It depends. It's more comfortable than iPhone and less comfortable than real keyboard :D

Precisely. I really enjoy it though. I'm typing on it right now. I hardly feel like it's less accurate. It's just the fact that i need to switch keyboards to use quotations and stuff that's kind of annoying but I'm glad they added ? and ! to the main keyboard by using shift. AND UNDO/REDO BUTTONS!!!

I think everyone's gonna be real happy. (I've got a 3G 64GB on order; had to get this 16GB wi-fi to get the experience immediately)

How can you all afford this ****? I would love to have an iPad, let alone two, but damn, got bills to pay. I though this was a recession?! :D:p

I absolutely love this thing. Typing is a lot better than I expected. HD movies look great. Web browsing is really good, but I do feel Flash is really needed before it can be called the best. I love my giant iPod Touch.

Am I the only one that would love to have the ipad stuck to my back just like in Tron with the disks.

Walk outside, pop your hand above your shoulder, grab the ipad...then later put it back there. Since it was announced I have only been thinking about carrying it like that for some reason instead of in a carry bag or something.

Then imagine if as you are walking people can see what is on the screen. You could run videos, ads...there are all kind of fun stuff that you could do with that.

But mostly having some sort of magnetic attachment maybe with braces on your back would be awesome for when in commute. Maybe a strong magnetic shirt with strong earth magnets to hold it in place even when running lol.

iPad Lemur

thats what we need. I hope that JazzMutant wises up and makes a lemur app and realizes no one is going to pay 2000USD for an Lemur with no Wifi, inferior touch sensitivity and inferior screen resolution when you can buy an iPad with all that stuff. Just a thought. :)

I don't know why everyone went so early. I went about 3pm at Best Buy and there was no line or anything. It was just like walking in to buy a dvd or something. Please don't panic. I'm in Las Vegas too.

If you can, try to get the 30gig at least. Some apps are over a Gig. You'll fill it up in no time.

I played Scrabble with 2 iphones today, with my girlfriend for about 2 hours on it. Battery was great., only used about 50%. Already charged out of the box.

I couldn't really afford the ipad, I spent money I didn't have, but I just wanted to have it. Now I'm not sure what to do with it. Some games are cool, but I don't read and not planning on watching movies in my lap. It's a great traveling device though if you have a Wi-Fi connection.

Besides all that, it's a kick ass piece of quality. Movie trailers look amazing as well as the graphics. The video quality puts iphone to shame. What I'm going to do with the ipad, I have no idea.

Here's what's missing...

And no, I'm not going to say Flash. But here are some things I noticed quickly after playing around with my new iPad for several hours.

Where's Waldo?
--------------
No Clock App
No Calculator App
No Weather App
CoverFlow *gone* from iPod
No ability to sort your searches using the YouTube App
Minor bugs in iPod, in where playlists sort songs randomly within albums

Those apps are what I've come to expect with my iPhone/iPod, so those not being here were a surprise. I already have a calculator and weather app, but it would be nice to have the clock so you can run timers, alarms in the background.

The battery life is all it was promised to be! I've been using it for like 5 hours and really love it. I was thinking, if there were about 10 apps I have on my MBP, the iPad could really take a huge bite out of my overall computing time. Right now it's a winner at viewing content, and I hope content creation grows stronger and stronger over time. Apps like Blogo, Wallet, Times, MacJournal, to name a few, would make my life much easier. I wouldn't always need to reach for my MBP to create content.

Next revision, a mic and front facing camera for video conferencing could seal the deal. This is a great first gen piece of hardware, and I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones to get on board.

Also, Netflix app is kinda weak. It seems it's just their website wrapped in an app. I'd like to see a complete ground-up rewrite with better navigation.

As always, if anyone who has an iPad in hand can correct me on the things I mentioned that are missing, please do. If they are hidden somewhere, clue me in.

+1

Dropped by Best Buy. They have demo models and are taking orders. One thing the guy pointed out is that there's a photo app on the Demo iPads, but when you start it, it says "Camera not found." Not sure what to make of that.

As a photographer, there are some areas where it could be useful, primarily in doing presentations. It's an incredibly elegant way to show people photos while sitting at a desk together. You can hand it back and forth, and zoom and sweep with it. One thing I was hoping for (I'm probably the only person in the US who was) was that you would be able to build the photo books on it. The answer is "Not now. Maybe later." These books are pretty good little money spinners, but you have to be able to sit down with the client and let them make a lot of the choices about which photo goes where. The iPad would have been perfect for that.
I could also see it as being useful as a way to upload photos to some of my sports clients during halftime of a football game.

For presentations, combined with a pico-projector, for small groups you're in and setup in about two minutes.
I don't see it as a serious editing tool, and I don't think Apple sees it that way either. If they did, iWeb would have been an early App.

Thumb typing this on my iPad (in landscape mode - yes, I have large hands). I completely agree with what you are saying. I particularly love the way you can just turn the device depending on which way a photo is oriented without having to edit (rotate) them in iPhoto first. It's great for sharing photos, minor editing of docs, reading and playing games together (which is superior to smart phones who are more ego-centric), e-mail, Twitter, web-surfing, etc.
The one bummer for me is the limitation of exporting in pages, numbers, and keynote to PDF. A camera would be nice (for iChat). Just observations after my first twelve hours with it.

The biggest joke is the 16gig size. Too bad apple couldn't eat $5 into their profit margins to make the entry level 32 gigs instead of 16 gigs.

I have a 16 gig ipod touch and with SOME of my music and a couple of apps it's full to the brim. I have NO room for photos, NO room for any video, and I have to pick and choose my apps (especially big ones like games) and constantly delete music to put new stuff on.

32 gigs would be the MINIMUM to make this device worthwhile, with 64gigs being comfortable. If I were to have an ipad I want all of my photos on it (several gigs from iphoto), I want a good amount of my music (maybe only 5-10 gigs, it's not an ipod so I probably wouldn't put my entire library onto it), I want a good amount of video, and lots of apps. I could see myself filling a 32 gig ipad to the max from day 1, and then having no extra room after that without going back and deleting something (which sucks). I want to take this with me instead of a laptop when I don't have to do work, so I can show pictures/video/music to friends and family. What good is it if the storage is too small (16 gigs) to actually bring any of my content with me? I'll have to bring my laptop with me if I want to get work done AND if I want my data with me, which makes the ipad useless.

I'll wait till gen 2 when the bugs are worked out, there is a huge library of good ipad specific apps, when it gets an updated and tweaked OS, a front facing camera, more power, and REASONABLE storage.

I think at gen2 this thing is going to be revolutionary for one main reason, the apps. As all of the critics have pointed out this is just a big ipod touch, so it needs a big library of kickass apps from creative programers who can think up awesome ways to use the ipad that make any other sort of computing seem like a joke. Right now there is none of that, but we're starting to see a glimpse of it's potential.

It will be a year before any of this is established, and by then the 2nd gen will be SO much better in terms of hardware.

All of the 1st gen ipad owners will be twiddling there thumbs for a long time until some really great polished apps start to come out and people get more and more creative (not to mention the bugs being worked out). I'll just twiddle my thumbs with my mbp and wait until the real ipad is released next year.

WiFi signal

My MBP has full bars (WiFi) and my iPad sitting right next to it has only the bottom bar lit up. Where is the WiFi antenna? Behind the black Apple in the back or running along side of the front bezel? It seems I'm getting a much degraded signal than my MBP sitting right next to the iPad.

Got the wifi model, despite having 3G on the way. Amazed as I knew I would be. This is going to be big. Really big.

ok guys, I'm serious. Someone lend me $499. I'll mow your lawn all season or something. :(

stoopid minimum wage..

mine aswell... I had to break out another router and dd-wrt to increase coverage to acceptable levels

Hmm, I'm having very good WiFi reception on mine. (Full bars from basement to 2nd floor and on back porch with Airport Extreme 802.11n)

If you don't have access to a different router - maybe you can test at a Starbucks or McDonalds WiFi hotspot. If you still can't get a reasonable signal, maybe you have a defective iPad.

Dear Apple,

Please put the @ symbol on the "front" page of the keyboard like you do with the iPhone.

Otherwise, neat gizmo.

The @ symbol is only on the "front" page of the keyboard for email fields or if an app's developer configures it that way. Its default position is on the numeric keyboard screen. This is true on both the iPhone and iPad.

I don't know why I felt the need to correct you on this though...

Will wait until 2nd generation

Hopefully people will bring feedback to apple and some common sense....just a camara, USB PORT!!!! and 32GB entry level iPads.

Alright, some folks need to understand something. Some of the apps like Keynote and Pages are gimmicks to make you think you can do real work with the ipad. This is mostly marketing here guys. This is why my Windows friends make fun of Apple and I'm getting tired of it.

To me, gadgets like the ipad and iphone are just to make life more fun and convenient... and lets face it... it's what you show off to your friends too. The ipad is mostly an entertainment device. Even if it's a cool way to check the weather and stocks, it's still fun and cool unlike anything else out there period.

We don't need the ipad or an iphone, these are really geeky products for folks that like to use the latest and coolest thing -thats all. Because the ipad IS cool as hell and that's what I like about it. Now for REAL work that pays the bills, I will be upstairs hammering on my MacPro.

So with that said. Please don't feel the need to justify the price of your new toy to make it seem like a necessary tool. Because I highly dout it is. Just enjoy it, make more excitement in your lifes with your families and be happy. On Monday, it's time to break out the mouse.

what about the capability to view .avi files on iPad? is it as simple as sync'ing the .avi files from iTunes as well? or even from digital camera using the camera adaptor

How is pages a gimmick? Please explain that to us. I have been on these forums for alooooong time, and I have never seen so much negativity to apple products as I have seen to the iPad. Why?

Well, because people just want it all. Some things just take time. Apple makes choices that are practical for their products, and to keep people from shooting themselves in the foot. Believe or not, it's more important for Apple to create flimsy apps like Pages then a USB port. They need to market a way to use this device productively, or create an illusion of it. And a USB port? That's what itunes is for. I know, it's the Apple cult. But it's worth it and makes the integration of their products more tighter in the long run. This makes them the company they are.

I love all my Apple products. I don't use all their software apps because some are not for serious work. Now there are a number of people on here that will agree with that. Put those aside and use what you want.

The only 'negative' comment I have is the MacBook Air. I just don't get that product. But that me. And I don't own one.

How is pages a gimmick?

You can't view or edit the documents you created on your iPad on your PC (because there is no Excel or Powerpoint export in mobile iWork) so it's pretty of a gimmick.

Remember that probably 80+ % of iPhone or iPad users have a PC and not a Mac.

I'll have to disagree. I only used the iPad a short time at the Apple store yet I think it could be useful for my work. Not as a full time replacement for a MBP but certainly as a support device. I can easily see using this to run a presentation through a projector. I can easily see giving impromptu presentations. I can easily see making minor edits to presentations. Similarly with documents. I can see making edits to existing docs or even creating short documents while traveling.

In photography they say the best camera is the one you have with you. If the iPad is all you have it will suffice to do some useful things till you get back to the big iron.

It's not an either or situation. It's not iPad or big computer. It's how to use both in a productive way.

I went down to best buy this morning. Only a few people there so I got to try out a display model ipad...

Yes, it felt nice in my hand, etc...

but the screen SUCKED

When viewing a reading app, such as the NYTimes, the text was very blurry. A complete joke when compared side-by-side to my iphone 3GS

This thing might be good for surfing and watching video clips, but anyone hoping to use this as a ebook is going to be sorely disappointed.

These reviewers either need to get their eyes checked or come clean about shilling for apple.

ummm I am thinking its your eyes that need checking, i have been using mine for 12 hours now... and find it quite easy to read the screen, its a bit heavy but thats a different issue
