Ahem. I am guessing you wouldn’t care for any outside perspective on that.
By the way, if you thought it was “devious” of them to remove the headphone jack, just wait until you hear what people have to do to play DVDs on new Macs.... The horror! The arrogance!
Ha. Have not used a DVD or CD in ages. I uploaded my CD library to iTunes and now my Plex server 2 years ago. I either rent or buy my movies via one of the many services. Like I said... I'm not that far behind the times. I don't look at unilaterally removing features as progress.
For example, take your reference to DVD's. Over time companies have moved from including DVD's with their products, to offering the software online. It was a gradual transition. For many years computer manufactures continued to include a DVD drive in their product but nowadays it is no longer necessary. I can't think of one medium that still requires or necessitates a DVD or CD to operate.
The difference I see is there are still too many users who still use or want a headphone jack. I have several pairs of wired headphones, some costing hundreds. They still sell them, people buy them, and many manufactures include a jack in their product so we can use them. My car is fours years old and has a headphone jack. I am sure my next car will offer bluetooth, but that's not really the point.
The point is, there has been no gradual transition from wired to wireless. Apple decided it was time and took the jack away. Coincidentally they also offered wireless headphones at about the same time. Devious or marketing genius... Who knows.
I personally despise dongles. It's a placebo to force a transition to Apple's preferred method. Why does Apple still include a headphone jack in the iPod if getting rid of it is such a stroke of genius?
The part that makes it so inconvenient is that if I don't like it, it's not as easy as just moving from one device to another device or platform. Since most of my products are Apple, that puts me inside the "eco-system". So it's not as simple as just finding a phone with a headphone jack.
