I have filed for trademarks myself and based on the posted article I think I can offer an explanation:

When you file for a TM, but have not yet "used it in commerce" the TM is classified as "intention of use". Until the status of the TM becomes "used in commerce", meaning it is being sold, the TM cannot actually be granted. So, it appears Apple's desire to extend the time to oppose Fujitsu's move to revive the TM (which in itself would indicate it has not actual produced a product for sale) is due to the fact that, if Apple does produce an "iPad" device "used in commerce", its claim for the TM would supersede Fujitsu's attempt to revive its expired "intention to use" (my assumption) TM status. Sorry for the *very* long sentence.

Thank you for your clear insight! Certainly clears up the issue. Kudos!

iPad does not sound good, however 9 years ago an iPod sounded like some weird toilet. MacPad would also be horrible since it sounds like Maxi Pad. They should just call it Apple Slice.

If this thing is amazing, you'll love it, even if it is called iFeces.
Hell, most of you already own something called Wii...
And it's a stick you hold in your hand and jerk around, to boot.

FWIW, Apple has the precedent of "MessagePad".

... which also raises the irony of Steve Jobs having killed the Newton upon his return, only to recreate it as what could be his final masterpiece.

I imagine there's a few places in the world where someone's accent is going to make requesting an "iPad" confusing to the sales person. I'd eat my own shoe if it's called an iPad.

Last I checked, Apple was no longer using "iBook". My guess would be that they simply re-cycle that. All this other hoopla about iSlate, iPad, etc. is just for them to control the naming rights for the product segment to prevent knockoffs playing off the name.

I think iPad is a great name. Those who want makes jokes will joke. Screw 'em, Apple!

:apple:Pad would also be a great name and an excellent way to market the device.

Why do people think it's going to be either iPad or iSlate.

Can't it be both? I'm thinking that the device will be called the iSlate, but perhaps some software or app inside the device's OS will be called the iPad.

Exactly. It might be a word processing app for example.

Not every iThing is a device:
iTunes
iWork
iLife

I still prefer:

Apple Canvas...
Canvas for short.
iCanvas is even better.

:apple:Canvas
iCanvas

Although it really depends on the functionality of the device. If it's more for book/magazine reading, it's not much of a "Canvas" - if it's easy to create content, draw, etc...Canvas works.

I like iPad only if it's in a legal-pad type of form factor. Leather binder sold separately of course.

iPad might be an interesting name for the device...Whether they call it, it will do very well and will redefine culture. In 2001 the name iPod seemed silly.

I don't even want to know what an "iPed" would be...

Maybe one of these?

Hey, next week, when we all find out what it's gonna be called, we'll see which one of you guys is right. Although, iPad or iSlate have the majority - so I don't think any ONE of us can claim it. However, we have seen some great originals. A lot of us really like CANVAS. That was suggested a few days ago but I don't recall by who(m?).

Who ever wins gets a DOLLAR!

I really don't care...

...what it's called, so long as it is new, creative, useful, and well...cool.

Apple has a good track record. For them to invite people to see "Their new creation", they must be proud and confident of it.

Bring it on, and let us enjoy it.
