Some people are completely misunderstanding this multitasking.

First off the dock at the bottom is no more a task manager than the OS X dock or windows task bar. They all show running applications and all have the ability to close applications.

The dock is a 'fast app switcher' not a multi tasking dock. ALL applications show there weather or not they multi task or not.

'Multi tasking applications' do not stay running in the background. They are paused when they are closed and restored when opened. Developers can have certain services running in the background for example an audio stream but they do not have the complete app running.

So does this mean, when we save a document in the app, it will automatically sync it back to the file sharing in itunes; then I can just drag it to my finder and work with it in heavier software (like full blown iWork, MS Office, photo editing [ie photoshop, iphoto, aperature])? One can hope.

Man, I hope so. I was thinking about that last night...all of these documents that I'm creating in iWork...what happens if my iPad crashes? There's no way (that I've seen) to properly backup those files without emailing them all to yourself, which is ridiculously cumbersome.

Just noticed a new feature. At least new to me.

I just noticed an animation when you have one app open and you go to the multitask and open a new app the old app draws back and disappears to the left and the newly opened app appears from the right.

I think it looks pretty awesome. . . It could just be me, I just updated from Beta 1 to Beta 3.

This was added in beta 2. I agree it looks very slick.

Several people are complaining that the new iPhone OS handles the closing of apps differently than they expected. Specifically, they state that the app should be closed by dragging it off of the dock, like you do in OS X. While this is a good idea, technically the statement is incorrect. In OS X, you don't close an app by dragging it off the dock. You either hit Command-Q or just select Quit from the Menu. Trying to drag an open app off the dock will not work in OS X. Rather, dragging a closed app's shortcut from the dock simply removes the shortcut from the dock. Yes, it's a small point, but a valid one.

i dont think anyone is implying that you close apps this way in OSX, more the nature of how you remove something from a dock-like area and the animation used. i'm pretty sure most people suggesting this idea know how to do basic tasks in OSX like closing an application...

These new features are sweet. I am getting more excited for the new iPhone. It was be even sweeter if the new phone is released early June. :D

I think a better way would be just to drag them off the dock into a puff of smoke - like you do on the mac.

That's a good idea. I don't like the red minus sign above the app; it sends the wrong message. Usually it means that I'm going to delete an app, not just close it. Maybe instead have a circle with a slash through it instead of a minus sign.

I'd like to be able to remove Apple's default apps as well. For instance, I don't use the default weather widget, nor the stocks widget nor the iTunes widget. I have them relegated to their own screen. Why not just make them vanish like third party apps? If I ever want them back I can always just restore my iPhone. Or they could be included in the app list in iTunes. Just because Apple made them doesn't mean I want them.

I still don't need how people think tap-hold-flick is easier than tap-hold-tap to close apps.. A flicking motion obviously uses more from the person than just simply tapping. Although cooler animation wise (potentially) it isn't necessarily easier.

File sharing still looks like it's going to suck. Oh my god just buy Dropbox and have all the apps reference that type of filing system. Their implementation is not seamless or intuitive as Dropbox

EXACTLY.

File sharing....in iTunes...via a cable? Are they nuts? That's so last century.

Come on Apple. I've had wireless sync for years now on my Mac, PC (with iSync, DropBox, Missing Sync, Ovi) and Nokia/SE phones (with iSync, Missing Sync, Ovi).

Soooo annoying that everything has to be wedged into iTunes.

This beta is sooo much better than the last one..

Regarding to quiting apps - I think a better way would be just to drag them off the dock into a puff of smoke - like you do on the mac.

That is a great idea...
Maybe we should email Steve Jobs this one :D

The idea is you can flick the whole application icon as opposed to tapping a small round circle in the top left.

Going to upgrade my 1st gen as well. What's more... I'm finally going to use my $100 credit that Steve sent me for shelling out full price for the original iPhone. :)

Man...I thought I was a holdout when I used the credit last year for my 3G!

Is there a way to close an app without it going to the multitask pane? I have over a hundred apps and don't want them all on my multitask pane. This will kill the usefulness of the multitask pane if I have to scroll through a bunch of apps in order to get to the one I want to switch to. I might as well have to find it on the home page.

It's a phone. I's a very small, tiny device. Not a laptop. Why would you need so many apps open at once?

I've always said they should just add ALL the stock apps as options to the parental controls 'restrictions' section.

Ok, so it doesn't make 100% sense to have the 'Compass' be something you have to turn off to protect your kids...but whatever, it's a system that's already in place and has some stock apps in there...just put them all in there and be done with it.

Not to mention it is not in line with the actual way other deletion options work in the OS.

'bout time I can use my iPod Touch/iPhone as a USB stick!

My GUESS is that you can only drag&drop files from the computer which you sync you iPhone with.. They won't let you use it so that you can go to a friend, drop some files on your phone, and drag the off at home.... Please correct me if I am wrong!

Otherwise, nice additions..

You won't have to. Most people will never use this so-called 'task manager' and they'll be fine.

I'm not so sure about that.

How many people use Command-Tab to switch apps on their Mac or the Dock? I use those all the time.

Similarly, on my Nokia, hold down the home key and it shows a task list exactly like Command-Tab on my Mac or like this new feature in iPhoneOS. I use that all the time to switch between running apps.

I think this method of using the 'task manager' will be popular especially amongst people who already 'get' that you can do more than one thing at a time on a phone. ie. everyone other than iPhone users, but they'll get it eventually, probably proclaiming Steve as inventing it. ;)

All I really want is the ability to answer a text message without it opening the Messages app. Notification arrives, hit reply, it allows me to type a message right there, hit send and then I am right back in my app. Without switching or anything.

I know this can be done on jailbreak, but I really wish Apple would just add that little piece to notifications. If I had that, I might not even care about multi-tasking because Pandora would be open and just keep on playing (or game paused, or whatever) while I answered a text.

Having a Pre it seems like it would be easier and faster to just flick the icon off of the multitask pane. Kind of like flicking a Card off the screen for the Pre.

Genius. This would be a much more effective way of closing an app. :) Please do it this way Apple!

No, to delete an app there is a white-on-black 'x'. That's why they're using the white-on-red minus sign instead, to differentiate between the two.

As for the members here advocating the "drag app off to close" method:
Let's see... Would I rather touch and drag to close apps or simply tap? I'd like to tap please. I bet I could close 3 apps by tapping in the time it takes you to drag just one off of the app switcher. Simpler is better IMO.
