I don't understand the point of having a task bar for multitasking... why not just use the home screen and have a badge to identify which programs are running?

Seems just as much work to go to the home screen and scroll to a program as it is to go to the multitask bar and scroll to the program... at least on the home screen I know exactly where it is!

What happened to "if it needs a a task manager, they blew it"? :D

As far as I know, the task manager is just there as an option. You don't ever have to manually close applications as the OS would close them accordingly(last recently used) as memory runs low.

I'm not sure that this can be called a task manager. Yes, a task manager can be used to terminate processes, but they also tend to give you much more control and information regarding those processes. This just multitasking to switch and close apps.

I am just jazzed about the screen orientation lock. Although a switch like the Ipad would be a whole lot more convenient.

The multi-tasking started good, but the more and more I see about it, it will be terrible. I open hundreds of App's on my phone everyday. I don't want them all to multi-task just a select few. And to close them it needs to be like dragging a Application of the dock a little poof and its closed. I like the new features, but these need to be straightened out. I don't think I will update... sadly because no matter what iPhone, iPad or iPod touch you are using after you open 20 apps your phone is going to be slowwww!! Maybe we need flash, just to crash and close all the apps.

If you're going to go by the number of swipes and taps as a measure of efficiency, this implementation is more efficient than having a badge on the icon. If I start running many, many apps at once, it might not be any more efficient, but I can't think of how just badges would be less work.

If anything, both options could be useful.

'bout time I can use my iPod Touch/iPhone as a USB stick!

Can you though? I would like to be able to use the iP memory for backing up my desk machine via USB. That would be faster and more reliable than WebDavWiFi which is how I do it now. This allows me to keep a nightly updated mobile copy of my work with me. That way if something horrid happens (house fire, robbery, astroid-earth collision, etc) then I have a backup.

Unless these are all apps that are running in the background, I don't think it will change the performance much more than it stands currently. Multitasking just gives you an interface to quickly go back to a "paused/saved" app.

You dont get how it will work.

Watch the April keynote and come back.

Applications need to register what multitasking they want to use. So although they are in the "task manager" that does not mean they are necessarily churning away in the background. And as I wrote before, the OS takes care of memory management with multitasking, so unlike older phones (like WinMo), the phone should not slow down as you use apps throughout the day.

Is the Game Center app a standard built in app like Clock Photos and Settings?? Or we get it from the app store??

Wow, this is really groundbreaking.

JB people been doing this for 2 years now. :D

Guess who's copying now.

You still don't need a task manager. The ONLY thing that's for is people with OCD who don't like seeing items on the list. The system is perfectly capable of shutting things down when it needs the resources.

"Needing" a task manager would imply that you actually have to use it. An iPhone user will be 100% A-Ok to not even know that that thing is.

That doesn't sound like "needing" it to me.

This beta is sooo much better than the last one..

Regarding to quiting apps - I think a better way would be just to drag them off the dock into a puff of smoke - like you do on the mac.

Absolutely! I have been thinking of that but it really doesn't look iPhone like. Maybe because a similar practice has already been adopted by the webOS.
But otherwise, it would be very easy and fast.

I would prefer fewer mechanical switches. Mechanical things wear out faster than a touch screen. I've seen this over and over again in the real world as well as looking at it from my engineering point of view.

Heck, all the mechanical buttons could be eliminated. Capacitance can be used for an on switch, home button, etc. Front-Back. Four corners. etc. The iP could be truly sealed and made Real-World-Rugged. We need that. Drop it in the drink, drop it on concrete, drop it in acid, keeps on playing.

The only issue I see is making batteries that have far better cycle counts and last for decades. Then the skin of the device can be made into a solar collector, including behind the screen, so that the iP grows it's own power like a plant.

BTW, there is a new glass about to be released that is far tougher than current glass. Definite candidate for displays.

File sharing still looks like it's going to suck. Oh my god just buy Dropbox and have all the apps reference that type of filing system. Their implementation is not seamless or intuitive as Dropbox

question: When removing an item from the multitasking cue wouldn't it be easier to tap, hold and flick out of the tray instead of tap, hold, and tapping?
