My Verizon service averages about 15 - 18 Mbps-the AT&T service was 3-6 Mbps and I dropped a call twice

That's a pretty crazy drop in speed. Fortunately, where I live Verizon and AT&T coverage and data speeds are very similar. AT&T even beats out Verizon data speeds at my families vacation spot on the Oregon coast. It was a pretty easy decision for my wife to make when AT&T announced their new shared data value plans.

Yep thats a no brainer to me too

How fast is the Verizon in your area?

Verizon just started switching on additional LTE (using AWS) where I live (Virginia's largest metro area). Here's what I get. AT&T's old 4G network here is that fast. Their LTE network here is 10-15Mbps.

I only went with Verizon because their phones are unlocked and I travel internationally for work and need that. But now that I can buy my ATT phone full price (which comes unlocked) and get a $25/month discount, I'm not stuck with Verizon (thankfully)!

Is that the speed you are getting using the AWS bands?

The Field Test screen showed Band 4, which should be AWS.

I just ported to ATT. Here's a speed test from the same location, using the same phone.

Verizon added almost 3 times as many customers as AT&T did last year. If AT&T can start affecting their numbers, that's when they might respond. In the meantime AT&T and T-Mobile need to keep working on their networks and catch up before Verizon really has very much to worry about.

If you look at the forum it seems Verizon is being affected however that's just a very small amount of the wireless customers

I love Verizon's coverage and services - until AT&T can deliver that IN MY AREA - I will be paying a premium price - I hope in the next year AT&T improves because I would love to have an option.

Close, but no cigar.

AT&T Mobile Share Value Plans are a $15 discount per line ($10 on Verizon) for up to 8GB if you do their monthly installments. $25 discount per line for 10GB and up ($20 on Verizon). And the base price for 10GB is $100 on both sides. AT&T still comes out on top here.

But I've been an AT&T customer for 7+ years and have never been anywhere else so I won't comment on quality of service. AT&T is phenomenal here in Florida.

It seems the industry will be getting away from contracts like T-Mobile did and offering full price phones but discounted on the plans, I just switched to AT&T 10GB Family Plan and went from$240 to $160 and soon I will be down to $110 for my IP5 and 10GB Data once the other two lines come off my plan.

There was an article from AT&T CEO that they can not afford to sub the phones anymore.

To me this means people will just keep their devices longer since they will cost more up front or have to finance them. This somehow has to chew into all Carriers bottom lines, and will do the same for Apple. I would not be surprised if we see Apple become a wireless carrier?

But verizon edge plans don't give discounts for fully paid off phones or bring your own phones.

Verizon is taking a calculated risk with this. Usually ATT and verizon go hand in hand. Verizon believes their network reputation will prevent higher churn rates.

Time will tell.

With my 25% company discount, dropping the vzw insurance from both lines and dropping road side assistance we're going to save about 40 bucks/month. Also dropped down from 4GB shared to 3GB because there's a promotion that gives you 1GB/month free so I pay less for the 3GB plan and still get that extra 1GB for a year. Did all this last night!!

Each of my kids got multiple free iPhone out of warranty replacements from verizon due to the insurance. Even when the cause of the replacement is let's say self inflicted. The insurance is worth it's weight in gold, IMO.

I'm not rough on phones so it was more beneficial to me to remove it from our account!

My kids aren't either:
- the home button stopped working
- volume control stopped working
- earphone jack stopped working
- screen became unresponsive, etc
- ear piece speaker was crackling
- microphone stopped working

Guess I should also say I've still got until 11/3/14 with my 1 year of Apple warranty!

I thought Verizon's insurance on iPhones was pretty rough (in terms of deductibles)?

iPhone® and Other Devices

  • $9.99/month per covered device
  • $99 non-refundable deductible (iPhone 4 8GB)
  • $169 non-refundable deductible (iPhone 4 16GB, iPhone 4S 16GB, iPhone 5 8GB and iPhone 5 16GB) per approved claim for devices lost, stolen, or damaged
  • $199 non-refundable deductible (iPhone 4 32GB, iPhone 4S 32GB, iPhone 4S 64GB, iPhone 5 32GB and iPhone 5 64GB) per approved claim for devices lost, stolen, or damaged
  • Two replacements in a 12-month period with an equipment maximum of $1500 per claim (in New York, two claims per policy year)/quote]

What promotion is that?

It will be VERY interesting to see what the landscape looks like in 3 to 5 years - what the plans between the carriers look like, what impact T-Mo has had on the industry (although probably gobbled up by someone by then) and so on. I hope that competition drives prices down.

Well, well, AT&T responds fairly quickly to match one of the things that Verizon added that AT&T didn't. On the other hand Verizon misses a huge thing of not allowing discounts on phones that are paid off, unlike AT&T that introduced that. We can only hope Verizon wakes up and adds that, but somehow they seem to suddenly think they don't have to match their close competitors all that well anymore.
