What type of random question is this?

Of course for anyone that isn't upgrading then the iPhone 5 isn't that big of a deal...

What is there to discuss?

Good point but its not like this is the only waste thread on here. Yeah I am not getting the 5 most likely. Unless there is an accident or something. My line is a secondary line so I probably wont get an early offer and I am feeling a bit under the economy. So yeah iOS bring it on.

Anybody else with me?

I know pretty much what iPhone 5 is going to be, however more than iPhone 5 I'm interested in iOS 5. Very interested in it.

So the real big event for me is in April, and then June is a nice dessert! :D

You must be stuck in an iPhone 4 contract. Whatever gets you to sleep at night lololol?

I'm stuck in an iPhone 4 contract as well but I could of course sell and buy a new phone outright. I don't think I will unless the new phone is a complete redesign and is a must have. Don't think it will happen.

iOS 5 & iPhone 5 are both of great interest.

It would be nice to see some significant updates to the dated OS. I've had every iPhone and it's getting boring. iOS needs a decent notification system, and plenty more to bring it up to speed with the times.

I'm happy to read in the news that Apple has realized a 4.0" display is very important & rumors indicate they will use one in the upcoming model.

Of even greater significance is Apple finally admitting they need to improve the antenna and will do so.

Now I can look forward to a good iPhone that should reflect what Apple is truly capable of.

It's finally going to be exciting.

I'm also looking forward to iOS 5 rather than the iPhone 5. I am eligible to update from my iPhone 4 through AT&T, but I want to see what Apple offers with the new hardware before I decide what I'm going to do.

It doesn't seem the media sites have bothered to check the CAD files. 4" won't fit unless Apple changes the aspect ratio and gives us more of a letterbox layout.

I'm pretty pumped for both. But at this stage in the game I am more interested in iOS 5. I'm hoping that we see more options for customization and a new notification system. I still plan to upgrade to the next phone, but the software coud make it all the better.

Really? TUAW seems to disagree. http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/16/the-four-inch-iphone-display-doing-the-math/ Granted that only 1mm leaves on each side, which may include the antenna that sticks off slightly. That may even be including the volume buttons on the side. Regardless, I think Apple would be wise to go 4" and same aspect ratio. If they need to increase the width by a mm or two, so be it. If they can keep it the same size, even better!

my iP4 will hold me off till iP6 so yeah, I'm more interested in iOS5. But I think I would be more interested in iOS5 regardless. iP5 will be IMO a fairly predictable jump, and nothing too terribly necessary. Larger screen, more RAM, better cameras, LTE (doubtful), A5, better battery life... The one wildcard would be NFC, but who knows if that will happen and who knows if NFC will even take off at this point.

the possibilities seem endless for iOS5. Even if it only gives us things that we could already do jailbroken (widgets, better notifications, etc) it will still be a really good thing. I think there are also a lot more unknowns about iOS5, I mean really we don't know ANYTHING! haha.

Lastly... iOS5 will be coming to my iPad 2 :) Double the love for iOS5

They can throw numbers around all they want, but the CAD drawings disagree.

Look at your iPhone 4. There's barely room for the 3.5" screen. 4" won't fit unless they change the aspect ratio.

Do the math yourself. I just did. I used the official width 2.309" and discovered that that leaves exactly 2.2910600635167212029364798807689 mm of total width or 1.1455300317583606014682399403844mm of width on each side of the screen.

Now like I stated, I'm sure the official measurement includes the small metal rim that pops around the iPhone, but I'm looking at my iP4 and I'm looking at 1mm. If the volume buttons aren't counted in the 2.309" measurement, then I think it may be possible. Apple might have to redesign the border just a tad, but I certainly don't think it is a stretch to think apple could keep the same size. 1.14553mm on each side just may be enough.

I really do hope we get something much better but I fear Apple will be complacent and not recognise the competition when it comes to advancements.

Good point. With never ending demand, Apple can stop ugrading & do some profict taking.

I'd be glad to be proven wrong. I want a 4" screen as much as anyone else. I've also looked at detailed tear down images and you're forgetting there's also a plastic edge around the screen. There goes your 1.14553mm on each side. There just ain't room for 4" in the current design. Now if they redesign the thing and make it wider, sure, but we're talking about a 4" screen fitting on the existing phone, not a remodel.

This is all pointless though. Apple could come up with a newly designed face plate and prove us both wrong.. we'll see.

Personally, I'd like to see them widen it out a bit. I think it's too skinny as it is.

yeah, I actually noticed that as I was closely examining the edges earlier. It's close. And maybe Apple would find a way to sink the silver frame into the iPhone without having to redesign anything at all. I dunno. All-in-all I think the iPhone could afford to grow a little, both in width and height. IMO of course. I'm not saying it's too small, but if the iPhone grew a few mm in both directions, I wouldn't object. Heck if the iPhone grew to 2.5" wide it could accomodate a 4.5" screen. I don't know if I would need a 4.5" screen or not... but that would add less than 5mm. not too unwieldy if you ask me...

oh but back to iOS5. I bet you Apple is going to drop one thing on us that's awesome that nobody was expecting. In addition to the possibilities like widgets, multitasking UI, notifications, and everything else that is being talking about, there will be one surprise. Just like how nobody saw airplay coming.

Won't fit the iPhone 4, what makes you think they'll just try to slap a larger screen on last years phone? For all we know the iPhone 5 has been widened a bit just so it can fit a 4 inch screen.

You are confusing speculation for facts, nobody outside of Apple knows what's in store for the iP5.

Oh please, I'm praying to the Apple-gods that they actually don't increase the screen size. Why?

Because that means one of these two things will happen:
Larger screen size, same resolution = lower pixel density = bad :(
Larger screen size, higher screen resolution to match pixel density = iOS apps fragmentation á la Android. And I have developed apps for both Android and iPhone, and let me tell you, Android is a nightmare.

I'm very interested in iOS 5.

Current iOS seems so underwhelming with the power the iPad 2 (and future iPhone) is rocking.

This is why they won't widen the iPhone 4 out. It will no longer fit in ANY iPhone dock. When they squared out the iPhone 4, they had to narrow it so it would fit in the same foot print.

This conversation has become tiresome.

IMO, I am more excited by the iPhone5

I absolutely love the iPhone4 and enjoy refreshing my phone every year. I can't wait to get a phone with more RAM, more space, and a better antenna

This is me too, I love getting a new shiny iPhone each year. :D

My predictions for iOS 5:

- Spotlight screen gets a major overhaul and notifications added
- Dynamic home screens (depending on time zone and time)
- Enhanced folders (as stacks or lists viewable like Dock in Mac OS)
- selectable Folder icons
- Major overhaul of the Mail App (stars, flags, different fonts and styles)
- AirDrop for iOS & dedicated File App called Files
- iPhoto for iOS
- iWork for iOS

- New Multitasking API's (e.g. no complete sandboxed apps any more and enhanced communication between apps.
Like the possibility to add a task to Things or Omnifocus through the Mail app - like it is now in Mac OS)

- Voice integration in every app
- SMS app gets competitive with WhatsApp and other similar apps with BBM like functionalities.
- Webkit 2 for Mobile Safari
- Possibility on the iPad to view two apps simultaneously in landscape mode (except video playback apps)

That's all I can think of right now:D

If iPhone 5 does not support 4G/LTE, then I'll likely be sticking with my 3GS... But I really don't see how Apple could be so stupid not to support LTE at this point. They will really be loosing market share to Google devices if that is the case. The dual-core HTC phones will also be out this summer, and Motorola is ready to release theirs in the next month or so... Both will support 4G.

I don't know what IOS5 will have, but I can't really say that there is much I am missing... At least not much that AT&T would let me have anyways.

Most iPhones are sold outside of the US. Ergo, what happens in the US is completely irrelevant.

I really do hope a lot of this happens. I'd be disappointed if Apple didn't make a huge step up with their iPhone 5. This really is the year they need to shine with improvements and if they don't... I wouldn't be surprised if Apple starts losing a lot of money from people switching to other platforms.

I am starting to get a bit annoyed by all the people yelling, "iPhone5 better have a much better notification system." Yeah, well it has little to do with the hardware and more to do with the software; and yeah, iOS5 better have a better notification system. Guess what, I bet it will work just fine on the iPhone4 as well!

Sorry had to say it. I'm with you though, I'm much more interested in iOS5 then I am iPhone5.

I think what people mean is that if the iPhone 5 has a bigger screen + new non-intrusive notification system then they'll still have more screen real estate than the iPhone 4.
Once Apple starts integrating that CPU and GPU to iOS 5, then the iPhone 4 will start to lag. Whether Apple will do that or not is up for speculation, but it happened with the iPhone 3G so we'll see.

Here's hoping for all of those, except iPhoto. At least the ones i bolded.

I'm glad you know what Apple will do.

Besides, like already shown tuaw proved it can be done even using the iP4 dimensions, nobody knows the dimensions of iPhone 5 outside of people at Apple, and unless you work there and aren't telling us, you don't know either.

I'm more excited about iPhone 5 because I really don't have a problem with the OS, so everything new is a bonus for me. I'm more interested in the actual hardware.
