I don't get it

I don't get it. Presumably making the iPhone smaller, but retaining all of the functions of the bigger one, makes it cheaper? How does shrinking the screen but keeping the screen resolution of the regular iPhone make the iPhone nano any cheaper to make? Okay, it could have just 4GB of RAM, but they can just do that with a regular iPhone as well. The differentiation between products would be solely based on size? If anything, the iPhone nano would be more expensive, because they have to cram more features in a tinier package. They could of course dump the WiFi, but that's just a few cents shaving off manufacturing costs. Also note that the iPod nano has about a tenth of the storage space of the iPod Classic. iPhone nano and iPhone 3G differentiation wouldn't be on size, clearly, but it would be based on 3G versus EDGE. An iPhone for everyone. But how would one type on such a small screen?

iPhone nano: EDGE
iPhone 3G: 3G

I really do think there are going to be iPhone Nanos. So many people are doubting it, but I think its true!

And I agree with "Freeny". As soon as its released, I hope someone bring these topics up and silence the doubters. Everyone should have seen this coming anyway!

If apple rolls out an iphone nano, do you think they would also roll out an ipod touch nano as well in the future??

If anything, I would say the current nano as it is (iPod) days are numbered, and the iPhone nano/iPod Touch nano would be in the same family, and iPod Touch/iPhone 3G are in the same family. As for the iPod classic, who knows?, The clickwheel is fading away fast.

yeah i think its true too.

didnt this site get it right with previous ipod nano and ipod touche case releases?

i expect though maybe a slightly different interface...that will be the surprise...

and what if the main interface of the regular iphone is upgraded? like new apps are included in the factory setting and will be installed via firmware update and the old or "current" interface will be the nano

What i find funny is all these people who are so opposed to an Iphone Nano. Most of you already have an Iphone, so what does it matter if an Iphone Nano is released? Don't complain about typing on a pinhole keyboard when you already have an Iphone, or have the option of buying one instead of the nano. The point is that you people are angry that something new is coming out and you no longer have the latest Apple phone. To add to that it will be less expensive and more easily accessible to the masses which again makes you upset because now everyone and their mom will have an Apple phone. Apple is in the business of making money, and a smaller less expensive phone will only make them more.

Discussing the stupidity of a concept and complaining are two different things. I suggest staying out of the forums if you don't want to read peoples opinions.

hey man curious ..

how do u like time capsule. does it work well.. can you pm me. I would like to get it but i wanna make sure it's a good investment..

Problem:
Too small to type like on the regular iPhone.
Solution:
Keyboard is landscape. You can see a bit less of the SMS conversations though.

Problem:
iPhone nano would cannibalize iPhone 3G sales.
Solution:
Cripple the iPhone nano. Remove WIFI, 3G, Safari and all the advanced apps.

Problem:
How do you make it affordable?
Solution:
Less memory (start at 4GB), less accessories, no 3D graphics, no accelerometer.

Problem:
Everybody has an iPhone already
Solution:
Make a prepaid option so teenagers and people with criminal records can get them, too. Just pop in your favorite provider's SIM card.

I personally don't like contracts and wouldn't get any cell phone with a contract. Prepaid is cheaper for my usage anyway.

It seems to be around the same size as the HTC Touch, and the typing on it wasn't that bad! The iPhone is bigger than most touch screen devices out there, anyway. So there's room for a smaller iPhone device.

i doubt it. wouldn't all the app developers have to remake or redesign their apps to work? Would all the apps that have customized keyboards in them have to be resized? From a developer stand point it would just cause way more confusion. You might have people trying to download iphone nano only versions and some people trying to download iphone 3g versions that aren't compatible with an "iphone nano". If it does come out, they'd better make a special restricted store for it.

If Apple releases an iphone nano I think it will be one of its biggest mistakes. I don't see the need for it, and think it would be unusable due to its small size. I was looking at my iphone and trying to figure out why anyone would want one any smaller, you couldn't type easily or see much. Also, the price savings I wouldn't imagine being very much, maybe $100. Why would you buy an unnaturally small iphone nano that has to be crippled in other ways too, just to save a $100, it wouldn't be worth it. If these rumors turn out true, Apple might be on the downslide of their recent success. I'm hoping they are not.

:apple:The regular phone would still be avalible its like the razr v3 and the v270 they were the same in software but look wise made their prices different and both did good. This would be a good move for Apple in my opinion.:apple:

:apple:The app store probley wouldnt be on it. It would be for a simple user!:apple:

I just don't get the concept behind an "iPhone Nano". The iPod Nano is a smaller iPod because it uses flash drives instead of an hardrive. Considering the iPhone is alredy flash-based, how could they use any smaller storage? Shuffle-class drives? I doubt anyone would be satisfied with a 1/2GB iPhone.
What about the screen? All the apps available out there are made to fit in a 3.5" screen. If they were going to put a smaller one, it would have to be like 220dpi, which would make text and buttons unusably small, not suitable for a touchscreen.
I still don't get it.

True, the OS is about 2GB alone.. Doesn't leave much room for apps + music.

A) Everyone saying there's no point to an iPhone nano... wake up. There's always been a trend towards making things smaller, and there's no reason why they couldn't create another class of phone (as others have suggested, scale back some of the features, etc).

B) Here's my one thought for why I'd like to see an "iPhone Nano". I'm one of the few who thinks AT&T rate plans are ridiculous and will not change carriers just for an iPhone. I don't know the details of AT&T's exclusivity agreement, but if Apple were to introduce a separate, different model that doesn't fall under that specific agreement, they could make it an EVDO / CDMA phone for Verizon / Sprint networks-- further market penetration for Apple.

The rumors may be totally bogus... but I do wish Apple had a device available on other carriers besides AT&T.

Me too!
Sooner are later, scammers are going to start selling styluses for the iPhone Nano on eBay.
You buy it, and then realize that the iPhone's touch screen doesn't work with it.

While traditional plastic or metal styluses don't work with the capacitive screen, there actually are styluses which do work with it (by mimicking the capacitance of human skin), which is useful for accessibility and so on. I have no idea if that's the case with those ones you linked to, though.

[edit] Oops, didn't see macidiot's post above.

and how in the world can anyone expect to type on such a small device? .. I call it fake, I get this feeling apple is getting smarter and leaking out fake information.

If the screen is higher resolution, you could have the same real estate in a smaller space. Or, if just some of the blank, unused space around the top and bottom of the iPhone are removed, basically making the front all screen, you have a smaller phone with exactly the same screen as the current iPhone.
