I have mentioned previously that iSlate would be the name, but it looks more and more evidence is pointing towards iPad being the name.

Duh

If Apple filed their opposition, then its obvious theyre interested in the name. This way it keeps us guessing as to what the real name.

Also, the same people making fun of the iPad name made fun of the Wii, and now the name is a name brand sans jokes. So iPad it is, get used to it.

names for it

I'm still pushing for iTab or MacTab.

MacTab = device running full version of OSX
iTab = device running a slimmed down OSX...like the iPhone OS

Though, as I've said in the other thread, iPad sounds better than iSlate.

Why not MacPad and iPad instead of Tabs !!

I just had another thought.... along the lines of my earlier thinking (hoping) that it might be related to the software side.

iMac - that was "Internet Mac" right? So the "i" could in this case mean "interactive pad".

I don't like it as the primary name - i prefer Slate, but i have to keep pondering it until Wednesday like the rest of you! LOL!!

I think iSlate sounds a bit nice...regardless I'm far more interested in what it will do versus what it will be called.

I'm really hoping its more Mac like then iPhone like

I imagine there's a few places in the world where someone's accent is going to make requesting an "iPad" confusing to the sales person. I'd eat my own shoe if it's called an iPad.

Are you willing to eat your own shoe? If you stick by your word I'll make a wager here before everyone on the forums, that I'll cook and eat my own shoe, if it isn't called iPad. I'm 100% sure it's called iPad.

Please, please take the wager…

It is going to be called the iSlate. Everyone that hates that name might as well learn to get over it now, because that is what it will be called!

I'm beginning to believe that there's actually two different devices here.....

Maybe iSlate is the tablet and iPad is for some sort of multi-touch pad keyboard thing for their desktop line.

Maybe a little far-fetched, but you never know!

I like this idea... iPad may bring to mind the wrong image, but it's way better than "Magic Slate" or any combination thereof.

FWIW, Apple has the precedent of "MessagePad".

... which also raises the irony of Steve Jobs having killed the Newton upon his return, only to recreate it as what could be his final masterpiece.

Personally, I'd love to see it named "Newton". I think the whole "i" thing is past its sell by date.

It will be called iSlate. It has a nice ring to it.

The iPad will be used for another device. Someone else suggested a wireless charging 'mat' or 'pad'. Possible.

The 'i' isn't dead yet.

if ituoch wasnt tooken i think that would be good. ipad doesnt seem. bad. now just bring on the att subsidized pricing

I'm guessing you meant iTouch. It's not"tooken"since there is no such product with that name.

I have filed for trademarks myself and based on the posted article I think I can offer an explanation:

When you file for a TM, but have not yet "used it in commerce" the TM is classified as "intention of use". Until the status of the TM becomes "used in commerce", meaning it is being sold, the TM cannot actually be granted. So, it appears Apple's desire to extend the time to oppose Fujitsu's move to revive the TM (which in itself would indicate it has not actual produced a product for sale) is due to the fact that, if Apple does produce an "iPad" device "used in commerce", its claim for the TM would supersede Fujitsu's attempt to revive its expired "intention to use" (my assumption) TM status. Sorry for the *very* long sentence.

In other words....... use it or loose it. ;-)

That is another reason why doesn't make tons of sense for Apple to chase after a name they really don't have an intention to use long term. You can squat on names and perhaps get paid some "you can buy me off to go away" money but with a well lawyered and funded competitor they are just going to walk over you.

If they wanted to squat on it because "it is too similar" that's not going to be extremely effective defense. It would be an additional annoyance layer though.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but do you think it's possible these names are being registered to ensure noone buys the knockoffs that will inevitably follow?

why is everyone's getting all hyped on childish names like the picaso, icanvas, ipad. how about the implimentation of the 'air' brand or just staying focused on their core brands. the elegant and edgy mac marketing (with the exception of this atrocious paint splat invite) needs to be expanded on not regressed on.

it is, more my wish then presumption, that their branding diverges in these tangents

air - ultraportable, sleek, streamlined uses
think: airpod + airpod touch(still sounds like ipod) mac airphone

mac - meat and potatoes demographic
think: macpod (replaces ipod classic) macbook, mac (replaces imac)

pro - industry lapping leader
macPhone Pro aluminum unibody (every fan boys dream)
macBook Pro ( every fan boys dream available in colorware options... because pros deserve it)
macPro (because you'd rather buy a computer than a car)

and hell can we get some design consistancy. mercurys like mercurys; fords like fords; lincolns like lincoln

All of the above is just simply atrocious.
