I don't think this is going to be the final finished iPhone. Think of what we know about the next gen iPhone for sure. We know that Steve Jobs had a lot of input in it. It was suppose to be 'one of the most amazing things he has ever worked on'. We also know from Tim Cook that it's going to be spectacular and beautiful. He himself said that what they have today on the market is amazing, but there is so much more stuff to come that is out of this world. And clearly, what's what any CEO would say, because they wanna keep people hyped up. But the amount of energy everyone seems to have put into this next iPhone, or at least what we hear from Apple executives and journalists, would not result to something like this. It might be a prototype, but I can't imagine it being the real thing. It doesn't look nearly as breathtaking as other pieces of Apple hardware that Jony Ive had designed. It looks unfinidshed. Like something is missing. After all these years of using apple products, I can't imagine them coming out with this.

That's not to say that they won't. They might, and I might be wrong. But if this is the next iPhone, without a doubt it would worse than almost every iPhone before it.

I'll jump out and say you're wrong..

Why? Well everyone said the 4s would be a flop because of no LTE or bigger screen or any new design changes.. And look at it now.

It will sell, and will do so with no problem whether you're on board or not.

Please point out exactly where I said this iPhone would not sell well? Or where I compared it to the 4S? Even if this is the final finished version of the next gen. iPhone, I'm well aware that it will sell millions, and will once again become a huge hit for Apple. I was just saying it isn't very like them to have a back part of a device made up of so many different parts, for no real apparent reason. You could argue that the top and bottom are glass/plastic because of the signal, but we can see that the bands around it will likely be the antenna once again, and also, the original iPhone had the metal back, and apple crammed everything in the bottom of it that needed signal to get through the device.

And also, the 4S is a fine phone. I never had anything against it. It continued the great legacy that the iPhone 4 paved. The design is still amazing and no one had really made a phone that looks better than the current iPhone. This prototype (or whatever it may be) will most likely not be it. If it's truly a leak, real news sources would have jumped on the story by now, like NYTimes or any actual newspaper. They're slow when it comes to tech, but if a new iPhone is leaked they would jump right on it, sorta how the iPhone 4 was found at a bar. If this is a true leak, and it is the real thing, I'm shocked that it hasn't gained more traction by now by other media outlets. Apple news is what's hot in the tech news these days. And a new iPhone being leaked would normally be all over the place. So far I've only seen it on some tech blogs, here, and a few other Apple only tech cover sites. Nobody outside of the 'rumor' world had said a word about this entire thing. And that's why this doesn't seem legit to me. Do you honestly think an iPhone got away from Apple's hands (even though it isn't complete) and they did not say a word about it? And it just went over everybody's head like that?

You forgot the open mind part here. You've already passed judgement on an entire phone by looking at the back cover and without seeing it in person.

It does look like prototype piece, the fine milling work hasn't been done on the inside of the case and the speaker holes appear rather large. The new iPad also had prototype cases with larger speaker holes, so that's probably exactly what this is. Honestly though, I really like this design and I doubt anyone with an open mind can say it looks worse than the back of the original iPhone. Perhaps there are a few though.

It's longer...

So that when you hold ur phone, and tap on the NFC terminal, that you can still have a monkey grip and not drop your phone when you are paying..
:D

I like the new iPhone design. :apple:

i agree also that this phone wouldn't be the best iPhone yet(outside wise). We have been having redesigns pretty spot on in the past. If you don't count the first iPhone then the 3-3gs/ 4-4s(huge change completely different. If they continue one more year of basically the same phone on the outside a lot of people will be mad me included. I love the look of the 4 and 4s but i really hope it doesn't go this way and its more refined. A kid could design the way this new phone looks like if he based it on the 4 and 4s. No cool new design seems lame to me.

It's funny how people complain about the width and how much they are agains't an iPhone that will be a bit wider, but the same people seem to forget the dimensions of the iPhone 3g 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm now iPhone 4 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm.

I never had a problem holding and using the iPhone 3g i never find it to wide or anything and i believe if apple was going with dimensions like 115.5x62.1x9.3mm making the Bessel smaller aka taller screen+ using this 3.5mm of difference in width to make the screen also wider then i believe we could have a screen that is taller+wider without making the overall phone bigger.
I don't know if i make myself clear here since english is not my language but i tried...

did not realize the older phones where that wide. i can see apple going as wide as the 3g/3gs after seeing those numbers and then increasing the screen size longer too.

Are there any materials experts in here?

The inside of that back just looks odd to me.

- With the rough long ridges, it doesn't look like cleanly extruded or milled aluminum.

- The way the standoffs are welded in seems unusual too, with the islands around them.

It feels like either a knockoff's case, or perhaps something made of a composite material with the standoffs inserted during molding.

But then, I'm not a materials person, and would love someone with knowledge to make some comments. Thanks!

Something is strange here, it's been said to be aluminium but it can't be.
If you look at all the holes on the side(Dock conn.-headphone jack etc.) and the raised metal to affix some of the internals on the inside you see they are highly glossy like chrome.
You can make aluminium shine but it will start corroding/oxidizing instantly and won't be shiny long.
Therefor I think this is made out of a different metal, be it stainless steel or another metal, can't be liquid metal either because it can be molded and this one is machined.

The screen size of this phone doesnt match the 1136x640 resolution that was discussed. I did a perspective crop of the phone next to a 4S. The orange area shows the resolutions.
You need to adjust the aspect ratio also; notice the home button is not round, but wider than it is tall. Adjust for that and a 16:9 display fits fine.

I completely agree. Jony wouldn't have left it like this. It may be nice in person but it just doesn't sit right having 2 different materials on the back.

I just don't see it.

Oh god.. the same uncomfortable ice cream sandwich-like design? C'mon Apple you can do better.

Otherwise, looks good to me!

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple made the next iPhone longer. In fact, I would be pleased if that happened. I hate fat and wide phones. They resemble too much of mini tablets. There had to be some visual difference between the iPhone and the iPad. So I'm glad that they seem to be taking the longer route, rather than just bigger overall. Besides, long phones have always looked sexy. Even back in the day, before the iPhone was even out, the nicest looking dumb phones were long and skinny.

Lay off the dew and yellow 5...

I never accused you if saying what you're assuming I think you said.

I am stating what all was being said in the past about the 4 to 4S design.

Care to eat your words and make a wager? Anyone with a clue will realize these parts are legit.

So the day Tim does his interview and states that Apple is going to "double down" on the secrecy of their upcoming products, these pictures appear and we are supposed to believe they are real? I am sure they are real, just not sure they will be what the final releases product has. Did everyone forget last year already? The iPhone 4S that I am holding in my hands looks nothing like what all the parts "leaked" and mock-ups told me it was supposed to look like this last year.

What is more, you have the CEO saying that what is so great about Apple is that there is no fragmentation of devices. What would changing the iPhone doc connector do to this? Think about it.

I don't understand why everyone is complaining? It's a picture. A quite blurry picture, mind you.

Truthfully, I thought the iPhone 4 looked ghastly in pictures as well, and then I held the device in my hand and wow...it was wonderful. Unlike anything I'd held before.

When it's released, and professional photos are taken, showcasing the phone and all it's best features, you will all think it's gorgeous just as we all have since the first iPhone.

If there's one thing Apple knows, it's design. And design sells.

That article was released at 6:59AM.

The conference interview with Tim Cook was more than 12 hours later.

It wasn't a coincidence. The person who released that photo would have to have been reading Tim Cook's mind to know he was going to say that about the secrecy.

Actually, it isn't. Look closely and you can see that the back is flush with the perimeter band, I expect the front glass is also.

Take your tin foil hat off your head.

The leaked photos last year was "Phone Cases" if I recall. I don't remember anything that is remotely close to all the photos and blueprints to the new iPhone5.

Stop taking the CEO's word as being explicit. It is not. Are you really going to try and prove to me the phone doc will never be changed because based on that statement? This is why everything else you have said is just as silly and wrong. THe fact you can't see this is quite funny and sad.

You might be reading too much into this. Question about secrecy is a fair and common question that have been asked time and time again. My question would be, what would you expect as an appropriate response to this question? Unless he specifically points an incident it is highly unlikely as it would stir up more drama and crazy tin foil comments and focus away on their expected tactful answers. Giving such answers can and would be looked at subjectively already. Looking back at the history in general about Apple's policy on new products and the incident with the stolen iPhone 4, it is no different and expected answer he would give.

White bands and a bezeled edge on the case... hallelujah! This should feel a lot more comfortable in the hand... the only thing I don't quite 'get' is the two-tone back, but I'm sure there was an engineering reason for it. Not that it matters, I'll likely put a case on the thing anyway.

I was hoping for a wider x taller screen, with less bezel, not just a taller screen, but I'll have to see it in person. I almost went with a Galaxy Note, but Android still sucks and it was laggy and felt really cheap (you can actually flex the phone from all the plastic Samsung uses).

I'm ordering a Galaxy III when they come out next week, to get 4G. After using it on my iPad 3, I can't tolerate the speeds on my iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 better come out quick, I know other people switching from the iPhone for the technology alone.
