What if

3x3 touchscreen in place and nano stays widescreen. Yes. Maybe..

I thought the whole point of the shuffle was that you didn't have to look at it, which makes it a great player for jogging and other sport activities. If you want the screen, you go with the Nano. When you're out and about you just want to do things quickly, I remember having my iPod Classic 100% full of music, and it was a nightmare finding what i wanted to play, added 10 minutes to my journey. I now use playlists and my Nano, although my girl friend's Shuffle is really quick an easy to use, probably even better for short journeys!

I think it's going to be slightly bigger than some people are interpreting that screen to be. It'll have to be big enough to comfortably watch video.

you won't be able to watch propper videos on this screen. if you want video, they'll let you buy an ipod touch. the display is going to be quite small as it will replace the shuffle. even the user interface will be different to the old nano. it will be based on square cd covers.

It's interesting. If it has bluetooth and/or wifi it'd be a perfect size to act as a remote for Apple TV, as other rumours have suggested.

apple already has the remote - it is the new aluminum remote. it doesn't make any sense to have a display and touchscreen on a remote control as remote controls should be able to be operated without looking at them.

i can imagine that they add a gyroscope sensor in the apple remote, but the nano is not going to be a remote. it will also NOT have bluetooth. it is entry-level market.

I wonder if we'll be able to target it with the iOS SDK? I can think of a few uses for a small programmable device like that, for controlling interactive displays and so on.

makes no sense at all. the display is way too small and the processor and battery way to weak. the nano is going to be as simple as possible. and apple will also try to make it as cheap as possible too (no bluetooth, no camera, no wifi, no loudspeaker, no buttons!). it will mainly be controlled via the remotecontrol on the headphones (like the shuffle that will be removed).

Going of the picture above, if that is a Nano, then tbh I don't think I like it?

Maybe on release it might look better, but going of that I don't at all :(

We shall see soon!

LOL! I love these posts. Thats what people said about the iPhone 4 when it was lost. "Oh Im defo not buying that, looks ugly blah blah blah" 4+million units later and all those who whinged about the design have bought because its simply the best looking Phone on the market. So dont give that. You'll buy it, simple as.

Whilst you can watch videos on the nano. It aint the greatest experence tbh. Heck its not really that great on the iPhone / iPod touch.

Video content is only really that good on the iPad and screens bigger than that. Its a mere novelty.

I prefer the look of this new nano. Its gonna be even more compact for what perople really want the Nano for - Music. End off.

This couldnt be more true. iPhone4 sales prove it

cool mockup! but as you can see, the nano now makes no sense at all. it is like the touch, but the touch is way better.

imagine your nano like you have on the left top, that is going to be the nano. but there won't be a click wheel simulation. instead you'll see the cd cover and can operate on it. to go to the next song swipe it to the right. you'll also have the song list window (like on your mockup) and a list view to select genres, title or artist. maybe they will even scrap that and base everything on the icons they already use in itunes for the genres. you'll then have 3x3 icons with the genres and scroll up and down.

They look awesome. lets hope they look like this. The whole line up looks integrated and Apple esque.

This is so great. I really hope the iPod touch is an iPhone without a phone chip (and antenna) and with a larger storage capacity. I'd buy one of those beauties in an instant.

I'd especially like one for a hike I'm going on next month. Come on GPS radio :D.

Mobile phone?

My guess is they're giving the nano basic mobile telephony functionality. That would make sense to iPad owners who now have less use for an iPhone. So customers could either go for an iPad + nano combo, or for an iPhone.

If this uses those awful shuffle headphones then it will be unusable for people like me who have ears that they don't stay in while running. I'll keep my old square nano.

I think several things will happen:

2) iPod Shuffle
- discontinued

4) iPod Nano
- replaced with new product line.

You might be right, but I think it would be stupid to eliminate the Shuffle. The shuffle is a low-end intro device that Apple should continue moving down in price. That 2G version was the best, and for $29 for 2 GB would get the kiddies into iTunes and the Apple software workings. Thus they would feel comfortable to move up the product line with money and time, going to the "new" nano (we assume) for around $99 and then the app-movies-browsing devices.

Plus, the tiny shuffle is such a useful device. I hope it hangs around for a good while.

Everyone is guessing, but we'll see where Apple goes with their product line on Sept. 1st.

For X amount of people who got the iPhone, there are X+Y amount of people who got Android phones. Android phones' sales showed that. Then there are Z amount of people who don't give a damn about smartphones because their old phone still does what they want and they don't see a need to get a new phone.

So no, I didn't get the iPhone, will not be getting the iPhone, because I'm going with my old phone with the new touch setup. I like my phone and toy mutually exclusive.

ok, here is my tought and I'm curious how exact my "nostradamus" prediction was when we hear what apple is going to show on 1st of september:

- first: apple is going to scrap the ipod classic! it doesn't make any sense anymore, apple can not sell apps with it and if they double the touch's ram to 128 GB the ipod touch is a good (but expensive) replacement.

- from now on, the ipod touch is going to be the main ipod. it will get a fresh new design and will have 16, 64 and 128 GB of ram and will cost 199 / 299 and 399 US$. it will get a camera and a higher resolution retina display and a gyroscope sensor.

RAM ??? You mean hard disk ?

Maybe Apple will actually be successful surprising us for once, I really dont see that being a nano or a shuffle, a touch screen that small seems cumbersome.

... a touch screen that small seems cumbersome.

This is always the first though of most people. However, can you think of ONE thing Apple released since 1998 that had a horrid user interface? If Apple is releasing it, it WILL work nicely. Apple's big problems tend to come later (batteries going odd, sweat killing headphone controls, etc.)

Whatever this thing is, it will probably be seductively awesome at first use.

Android surpassed iOS at the end of the 3GS lifecycle. Iphone 4 was then released and once again dominated worldwide!

- first: apple is going to scrap the ipod classic! it doesn't make any sense anymore, apple can not sell apps with it and if they double the touch's ram to 128 GB the ipod touch is a good (but expensive) replacement.

- many people will be sad about this, but the ipod classic will re-appear as a limited "10 years ipod" edition in october 2012. to remove the classic from the product line makes this "limited edition" classic even more interesting in 2 years. a clever move!

- from now on, the ipod touch is going to be the main ipod. it will get a fresh new design and will have 16, 64 and 128 GB of ram and will cost 199 / 299 and 399 US$. it will get a camera and a higher resolution retina display and a gyroscope sensor.

- the target market will be music, games and the video filmers that used the nano to film. to different the ipod touch from the iphone it will NOT have a frontfacing camera and therefore NO facetime. it will also have a weaker camera compared to the iphone (3mp) but be a bit thinner.

- big changes to the nano: it is going to loose the camera and the clickwheel but will come in a very fresh and small square-formfactor. the device will be controlled via a squared multitouch display and a new user interface that will be based on cd covers but also lists like on the old nano. it will be shipped with the remote control headphones like the shuffle with volume and middle click button to skip, forward and start/stop the music. you will also be able to use the nano without looking at the display in a way like the ipod shuffle with voice output.

- a 4 GB nano will be sold at 99 US$, the 8 GB at 139 and the 16 GB one at 179 us$. to save money, apple might remove the dock connector and the dock. instead the nano will be powered with a tiny cable that is plugged into the audio-connector. there will also be a little clip on the backside to clip the nano onto a shirt. the nano will come in black and white as well as red, pink, blue, yellow and green.

- as the nano is so small now and agressively priced, they might scrap the ipod shuffle completely. remember: the nano can now be used like a shuffle and when the nano is in your pocket, it will behave similar like a shuffle, it will have the same remote control and the same voice output.

to clear up the product line has many advantages for apple. the removal of the ipod classic means the end of harddisks and its moving parts in the ipods. it also forces the people to buy an ipod touch which will broaden the customer base for the app store and apps mean money. the faster chip and the higher resolution will seduce old touch users to upgrade to the new touch and developers can focus on one resolution rather than two (actually 3 if you also count the ipad). apple is also playing the "want more...?" game with 16 GB ram for the entry touch but 64 for "only" 100 us$ more or another 100 us$ if you want to have the same space like in the old classic ipod.

even removing the shuffle has some advantages for apple: 99 us$ is a very seductive price for "ipod beginners", but still more than the 59 us$ they charged for the old shuffle. they will get 40 us$ more per beginner that would have bought a shuffle and is now forced to buy the tiny nano.

Hopefully you are wrong with many of your "toughts".

Hm...

I guess I get the presumed new nano now:

- to heck with the video & camera: it's meant to be the best music player
- it needs to be as small as possible while still giving the user a useful UI
- thus an entire side consists of a touch screen that can (1) display lists of songs, albums, etc. to scroll through, (2) show cover art, etc.

Put it this way:

The device is 99% about music and other audio. It's not Apple that makes it that way, it's nano users. Does it really make sense to double its size and weight and increase the complexity of its UI to support video and camera features?

Touch screen?

I still say that doesn't look like a touchscreen, you rarely see those horizontal lines in modern LCD/LED screens. You do see them in modern solar cells!
I remember seeing something on here a year and a half ago about how apple filed a patent to have iPods that were dual powered by traditional ac power and a solar cell on the back.
