I am starting to get a bit annoyed by all the people yelling, "iPhone5 better have a much better notification system." Yeah, well it has little to do with the hardware and more to do with the software; and yeah, iOS5 better have a better notification system. Guess what, I bet it will work just fine on the iPhone4 as well!

Sorry had to say it. I'm with you though, I'm much more interested in iOS5 then I am iPhone5.

Yes, you are right, it's definitely just a software issue, and I bet it would even work on 3gs if it was something like this http://vimeo.com/21208357 ;)

Once Apple starts integrating that CPU and GPU to iOS 5, then the iPhone 4 will start to lag. Whether Apple will do that or not is up for speculation, but it happened with the iPhone 3G so we'll see.

As long as the iOS 5 exclusions for the iPhone 4 are due to hardware rather than not being the newest model, I could accept missing a few features.

I don't want a repeat of the iPhone 3Gs not getting the new (albeit, crappy) SMS tones on iOS 4 - not because it couldn't handle them, but because it wasn't the latest model of iPhone.

I'm willing to bet the new iPhone is called the 4s not the 5.

I'm also willing to bet that it won't be until the iPhone 5 (2012) that we'll see LTE/4G support.

Even for people upgrading, IMO iOS 5 is more interesting.

Agreed. I think the features/upgrades to the iPhone 5 will be minimal. I look forward every year for apple to introduce something I can't live without in an iOS upgrade. :)

There'd be no reason to call the 2012 model the iPhone 5. It'll be the sixth model. ;)

I also doubt they'd just slap an "S" on the model name like they did last time. Too unoriginal.

Looks pretty good. and definitely has an iOS feel to it. I think I would still prefer some gesture or something else to access notifications, but an app would work sufficiently and definitely feels apple-like.

My only concern is this doesn't address how notifications come in. The notification issue is more than a centralized notification location, it's about unobtrusively showing us without stopping our workflow.

edit: my mistake. After watching the video I saw it does address this. I must have skimmed over that in my reading. oops! Yeah, I really like the concept overall :) Apple should implement something like this

I think also the multitasking bar is under-utilized. Instead of being one bar of apps it could open up to 3 bars. One of apps, one of your most recent notification, and one for with the lockscreen/music settings that are usually to the left. There could be other ways of doing it, but something to that effect.

well, in the video demo it actually showed the notification coming in from the bottom up, staying a bit then moving to the notification icon. I also wouldn't mind the need for a centralized location. I have folders with apps on different pages and i don't always see the notification come in or see the bubble. I hate the pop up alerts but the bottom up alert is good, ie WebOS style. I think ti rounds out the springboard nicely and looks very Apple-ish.

I wonder if Apple scours the interwebs looking for ideas for iOS5 :p

I would really hate it if Apple came up with a poorer idea than the one stated above. I've definitiely seen some good ones, so I hope Apple doesn't disappoint!

Maybe that guy should sell his idea to Apple. Do you think it could make it to iOS5 in time?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

I want the new iPhone 5. iOS5 will be another update in which I am unable to see the changes that were made. I passed on the iPhone 4 because of all the issues it had at launch. I've been sick of my 3GS for about a year and I have resisted going the Android route. I'm hoping the new iPhone is a step or 3 above the iPhone 4.

IMHO option one:
I don't think "iOS5" is going to knock anyone's socks off.

iOS 5 has to have at least one major feature that previous iOSs didnt have - likely it will be a better notification system, which people have been clamoring for for years. Yes, I know that this is doable by jailbreaking, but jailbreak apps, for me at least, always seem at least a bit iffy and lack the polish and added features that official apple features always seem to have. Multitasking , for example. Yes, you could multitask with a jailbroken 3GS, but there was no convenient little multitasking bar, and no really good way to tell what was running in the background except those annoying little badges. Jailbreaking can do these things - but when apple finally gets around to doing them, they always do it better. Also - a lot of the average consumer do not know how to or are unwilling to jailbreak, so giving them the a new notifications system right out of the box will be a major feature, and one less thing the android fanboys can bitch about.

How much are you willing to bet?

From the latest rumors looks like we'll be getting the iPhone 5 first, but i'm loving the idea of a complete revamp of the OS.

If the iPhone 5 has a metal back and a larger screen I may be tempted to sell my 3GS. Not really excited for iOS 5 otherwise as I will be getting a crappy watered down version. Thats the main thing I like about android: even the G1 gets the latest updates through the XDA community.

I have android and I havent been able to get an update for like 6+ months...and I've only had it a year. So I'll be on android 2.1 for the next year when everyone else is is android 3.x or 4.x

I'm way more excited for iOS 5... I have an iPad 2 but no iPhone so the relase of the iPhone will only make me jealous.. I just hope iOS 5 won't be delayed till September like they say the iPhone 5 has been.

However... If they release iPhone 5 with sprint..now that's another story :) lll definitely be excited about that

I am equally excited for both, this is what I am hoping to happen:

iPhone 4S or 5:
  • Apple A5 Chip (obviously going to happen)
  • 8MP Camera with 1080p video recording
  • Thunderbolt Compatibility (highly likely)

iOS5:

Way more excited for iOS 5, maybe that's because I have an iP4 but I really hope that they change a fair amount of the iOS and make the phone more accessible like it is when jailbreaking.

Yup for sure! While iOS is still clearly the most useable and efficient mobile phone OS, it is getting tired. I am eager for a new look and feel, with expose type multitasking a top notch built in navigation and vastly improved stock apps. I also want it to have more home screen customisation instead of the current pages of icons. I believe all this and more will be delivered when it gets announced. Pretty damn excited!

I'm the same. I am very much so considering going back to an iPhone 4 and ditching my Inspire, I am more interested how the software will transform rather than the phone itself. I like the design of the iP4 just fine.
