Everything I've read says that Google Wallet uses regular EMV messages.

For one example, this guy explored the MIFARE EMV applet it uses and verified the EMV protocol.

Thanks. Very interesting article, and I stand corrected about Google Wallet and EMV.

It sounds like EMV is implemented in Google Wallet by emulating a prepaid Mastercard, which is the same way that other mobile-phone based contactless payment apps (like EE's 'Cash on tap' in the UK) work.

However, as you mentioned, Google Wallet apparantely allows you to authenticate with the app to authorise transactions larger than the typical (£20/CAD $50/etc) transaction limits of EMV contactless terminals.

I'm not sure what mechanism Google uses for this, but everything I've read suggests it is not currently be possible to do this with standard EMV terminals - there's no way for the terminals to tell the difference between a real card and an emulated card (secure app with authentication) so the transaction limit is applied to everyone.
