When you have your earphones plugged in and are selecting tracks etc the cable has always felt awkward coming from the top considering the phone is at a downward angle and you are shortening the cable, by having the earphone jack at the bottom the cable is the shortest distance from your ears and feel naturally comfortable.

I think ergonomically it makes sense, aesthetically i'm not too sure.

Fair enough I suppose! I think the only issue I've had with the jack is when playing 'landscape' games it's always right in the way. But then neither top nor bottom would fix that!

And I can imagine what people would say about it being on the side! :D

Both? ;)

No more plugging in the headphone jack in your cars aux jack and propping it up nicely in your car. Now it will be upside down in your cup holder.

in the car that is true. but you can always use the dock connector to play music. if not drill a hole in the cup holder for the 3.5 jack. i did this in my cup holder with the dock connecter a few years ago.

Ha ha so true !

I guess there's pros and cons no matter where its placed, it wont always suit every owners needs but for general earphone usage i'd say its better placed !

So is that black face plate bigger in only one dimension - height? Or is it larger in both width or height? Hard to tell.

By looking at it, I would say it's bigger in both dimensions. Especially when holding up the 4S next to the image. (very scientific and accurate, of course) :D

The screen size of this phone doesnt match the 1136x640 resolution that was discussed. I did a perspective crop of the phone next to a 4S. The orange area shows the resolutions.

If those leaks are real, which I personally think, this will most likely mean that it will be introduced earlier than September.
Those pictures have been appearing from multiple sources now and it's also exactly the design that has been leaked.

I spent the $20 to buy a bluetooth aux-in jack thing. Best money ever spent in my life.

I've pasted the screen on the body:

It seems as if the screen is closer to the edge than with the 4/4S.

And is the metal border on the black casing darker than on the white casing? It seems that way.

I was negative at first then positive but now negative again after seeing that !!

The screen bezel looks thinner on the new iphone because of three reasons:

1. it's a taller screen so the sides optically look thinner
2. with the iPhone 4/4s there is a plastic white/black frame that holds the front and backplates together but makes the bezel look optically thicker. In the new design it's the metal rim that also functions as the frame for the glass.
3. the screen is not behind the glasplate and the screen is also a bit smaller than the opening making for an additonal increase in bezel perception

Wow, what a disappointment. I'd hoped they would ditch this iPhone 4 design. Instead they're tripling down on it. It'll still sell like hotcakes, I'm sure, as the iPhone brand has so much inertia...but if I buy it, it will be in spite of its industrial design, not because of it, that's for sure.

+1

It's not that the iPhone 4 Design was bad. It's just getting boring and it is far from perfect. I'm not that keen on the shape of the iPhone 4. It does not feel very comfortable in the hand. In fact, it easily slips out of your hand like a bar of soap.

Uhm you remember when the iphone 4 model leaked? That was three months before introduction. Now, this is a phone that appears to have just entered production. So you can easily add an additional one or two month to that timeframe.

I agree. This actually looks like what they might have been thinking about introducing last year when there was the delay to October. Everyone thought a new design was in the works, then nothing.

How does this leak factor in with Tim Cook's call for 'doubled down security' though? Seems the cat's pretty much out of the bag already.

Micro USB doesn't do everything apple needs. A dock connector is more than just a proprietary USB port.

Oh really? Then what's at the other end of the cable?

Disagree. As with the iPad, apple had months of stockpiling production prior to launch.

I also don't see a change in screen aspect ratio, still 3:2! It looks like the new iPhone will be a tad wider (compare the width of the home button to the full width). Left/right bezel is also a bit thinner. Because of the smaller top and bottom end they can keep the same height.

As a developer I don't believe they'll change the resolution and thus screen aspect ratio. If they keep the resolution and put in a 3.8" screen, it's still +300 pixels per inch, 4" would leave 285ppi...

Ps: love the design!

I dont mind the look especially the black one with its black sidebars.
Anyways is apple going to implement dual headphone jacks? (one at top one at bottom)
Or a small projector perhaps?
Or will it be just ipod style headphone jacks.

If it's in the top, put the phone in your pocket right-side-up, if it's in the bottom, visa-versa. Can't see that it makes any difference.

It's good to see the iPhone come out of the dark ages in terms of screen size though. I'm not so sure I really like the giganticness of my One X because it's near-impossible to use one handed - if I could get the hardware/1280x720 with a smaller screen, I'd be happier - I think about 4" is the sweet spot.

This and the fact that the design would make one want to set it down on the flat surface. That being the front glass facing. Not very good design.

But yes, you are right.

Probably something like that

Yeah, that's sort of ironic.

Man, that leak really is long isn't it? It will be interesting to see how that extra 1/2 - 3/4 inch feels in hand. Better than wider I guess.
