I'm genuinely wondering about most of you guys.

"IF APPLE DOESN'T CHANGE IOS IM DONE IM LEAVING FOR THE GS4!!!!!"
"I HATE THE TEXTURES EVERYWHERE SKEUOMORPHISM SUCKS!!!11"

"Apple is making big changes to iOS as a whole, rather than only minor ones and dropping textures in favor of simplistic black and white backgrounds with splashes of color."

"WTF THAT SOUNDS SO BAD I HATE THAT IT SOUNDS TERRIBLE"

Are you complaining just to complain at this point, or...?

Most if not all of these whiners have no background in design (software or otherwise) and have no idea what they are talking about, AND are basing their disappointment off of RUMORS. It is silly reading these posts.

I hope this is not true.

Flat Design is terrible. Really shows you have no clue about good design and/or how to do things. Anyone can use a Sans Serif font, lots of white space, bold and call it "Fresh", "Modern", and "Flat". In reality it looks terrible. Evidendce: Zune, Windows Phone, Windows 8. Horrible paradigms that leave most comfused and waste real estate. I've not seen 1 Flat Design that looks good!

Panoramic wallpaper is also horrible. Dealt with it on Android. Say you want a pic of your kid, dog, spouse, etc. as your wallpaper. In iOS you see it all the time. In Android you would have 1 screen with the left part, one with the middle, and one with the right. Really horrible, IMHO. Even if you used a pic of, say a scenic it was pretty bad.

I really think Apple needs to drive the design conversation like they did with OS X rather than immitate bad ideas from their competitors.

I've been using black and white photos of my wife and kid as a background for a while and I must say it looks horribly classy.... :D

For me, IOS 7's radical change(if that) is not enough to prevent me from buying bigger screen based droid. I will consider both S4 and NOTE 3.. Hopefully by the time those are ready to be retired, apple has their act together and brings out an awesome phone.. I really hope so.

So like I/O 2013?.....

Google released Play Games like Apple has had for ages (Game Center), Google released reminders and alarms set from Google Now like Apple has had for ages (Siri), Google released more api tools for devs like Apple has had for ages....

This goes both ways. Both implement similar functions in different ways. That's the point of separate platforms.

I don't want more "features" for the sake of features. Give me a more refined iOS with some added conveniences (toggles, great - more refined notification center, awesome).

Default apps.....meh, I'd be fine if they added it but not broken up about it.

You missed my point, Apple are now caving in and adding features that they never thought were needed. Google were never that ignorant. Trust me features like being able to select default apps is important to alot of people. Its one of the main reasons i jumped ship, Me and all of my mates were iPhone users when the iP4 was released. Yesterday the last of us switched to an Android phone, he got the Samsung S4 and he cant believe he waited so long. Slowly but surely Apple are losing their customer base due to the lack of software features.

Best of all, "I've never liked Android but if Apple makes iOS flatter I'm going to Android!!!!"

I hope this is not true.

You haven't even seen how Apple pulls it off?

Panoramic wallpaper is also horrible. Dealt with it on Android. Say you want a pic of your kid, dog, spouse, etc. as your wallpaper. In iOS you see it all the time. You have no details about whether it is mandatory?

once you're using your iOS device, you don't really care if the icons are flat, bubbly, grey or rainbow coloured... you just use the app you've got open

Sod the interface redesign, can we have mass-licensing for iOS apps please without having to download 1500 individual codes from the VPP... oh and the ability to re-image them... thanks, I trust you Jony.

look and feel changes - how about adding some functionality?

This thread was posted under the title "More Details on Jony Ive's Flat iOS 7 Design: Heavier on Black and White"

Why would you come into a thread clearly about design changes thinking there would be details on new functionality from iOS 7?

I already have an issue with music on the iphone. The "Shuffle" icon is either light grey or dark and I can't tell which means shuffle is turned on. If you turn the phone and get into another view the shuffle icon is orange which is obvious it is turned on. I really hope they still use colors to indicate when things are enabled and flat when disabled.

Even tho I've gotten used to them, I never quite thought the skumorphic designs in iOS (like the yellow notepad & leather textures) quite fit Apple. They always seemed a bit off to me.

But they were overshadowed by the great Apple user interface and again, I just got used to them.

I'm all for changing the look of iOS, and think Ives will do a great job. Apple has always been about the hardware & software being seamlessly connected...so making the look of iOS more Apple-like makes total sense. The leather & other skumorphic designs have always seemed out of place. Getting rid of them will help improve the Apple experience IMHO.

We want a change but we don't want a change? Color me interested. iOS is in need of some updating, and I am not going to proclaim it a failure until we see it. I'm sure apple still has some idea of what it's going not to release a complete dud. And I'm sure there will be more new features than new icons, but don't expect tons of freedom to choose default apps unless Tim Cook really wants to show a diversion from the Jobs era.

It's either

Ive's got a good feeling about this.

Or

Jony's got a good feeling about this.

Or

I've got a good feeling about this.

Nine up votes, when I can't even figure out what you mean.

First off, it's a play on words at the sacrifice of grammatical perfection. Second, if you can't even "figure out what mean" then you seriously need to either get a sense of humor or lighten up at the very least.

So something like this with flatter toolbars?

panoramic wallpapers? isnt that a longtime feature in android? i mean that thing where you scroll from left to right and you scroll along the picture?

Black and white sounds good especially when the current iphone 5 design looks like something high class but iOS design looks just like it was drawn by some 10 year old. Yet still, black and white designed buttons already exist in Windows phone so...yeah.

I'm not getting warm fuzzies over this. Microsoft also went "flat" and dropped most color for a black and white look with Visual Studio 2012 and it's not good. I hope it's not as bad as I'm picturing...

I Just Regurgitated My Breakfast

Apple should have bought the Palm OS platform back in 2000. Would have saved them a lot of R&D money. And the panoramic wallpapers that shift as you swipe screens is extremely original. I've never seen that done anywhere before. This guy is going to be fired faster than you can say Failure.

1. All flat design is not the same. Metro UI is flat, but flat is not Metro UI. They are separate. Comparing the two is literally almost exactly like someone claiming a Honda Civic is the same as a Ford F150 simply because they're both black and have black leather interiors. Sure they're both vehicles, but they're still completely different.

2. I agree with you. I don't really care too much for panoramic wallpapers. But you know what's great about them? You'll be able to turn them off. There is absolutely no way apple would FORCE you to use them. Don't prefer panoramic wallpapers? Cool. Turn them off.

I think some people at Apple like Android or use Android devices. I'm sure I read something about them liking the Galaxy 7" which made them go for the Ipad mini?

It's almost as if they are sitting with a Galaxy phone and saying we have to make this more like Android.

And white note pads and plain? Try boring, flat, cold feeling OS, functional and lacking the usual Apple innovation.

I hope Apple are not doing another Microsoft with Surface and releasing a crap device.

Refreshing the look and feel does prevent them from adjusting the features of the OS as well. I don't know why people complain about functionality in a thread focussed on design. It makes no sense.

You really want a black and white design??? Apple are changing their strengths instead of improving the weaknesses. The Apple hardware and OS design is actually really good, its the software's features and lack of screen size options that is Apples weak points.

This place should be called MacWhiners! My word!

We know next to nothing about what this will actually look like, right? All we have now are some snippets of information without context and without detail...

But we also have history to think about. History specifically to do with almost everything Ive has done at Apple. Let's have a quick stroll down Reminiscence Road, shall we?

It was late last summer... the air was balmy and the evenings were long. We sat here, huddled around our laptops and poured over blurry images of what was rumoured to be the new iPhone 5.

Some of us thought it looked awful! Two-tone back! Uurrghh! Some of us said this was the ugliest thing Apple had ever made and if that was what they were going to launch then they were doomed!!!

But others of us preached caution. Don't rush to judgment, we said. Don't form strong, emotional opinions based on incomplete products and rumours. After all, we reasoned, this was a product being designed by Sir Jony Ive! He and his design team had been behind a string of beautiful products. And, we said, think back to the iPhone 4 - early leaks were widely panned but, when it came out, people loved it.

Fast forward to September of that year and the iPhone 5 is revealed. And people saw the sleek edges, the shiny bevel, the smoothness and attention to detail in the fit and finish... and they loved it. Seen in the flesh and finished properly the press and public alike called it gorgeous, jewel like and high-end. Now, eight months later, general consensus is that the iPhone 5 remains one of the most well designed and well built devices in the world of smartphones and beyond. I certainly believe mine is the nicest thing I've ever owned.

Now, here we are again, hearing snippets and rumours of unfinished stuff coming from the designer who brought us the iPhone 4 and 5, the iPod, the Macbook Air, the iPad mini, the iMac... a man who we know is among the finest designers in the world and who has a team of astonishingly talented people working around him... and remembering how wrong we've been before when we rushed to pass judgement on unfinished goods, might we not take a step back and, for a moment, give him the benefit of the doubt? After all, how often has Ive let us down? Surely his hit rate is pretty damn good?

I, for one, trust the guy. And the snippets above sound reasonable enough. Having more black and white with accent colours is fine from a design standpoint - we will have to see how this is done before we know if it works, of course. But this is Jony Ive we're talking about here. Jony-effing-Ive!

Looks like you're the one that needs to get a sense of humor and lighten up... ;)
