Here's my one thought for why I'd like to see an "iPhone Nano". I'm one of the few who thinks AT&T rate plans are ridiculous and will not change carriers just for an iPhone. I don't know the details of AT&T's exclusivity agreement, but if Apple were to introduce a separate, different model that doesn't fall under that specific agreement, they could make it an EVDO / CDMA phone for Verizon / Sprint networks-- further market penetration for Apple.

My sentiments exactly. If this product is real, who ever said its for AT&T? Since its technically a new product, new negotiations and deals with a carrier would have to be made. It may go to Sprint or Verizon (I think Verizon would be more likely). That, and just like the iPhone, the iPhone Nano may not be seen until the June timeframe because of prep.

What i find funny is all these people who are so opposed to an Iphone Nano. Most of you already have an Iphone, so what does it matter if an Iphone Nano is released? Don't complain about typing on a pinhole keyboard when you already have an Iphone, or have the option of buying one instead of the nano. The point is that you people are angry that something new is coming out and you no longer have the latest Apple phone. To add to that it will be less expensive and more easily accessible to the masses which again makes you upset because now everyone and their mom will have an Apple phone. Apple is in the business of making money, and a smaller less expensive phone will only make them more.

Discussing the stupidity of a concept and complaining are two different things. I suggest staying out of the forums if you don't want to read peoples opinions.

Couldn't agree more solSYST - I really thought the tone of the first post was very negative and not at all why I enjoy coming to macrumors

now back to the point...I really don't see the iphone nano happening, as has already been mentioned I can see the idea of a touch nano happening, personally I am waiting for a 10" tablet for at home

D:apple:

If the screen is higher resolution, you could have the same real estate in a smaller space. Or, if just some of the blank, unused space around the top and bottom of the iPhone are removed, basically making the front all screen, you have a smaller phone with exactly the same screen as the current iPhone.

This would potentially address the issue of Apps rendering correctly. It doesn't however address the issue of peoples finger size in relation to the screen size. Higher resolution means either more detailed images of the same visual size, or same images reduced in visual size to meet the new PPI.

My wife has not wanted an iPhone though she has had ample opportunity to see how they work, there are 3 in our family, until I mentioned the iPhone Nano rumor to her. She immediately exclaimed, "Now, that I would get." If true, they will sell millions and millions of them.

Also, as has been mentioned earlier, a landscape keyboard will solve any problem with key size.

First of all, i'm sorry if i offended anyone, it didn't come out the way i wanted it to.

Second, an Iphone nano would not be stupid. Like others have stated, it would obviously have to be crippled in it's features so that it wouldn't cannibalize 3g sales. It would just allow Apple to dominate the cell phone manufacturing market to a certain extent. Think of all the people who would jump on this because they can't afford a 3G. It may very well be an Ipod touch nano, but if they made a nano phone then more power to them.

I don't mind the iPhone nano. I just wished AT&T has an option to have the data plan optional.
For some folks that want the phone and the functionality of wi-fi for internet, the additional $30 p/month is a deal breaker.

iPhone Nano? I just don't see it, but love seeing new products and the creativity behind them.

I am going with the poster that said maybe the screen is not changing and the phone is just getting a lot shorter.

Who knows, I think Apple will surprise us with whatever they launch. Although I still hate the new iPod Nano look and love the old fatty much better.

Why is the majority opposed to an iPhone Nano? Is it because most of you bought an iPhone for a ridiculously high price and would be flaming jealous? My god, you're a bunch of cry babies.

A phone without 3G? Pretty much every good phone made in the last few years has 3G, at least in Europe.

funny

My wife said the same thing. Even the 3 iPhone family thing.

As I have said before tho, I don't really care if Apple is making this thing or not 'cause I would never buy one, at least if it's crippled. Plus I want the iPhone to go to an Al enclosure like everything else. I don't care if it has to have a little black patch for signal. Besides it just demonstrates Apples care of fit and finish.

Surely if it’s the same resolution just smaller, rather than having Qwerty when in portrait it'll have an on screen number pad..?

You'd text on it like every other phone without a keyboard? tapping each number a few times to cycle through letters.

It's not like that would cripple it's usefulness as a phone, it wouldn’t be aiming for the smart-phone market.. In landscape QWERTY would still be slightly painful but probably doable. :)

Not sure if i think this thing exists or not though, haha.

:apple:Why would they sell it? It has to be coming out our they look like complete idiots!:apple: Still it does feel like a longshot!

I don't know how many times this can be repeated: IF Apple comes out with an iPhone Nano it is SOLELY to get by the ATT agreement.

The more phones you put in people's hands, the more APPS Apple will sell. This new phone is designed to do just that - sell apps, be a phone, and work with other providers.

NanoLogic

:apple:The app store [sic] probley wouldnt be on it. It would be for a simple user!:apple:

While that makes a lot of sense logistically, it would be uncharacteristic for Apple to cut off users from another revenue stream. GPS could easily go, a camera would make sense (if Apple doesn't get money from MMS), maybe require people to buy a headset to use the phone... those would all be characteristic Apple moves, but hard to make work logistically.

I would think Apple would do much better to offer whatever nano phone they make unlocked, as the service is clearly the real cost.

WORD! This could be HUGE if offered on other providers.

Has anyone thought that maybe it's the new ipod nano? Basically adding touch to the nano line.

That would make more (but not complete) sense. What is skewing acceptance is the name "iPhone Nano." The iPod Touch also requires a keyboard for email and Web browsing. Is there a market for a Touch sans Safari, email, notes, and calendar? (Maybe the smaller model would eliminate the App Store and rely solely on third-party apps.)

Apple better release this thing soon! The distance between my ear and my mouth is shrinking fast! ;)

i mean, i would like to see this device released. but i think i'd rather see a netbook device that runs iphone apps
I'm with you on this one. I'm still hoping every day for a mini-tablet (or whatever it will be) rumor.

I just did a quick and dirty analysis of the picture, and (assuming equal camera hole sizes) it looks like the regular iPhone's display is about 1.8x the size of the iPhone nano's. That would make the iPhone nano's display around 2.6".

Maybe Apple sent them false dimensions for what they did before so that company loses money on producing fake skins for something that will never be released. It's possbile... The company has no right to leak information like this.

I've thought for a little while about what the benefits of Apple having a phone sold and operated by two competitors (AT&T and Verizon) would be, but cannot come up with an idea as to why this would benefit Apple. Anyone want to throw around some ideas to illustrate? I've never been a capitalist, so I cannot think in the cut-throat way that most companies think; capitalism is, after all, a broken economic system.

Interesting. Could be.

It is very possible that this is a new iPod Nano. I think the glorious clickwheel is on its way out. It was great for its time, but someone (Gizmodo?) recently posted a diagram of how complex the menu structure is on the present day iPods. It is getting difficult to navigate.

Also, didn't Jobs say that eventually all iPods would transition to OS X? Maybe I'm making that up, but I thought I heard it several months ago.

However, it is unclear whether the iPhone SDK would be fully supported the way it is on the Touch. Even Apple's built in apps wouldn't map over well to a smaller form factor.

Eventually, something has to happen. The Touch is great but it is just too big for a lot of people. Folks have gotten used to working out, jogging, etc. with something the size of the Nano. And the new Nano is too long, IMHO. Trim the clickwheel and increase the screen size slightly and you have a winner.

I can't believe you guys have missed this.

iPhone nano would a basic phone plus iPod.

Kids can't afford an iPhone, but they all have regular cell phones....all it needs is a text app and the phone app coupled to the touch based iPod.

50 bucks on a contract with a boat load of texts included, every high school kid across the country would by one.

iPhone nano will not be a smart phone...just a way for people to replace their iPod and phone in one device.
