They can probably already do the "no touch" proximity thing now. From what I've heard, the iPhone's screen uses a capacitance method of sorts, detecting the electrical energy/field from your finger. If you could make that detection process more sensitive, it would be reasonable to think that you wouldnt' have to come into contact with the screen if it can detect your finger at x millimeters away. Then again, I'm a mechanical engineer so I don't know much about the electrical side of things. I guess it might be harder (and more expensive) to implement such a system on a large display as shown in the video though...

I don't think that it should be that hard to implement. Anybody else recall Apple filing a patent last year for a iPod style device that didn't require touch? It worked of the electrical magnetic impulses from your fingers to manipulate it. Of course we then get onto the whole course of using hard drives in it, which means either magnetic shielding or solid-state memory, which Apple seems to be in a transition to doing. Of course then the iPhone uses solid-state does it not. Maybe the iPhone actually doesn't need to be touched? All we've seen is Steve use it and a few tech demos, maybe you're right about just tweaking the sensitivity.

That was my incoherent tech ramble for the day. Good night.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm chiming in to say that the big wall thing is now on sale for the low low price of $100,000 :)

What was the point of this video? Apple put multi touch in the phone and they made it useful but what was the point of this video if its useless? they dont really show what it does except zooming in and out and moving pictures around. make it useful for people for use it and we are gonna buy it.

Who sale this sort of screen

hello,

you seem to know who can sale this type of screen, right ?
Can you give us some more infos ?
thanx in advance

hubbida hubbida hubbida *drools*

i soooooo want one of these

hoepfully my faculty will buy one eventually as all the stuff they demonstrated in the video would be soooo useful...but not to the tune of US$100,000

but just think guys...in 10-15 years, MBP's will be like DS's :D

Efficient? Really?

this sort of thing always struck me as incredibly INefficient.

I mean, it's cool looking... and has some limited applications in presentations and whatnot...

but i can do all that stuff, more or less, by moving my mouse 3 inches. why is it better to wave your arms all over the place?

Maybe in a Wii sort of exercise thing... but i'd rather just sit here and move my fingers ever so slightly, rather than standing somewhere and moving my arms around in huge sweeping gestures. (but then, i guess i'm pretty lazy. but lazy is EFFICIENT.)

and for editing video? are you kidding me? that's mostly keyboard shortcuts once you get going... really cutting something like that would be a nightmare, i would think. BUT, editors would end up alot skinnier.

"I just finished cutting my short film... I had to run 37 miles and do 9000 jumping jacks." :)
