firewire will be around for a long time to come and eventually, fw 800 will become more accepted. it is still a flegeling technology.
shawnce said:Most users don't use FW800 and for those that do need it you can get an ExpressCard that supports FW800. ExpressCard has pins for a 2.5Gbps PCIe link (single lane) and a USB 2.0 link (480Mbps). FireWire 800 is 800Mbps so ExpressCards have the bandwidth and I believe power connections.

alexhooren said:omg, genious! presumably you can get a expresscard modem aswell (although im sure there are usb ones about). it hasnt really lost any features so to speak, just upgrades are needed to get them.
im pritty sure the next rev. should add and improve on it. for a years work, on a new platform, theyve done an amazing job. how many years have dell been going? and how close have they come to even matching the mbp in design?
Because the mobo has it set up in a different configuration. The Intel version has the vents along the back instead of the sides. Means nothing as far as coolness is conserned. Sure the screen and video card are the most power hungry features on there. The Core Duo is no slouch when it comes to sucking power either.excalibur313 said:If that was true why did they choose to eliminate the cooling vents along the side of the laptop? I think what really sucks the power is that screen and video card.
Randall said:What would be the point to completely redesign the form? I think the form is basically perfect the way it is/was. The intel switch is the best thing Apple has ever done, and it will be proven to you with speed increases you never thought possible.![]()
Personally, I'd wish that they would go back to the G4 configuration for the iMac, because that really was excellent design. The new one looks like somebody slapped a laptop to the back of your LCD. I hate it.nxent said:i wouldn't necessarily say it's the best thing apple's done. we'll see about that in a couple of years. As for the form, it's been the same for the past 5 years. In fact it's the oldest form in their lineup. No doubt, it's the sexiest thing around but eventually styles and designs get old, regardless of how good they are. Original iMac G4, solid, even won design awards, but it got old, so they had to change it with the transition to the G5 (i'm sure the power/heatsink had a healthy hand). But one thing is sure- in the power line up, with powerbooks and powermacs, apple traditionally keeps the form the same with the introductory transition to a new processor, if they can help it(603 to original G3, G3 to original G4). Not really sure why they do it, but after a few months, they'll later they introduce something completely different

Expect this thing to burn your lap. I would recommend getting Xpad4laptop or whatever it's called as a thermal protection and gripper for your lap. You could lose a nut with the heat coming off of that baby. Space heater add-on is just $29.99.![]()

It doesn't really seem to me that it is simply a new size because that would conjure up a response like "ehh well not exactly." I think this suggests something different completely...probably a tablet judging by his reaction.
This really is a marketing decision rather than a technical one. I've had my revA 17" iMac G5 spanning over to my TV for a while now with Screen Spanning Dr.. Believe you-me, divx anime looks AWESOME with VLC on my 32" Sony Wega. Almost as good as digital broadcast.nagromme said:"Apple cheated us of dual-layer DVD burning!!!" and "impossible to output to TV!!!" were two of the loudest cries this week... Oops--I guess Apple's not so "stupid and greedy" after all
Apple kept the same styling (a great one in my view) to create a reassuring continuity for buyers. This a a BIG change and makes some people nervous. This way it gives people a big speed boost but doesn't feel too "scary."
(I wonder if new styling might come with Merom and Conroe later this year, though.)
Interesting. So... let the price plummet
VERY WELCOME and easy to overlook: the new iMacs, not just the MacBook, now have full spanning, with the mini-DVI port like the 12" PB (optional adapter to get normal DVI). The new iMacs can run a 23" Cinema Display in addition to the built-in screen. (And MacBook Pro can run the 30".)
You can't be serious...kwajo.com said:i was really pulling for them to bring back the TiBook, god that thing was a beauty, much better looking than the AluBooks
rosalindavenue said:I wonder if the lesser, single layer DVD writer really is necessary due to the form factor? Even Steve said it was only a "hair" thinner than the 17" G4 powerbook, which had the dual layer drive. Here's my theory: The g4 processor cost apple around $50; the Core Duo costs apple more like $200 (there are plenty of other threads with these prices). Apple's got to cut costs other places, and even then they're not getting the markup they used to get.
Dude, let go of your floppy disks and 56kbps. Wireless internet for mac laptops has been available for a while now. GSM Cellphone->Bluetooth->MacMacFan782040 said:Ok not completely redesign the form, but change it up a bit, it looks too much like the G4. From far away, you wouldn't be able to tell if it's a G4 or Intel one. Also, I think not including the modem was a bad idea. OK maybe for desktops, but not so much for laptops. Yes, a lot of areas have high-speed or wireless, but some remote locations do not. On the road, a good backup would be dialup. Or, using your cell phone to use the modem to dial up. You can't now without an external one...![]()

I think its a safe bet to drop DL

Apple keeps the same form with their laptops because it is really perfect. Find me a sexier/more practicle form factor to prove me wrong. You won't find one. Dells laptops are ug-ly.
Randall said:And this means that we will be able to dual boot into windows. Congratulations everyone!
The only thing I think sucks is no DL DVD burner. I never used modem or FW800... ever.
No offence... but FW800 = completely useless.
