Are there any materials experts in here?

The inside of that back just looks odd to me.

- With the rough long ridges, it doesn't look like cleanly extruded or milled aluminum.

- The way the standoffs are welded in seems unusual too, with the islands around them.

It feels like either a knockoff's case, or perhaps something made of a composite material with the standoffs inserted during molding.

But then, I'm not a materials person, and would love someone with knowledge to make some comments. Thanks!

After a bit of Photoshop, here's how the new white iPhone could look like. 4" screen, 640x1136px screen, couple of mm longer than the 4S.

What's this?

I'm guessing something like this

Which before today I had no idea existed and now I think I might buy to negate the very portrait-gaming-headphone-jack-conflict I mentioned earlier!

You live and learn eh!

I've been using bluetooth A2DP headsets for years, and I've been through a lot. I highly recommend Jaybird Freedom. Owned a pair of Jaybird's a long time ago and hated 'em, but their "Freedom" line is awesome! Great sound quality, controls and handsfree mic. iPhone's iOS has supported A2DP natively for a while, no need for additional components other than the headset.

My AT&T iPhone 4 contract ends in September, I can't wait to pick up this new black iPhone on sprint.

I may be the only one who loves the new back, but damn it looks good. The taller screen seems just right, and I'm hoping these new speakers are better quality.

I can't believe at 29 pages I'm the first to post this, but..

No more plugging in the headphone jack in your cars aux jack and propping it up nicely in your car. Now it will be upside down in your cup holder.

Good thing you've never had to charge your phone in the car then...

Yeah, but those cup-holder type cradles always have a cutaway for the central connector...

Didn't know he was putting it in a cradle. If that's the case, use one that grips the phone by the side, use a right angle headphone connector or wait for the ones that will inevitably come with a headphone jack cutout.

That said, I'd like to see the iPhone Home screen rotate like the iPads.

Antennas

You can see that the antenna break points on the frame line up exactly with the top and bottom of the metal back. It's clear that they want to make the entire back metal but that would interfere with the antenna so they have made the top and bottom parts glass/plastic.

It looks a bit odd personally. Either make the entire back piece metal and find a way to make the antenna work or make the back plastic/glass. I'm surprised Apple's engineers could not work around the metal back.

In a sense this back part is similar to the orignal iPhone back which was two thirds metal and the rest was plastic, to allow the antenna to function properly.

All they have done is made it symmetrical. I guess the top and bottom parts are different antennas.

Those speaker/mic holes show they are pictures from an iFon.
The surface finish of the metal piece is obviously an iFon.
Looks like an iFon.
Sounds like an iFon.
Smells like an iFon.

Wait...maybe is an iFong.

Not bad...

I like the new design, but...

The new dock connector will stop me from upgrading. I have loads of little docks around the house, and the expensive zeppelin it sits on, and the tomtom car kit, will all need to be replaced and I'm just not going to the expense in a recession.

Bad timing of apple to make us upgrade everything during a recession.

If your AT&T service is good stick with it because Sprints data will be much slower even on 4G

*sigh*...I thought this new iPhone was supposed to be groundbreaking? They have essentially not changed the design since the iPhone 4. Just longer? No thanks.

Apple is supposed to be the leader in revolutionary products, right? This is very unimpressive.

I hope that this is just an early prototype design leak, and that the aesthetic design will change dramatically by the time it's released.

the speaker part beside the charging port looks so ugly ... like those pin holes on the videocard connecter ...

Imagine the following:
A piece of plastic;
with the old docking port on one end; and
the new docking plug on the other.

You could call it an adapter...

For best results, make the plastic as wide as the iPhone. so it's just like plugging in a longer iPhone. If you're really adventurous, get one with a headphone port extender too.

LOL how about one on the bottom AND one on the top? Surely there's still room on the top too. And if it doesn't make release maybe it will show up on eBay years later a la the landscape port iPad :).

But seriously ... headphone jack on the bottom is the best part of the new design; really hope that comes to pass.

I might get crussified for saying this on this particular forum, but please try to keep an open mind.

I don't think this is going to be the final finished iPhone. Think of what we know about the next gen iPhone for sure. We know that Steve Jobs had a lot of input in it. It was suppose to be 'one of the most amazing things he has ever worked on'. We also know from Tim Cook that it's going to be spectacular and beautiful. He himself said that what they have today on the market is amazing, but there is so much more stuff to come that is out of this world. And clearly, what's what any CEO would say, because they wanna keep people hyped up. But the amount of energy everyone seems to have put into this next iPhone, or at least what we hear from Apple executives and journalists, would not result to something like this. It might be a prototype, but I can't imagine it being the real thing. It doesn't look nearly as breathtaking as other pieces of Apple hardware that Jony Ive had designed. It looks unfinidshed. Like something is missing. After all these years of using apple products, I can't imagine them coming out with this.

That's not to say that they won't. They might, and I might be wrong. But if this is the next iPhone, without a doubt it would worse than almost every iPhone before it.

Yeah, but those cup-holder type cradles always have a cutaway for the central connector...

And they won't redesign it to work with this new iPhone, why?

I guess you're under the assumption that once made for one iPhone, that's it.. All iPhones should work with it.

Ha!
