Well, I am thinking that they need 6-8 weeks from the final version to the boxed version thats shipped to prepare everything.

So unless the next month is FULL of Leopard Seeds, it would be hard to believe they are making any progress for a before June date.

How was tiger handled, since I don't recall.

so nobody is looking at the obvious, the invite for WWDC in june has the Time Machine look to it. That's where leapord is coming out i'll bet. There would be no reason to look at NAB as the platform for an OS launch. It'll happen at WWDC. Plus Apple wouldd rather get us excited for WWDC than NAB. Just my 2 cents.

someone said there was a calendar on the invite, what is the date on that calendar?????

Nope, that's not it. I'm betting on April. Time machine refers to the fact that they are ditching the "i" and going back to the Mac. This would make the "i" line personal and portable(iphone, ipod), the mac line for computing (mac, macbook, mbp, mac pro), and the new "apple line, ala' apple tv the begining of something totally different. Expect the imac to go away at wwdc and the mac to return....or maybe dare I say it, the reintroduction of the Macintosh!
Probably not, to be honest.

Time Machine? Just another reason for losers not to buy an external drive and backup properly. Time Machine won't help you if you get the flashing question mark on startup.
Time Machine actually requires an external drive. It makes it easier for novice users to back up their stuff, and that's a good thing.

Resolution independence? Worthwhile to be sure, but hardly the most pressing feature to include.
Eh -- it's an important thing, because it means Apple will have to stop making excuses for lagging behind PC manufacturers in terms of dpi.

Upgraded Mail and Safari? Woopee.
Will have to agree with you here. Mail has two good points: being able to provided an integrated view of all your Inboxes, and Address Book integration. IMAP performance is not so good. Thunderbird, alas, sucks when it comes to AB, and while it lets you create search folders (so you can lump all your Inboxes together), within them threading is broken.

Give me a more stable, more secure, more interoperable operating system that lets me get my work done more quickly/efficiently.
Sure -- that's why it is going to be UNIX '03 certified, and will have ZFS support!

Leopard will be a neat release -- I'm preparing to dump my current laptop on eBay -- even though it's going to be worth almost nothing -- and use the extra cash to make sure I have at least 2 GB of RAM. Now, if only Apple would let us buy a laptop with only one stick of RAM, or drop their RAM prices so I won't feel ripped off buying 2GB from them..

I predict..

Here's another tidbit from the Developer page
http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/ada/rules.html

The APPLE DESIGN AWARDS 2007 Contest (“Contest”), which is sponsored by Apple Inc. (“Apple”), begins Monday, March 12, 2007 and ends 5 PM (Pacific Time) Monday, April 23, 2007. The CONTEST recognizes outstanding achievement and excellence in Mac OS X software design.

Eligible Entries :

If entered in the BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD APPLICATION category:
Must execute directly on Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard build 9A343 (or later).
May be a pre-release version (or better).

Please notice the minimum build number. It is 9A343.NOT the current build of 9A343a.The "a" being the operative key here.

There is a 9A343a AND and 9A343b ( internal build) I'm guessing.

This tells me another and more refined build will be coming out real soon.

Based on this... I predict Leopard will be released on Tuesday, April 24th, 2007. The contest submission end date tells all, why else would a Mac OSX software competition end then... to push publicity (as if it were even needed!) for 10.5. I say that NAB will be product releases (Mac Pro, Cinema Displays, Final Cut), as well as the announcement that 10.5 will be released on the 24th (unless this announcement comes sooner). This way, the new products released at NAB will ship with Leopard (it normally takes a week after keynotes before new stuff starts getting shipped, doesn't it?).

Look for the new Santa Rosa Macs (Macbook Pro, Macbook, iMac) to be released at WWDC or in late May (or spaced over this time), and then the iPhone a week after WWDC.

Lastly, the Mac Mini probably won't get a special event, if its lumped in at NAB it won't be surprising but I expect it to just appear on a tuesday in the near future, it won't get Santa Rosa just yet.

Time Machine actually requires an external drive.
No it doesn't. It works best with a separate, external drive, but it really doesn't matter for the sake of software requirements.

Don't be silly. They have to set a version floor for developers for the contest. There's no reason to extrapolate a release date from that. If developers are creating software to enter based on Leopard, they can't use anything released after the contest begins--you have to normalize to a build that will run on the judges' machines.

To do otherwise would introduce potential bugs and performance issues for the contest, which would make it difficult to evaluate.

The software competition is for innovative application concepts, not marketing for Leopard. Instead, it's almost guaranteed that Leopard won't arrive in April, because these developers will need time to fix for later builds after the end of the contest.

I think that April is a good time frame. Why would you come out with Final Cut Pro BEFORE Leopard? If you say that it could be for Leopard but come out before, wouldn't Apple have just released iLife and iWork '07 at MacWorld? If they release it before, then it could give out "super secret" features. I think that there should be some Leopard activity at NAB.

I have to make a very important correction to my post..

It's currently 9a377a NOT 9a343a..

Haven't looked at my Leopard for a while.DO'H!

I agree wholeheartedly. I think this was the most obvious sign from Apple that Leopard will not be released until June 11. It stinks to wait that long, but what are you gonna do, switch to Vista in the meantime?

I think that April is a good time frame. Why would you come out with Final Cut Pro BEFORE Leopard?
First, what does Final Cut have to do with the software contest? Second, why not? It's not like Final Cut Pro requires Leopard as far as we know. We don't know that they will release Final Cut Pro in April, for that matter.

I think that there should be some Leopard activity at NAB.
NAB doesn't have anything to do with Leopard. Apple should talk about Leopard next month, absolutely. Whether they choose to use NAB as a stage to do that remains to be seen. In any case, Leopard will not be on shelves in April. It's just not ready, and there's no reason to rush it.

XP Family

I am a long time Windows user that is about to switch the entire family to Macs, but with all of the rumored changes to the OS, Mac Pro and iMac lines I have decided to hold off on the purchases for now.

I have been waiting since January and have a question. How Apple released new versions in the past? Have they announced future ship dates for new operating systems or do they always wait until it is ready to ship before introducing it?

Also, I really like how Apple uses the market/media to build anticipation for new launches. However, I do think it is odd that they do this with their OS. To me an OS is like the stock market...the less surprises the better.
