Going after BlackBerry's best seller?
This is just a guess, but I think they might be going after the BlackBerry Curve's form factor. By reducing the height of the iPhone by one icon and keeping the same width, you pretty much have the same size as the soon to be released Curve 8900.
If they keep the same pixel density, I believe the same apps for the iPhone will work on the rumored iPhone Nano. Also, by keeping the same width, the virtual keyboard will be the same as the current iPhone.
I owned the BlackBerry Curve and they are the most popular phone RIM sells with a full QWERTY keyboard.
