I don't think so. It's a good idea to trademark names of products that might be used in the future. Apple likes to hold its iNames. iPad doesn't sound too good, plus its too close to iPod. Gonna be some confusion I think.

One more thing...

If it's not gonna be called 'John', then its name is going to be...

iSpy!

i think the drag and drop concept will work great for them.... i pod has achieved a new hallmark... hatss off to these guys..

That's a lot of money to spend on lawyers just for an iPad...

here's a name you can have for free: iFlap

Newton ipad

So everyone gets a shot at speculating...why not the new Newton iPad?
I believe it will be a two part name "blank" iPad. It will not be iPad on it's own. At least I hope not!

It sounds to me like Apple are hoovering up names so that the competition only have really dorky ones to choose from, when they introduce their offerings.

I have to say islate has grown on me as the name of choice, considering also people are calling these tablets slates now.....look what happened with the ipod.

Seems pretty obvious to me that Apple wants this to lock up in the vault. Nothing more than that. I think the era of "i" is over. It's tired, Apple knows it, and will come up with a fresher name.

I agree. Here's my poke at it: Does the iPad come with wings?

I honestly don't understand all the negativity towards iPad. When someone says "come over to my pad", or "hand me that pad of paper", or "we've ordered the concrete and we'll be pouring the pad tomorrow", I can honesty say I NEVER think of feminine hygiene products. You're either all 12 years old (or 25 with the maturity of a 12 year old) or really, REALLY over thinking things.

If you get it with as much memory you can, will it be a MaxiPad? Wait, I've heard of that before...

I'm beginning to believe that there's actually two different devices here.....

Maybe iSlate is the tablet and iPad is for some sort of multi-touch pad keyboard thing for their desktop line.

Maybe a little far-fetched, but you never know!

I don't think its far-fetched AT ALL. Frankly, the desktop line NEEDS a trackpad equivalent. I think they might release a new keyboard with the trackpad on the right side, calling it the iPad...ala Multi-Touch Track*pad*

The ONLY problem I have with that is...what about the lefties? I guess they could make it usb attachment to either side of the keyboard, making it universal for lefties and righties.

Thoughts?

We'll probably get used to the name. I guess it's good branding since it sounds like 'iPod'. BUT, does this mean that it will be more similar to the iPhone/iPod touch than a Macintosh?

branding

why is everyone's getting all hyped on childish names like the picaso, icanvas, ipad. how about the implimentation of the 'air' brand or just staying focused on their core brands. the elegant and edgy mac marketing (with the exception of this atrocious paint splat invite) needs to be expanded on not regressed on.

it is, more my wish then presumption, that their branding diverges in these tangents

air - ultraportable, sleek, streamlined uses
think: airpod + airpod touch(still sounds like ipod) mac airphone

mac - meat and potatoes demographic
think: macpod (replaces ipod classic) macbook, mac (replaces imac)

pro - industry lapping leader
macPhone Pro aluminum unibody (every fan boys dream)
macBook Pro ( every fan boys dream available in colorware options... because pros deserve it)
macPro (because you'd rather buy a computer than a car)

and hell can we get some design consistancy. mercurys like mercurys; fords like fords; lincolns like lincoln

No way is it iPad.

1) Too confusing with iPod
2) a horrible name unless its a feminine hygiene product.

Just give it up...

These MaxiPad comments are so ridiculous. STOP. JUST STOP. Firstly, remember when the Nintendo Wii was announced and everyone was like, 'As in WEE?!' *giggle, giggle*. And now, despite its name, no one can get enough of the Wii, it seems. If the tablet truly is called the iPad, all of you likening it to a sanitary napkin will still go out and buy one, just like the hardcore Nintendo fan who complained about the 'Wii'. Secondly, not every country in the world has the brand 'MaxiPad', so not every human being will necessarily make the connection between an American branded feminine product and Apple's latest creation. So, give it up. Please.

How about iPad as the software suite that comes on the Slate??

You know... the legal pad replacement... the sketch pad replacement.... the notepad replacement....

The "iLife" for the on the go tablet.

Extensions are not indicative

As a trademark lawyer practiced in both applications and opposition proceedings, I can say definitively that it is not unusual to file all available extensions of time in which to oppose before doing so. The extensions are available precisely so that the parties can negotiate a settlement before a proceeding is commenced. The only notable aspect is that the last extension available, of 60 days, is available only with the consent of the applicant. So 1) Apple will not be able to obtain another extension after the present one, and 2) it would not have been able to obtain this one without Toshiba's consent.

2) it would not have been able to obtain this one without Toshiba's consent.

Fujitsu. I'm glad to see your lawyer powers of observation are still so finely tuned. =) (I'm just taking the piss - no real offence)

It will be called Newton . .

I bloody hope so. But that's just the nostalgic side of me coming out. It might not be wise to name it after a failed product from the 90s, and Jobs would never name something after one of Scully's pet projects.

I imagine there's a few places in the world where someone's accent is going to make requesting an "iPad" confusing to the sales person. I'd eat my own shoe if it's called an iPad.

Haha, kinda hoping its gonna be called iPad now! Would be entertaining to see that :)
