1. The solution Apple will give to the loss of the headphone socket is wireless headphones.. NOT lightning headphones.

2. There will be no earphones in the box with all future iPhones.

3. There will however be a variety of wireless ear/headphones for purchase on Apple's websites.

These are my predictions.

Much more disappointment.. instead of redesigning it with a cool wider coloured wire, they just put a HORRIBLE adaptor to lightning.. I don´t think it´s fake.. I think this is coherent with the NEW APPLE.. which doesn't surprise us anymore with awesome hardware design but they re-use shyly the older designs (such as iPhone SE or the iPhone 7) so DISAPPOINTING!

Although they're likely fake if Steve Hemmerstoffer is saying so, there have been many photos of these things floating around recently, all with the odd looking / larger than expected lightning connector.

I very much doubt iPhone 7 will have no audio jack and wired earbuds. If the rumour of no audio jack is true, and the rumours of iPhone 7's form factor being pretty much the same old thing are also true, they will have do to something to jazz up this model. My guess is every iPhone 7 will come with wireless headphones rechargeable through the lightning port in a minute or two, the way the Pencil is rechargeable from iPad. That way Apple will have something new and exciting to say about what might otherwise be a bit of a dull iPhone.

Good thinking in theory, but I am almost 100% sure that Apple will be too cheap to include wireless earbuds for free. Wired lightning ones included with the iPhone, wireless buds sold separately.

It's so obvious these are fake.

But no way do I think Apple will take away the headphone jack AND stop shipping headphones in the box with new phones. Just removing the jack will annoy people enough that they won't do both (and I'll bet most people use the headphones included in the box).

I am excited to see what the new Bluetooth 5.0 will bring.

Heh. I before I even saw the "fake" update I knew they had to be fake. The long connector step is way to clumsy and also begging to be accidentally snapped. No way would Apple push out junk like that.

I just don't see anything interesting about the next iphone. Might switch to the Note 7 or hold on to my 6S+ for another year.

This is so lame of Apple really does kill the headphone jack. You will not be able to listen to your music (headphones) while charging your phone. Who thought that this made sense? My teenage daughter sits on her beds listening to music via earbuds for hours every day while her phone is plugged in to prevent battery drain.

So now she will have to stop playing music so she can charge her phone because she can no longer do both simultaneously? Ridiculous.

A series of photos have been posted on Chinese microblogging service Weibo, and later shared by French website NWE, that provide a closer look at what appear to be Lightning-equipped EarPods. However, it cannot be fully distinguished if these are official Apple headphones or simply Chinese counterfeits.

Apple is expected to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7 series, and multiple rumors have suggested that Apple will release EarPods with a Lightning connector in turn. The headphones, beyond having no 3.5mm headphone jack, look nearly identical to current EarPods.

One discernible difference is the larger plastic housing around the Lightning connector compared to the 3.5mm headphone jack on current EarPods. However, the switch to Lightning likely means EarPods will be equipped with a DAC, or digital-to-audio converter, and it needs to be built in somewhere.

While these photos could easily be fake, the switch to Lightning-equipped EarPods makes sense given rumors about the headphone jack's impending demise. Apple may also release a dongle for connecting wired headphones with standard 3.5mm jacks, while wireless Bluetooth headphones will continue to be supported.

Apple's exact reasons behind its supposed plans to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack are unknown, but rumors suggest that iPhones could have wireless charging by 2017. The iPhone 7 is also expected to be up to 1mm thinner and have increased waterproofing compared to the iPhone 6s.

While the Lightning connector is expected to become an all-in-one port for audio output, charging, and accessories, only a handful of Lightning-equipped headphones are available today, including Philips' Fidelio M2L and Fidelio NC1L models.

Last month, Apple supplier Cirrus Logic introduced a new MFi Headset Development Kit, a reference platform that is designed to help "Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod" accessory makers quickly develop Lightning-based headphones. The development kit is available through Apple's MFi Program for registered licensees.

Those interested in learning more about Lightning-equipped headphones can watch our video: Lightning Headphones: Are They Better or Just an Inconvenience? We also shared a video showing what an aftermarket 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter looks like as they began to reach the market in recent months.

Update: NWE editor Steve Hemmerstoffer has updated his article to confirm that these are not official EarPods.

We have entered a grey zone of the trite and superficial. No new computer platforms, innovative excellence or exciting prospects. Apple badly needs an era of investment and enterprise we have missed since Jobs died. Apple is now only cool in geekdom.
My new computer, long overdue since my iMac self destructed, will definitely be Windows. Enough is enough.

I could tell these were fake when I saw them because the plug looks like cheaply molded plastic and is ugly.

Apple likes to make things look good. Even if the lighting plug has to be larger to accommodate a DAC, they'll do it in a way that is subtle and looks good.

I am confident that Apple knows this quite well and has a plan. Let's wait and see, shall we?

I see some issues with Apple removing the headphone jack at this point. For one, the current Beats lineup still utilizes the standard headphone jack. Then again, Apple hasn't been afraid of pushing its users toward adopters (Yes, I'm looking at you Retina Macbook). Two, does it really help streamline the device? All the rumors point to a similar form factors as the existing iPhone, so where's the advantage here? Possible cost savings, maybe.

I suspect Apple predicts headphones and other audio devices will be going mainstream wireless with improved bluetooth technology and better batteries (not to mention wireless charging). They have been known to preemptively positioning their product lines to take advantage of emerging standards and technologies. The abrupt omission of the optical disc on Macs being a good example. Plus, the user base is large enough for third party to jump on it right away. There would be dozens of aftermarket options available within a couple of weeks post launch.

So, I guess we'll see how well this is received, if true.

I read this on 9to5MAc and there was an interesting conversation I had over there. The thought was that removing the jack saved space because it removes the DAC. However, you still need a DAC for the speakers in the phone (could even be 4 based on other rumors). So, if the DAC will stay in the phone for the speaker, part of the reasoning should be in question. Also every design I have seen for other digital earphones place the DAC in the volume control not in the connector. The way this picture has it, would make it more prone to breaking especially since most folk will have their phone in their pocket.

Sure, I'm not embracing Lighting audio but if you are charging @ home then a cheap bluetooth speaker is a decent option. Plus it's safer than wearing buds. My beef is that I run w/ my phone and my earbuds have a nice compact L so they don't get in the way. I'm not a fan of B/T earbuds for many reasons. And the iPhone is first and foremost about portability.

I personally don't care if Apple eliminates the headphone jack on the iPhone. I can count on one hand the number of times I've used the headphone jack on my iPhone 6 in the past two years. But at this point, I almost want them to switch the phone connection to USB-C, just to throw everyone for a loop. :D

So, if the DAC will stay in the phone for the speaker, part of the reasoning should be in question.

Yes, I'm waiting to see how Apple explains it and whether its reasoning is "sound" or just a ploy to push a proprietary audio connector -- as if that is what the world really needs. I'm willing to listen, but I too don't see any good coming out of this and in 28 years it would be first time I've ever considered "upgrading" an Apple device with a competitor.

You would have the option of using a digital connection to used the DAC in the headphones, or use an adapter to use your old headphones.

This is not directed at you, so please don't take it that way. I have been getting very frustrated with Apple as of late:

<Rant mode on>

In addition to the options you have pointed out, I also have the option of going with a different phone and computer ecosystem. My wife and I have had iPhones since the first one was released. We also have been using macs since 2006 after switching from the Windoze world.

The DAC in the iPhone is actually excellent, but don't take my word for it: Just go take a look at the headfi forums. Most if not all users on this forum will never be able to hear the difference between any modern DACs in a double blind test.

Considering the current assumed trajectory of App$e, my family is sadly starting to look alternatives considering the fashionista direction of the company.

Case in point, when you consider that all of the devices we use headphones with and that have 3.5/1/4" connections with in our home:

We have three receivers, a 2500.00 professional DAC, a 1000 watt PA, guitar/phone interfaces, 5 computers, and our cars all use 3.5" jacks for universal COMPATIBILITY . That is just off the top of my head, we probably have more. Count how much money those devices might cost together. 50-100k depending on the price tag of the cars.

Now here comes Apple with a 800.00 phone that requires a proprietary connector... Now all of these devices are going license and add a lightening connector because Apple says the connector is old? Yeah right!

Oh so I can buy an adapter for 19.99!

Adapters do have one universal rule, they get lost easily and usually at the worst possible moment. I outright refuse to buy a dozen or more proprietary adapters from App$e just so they can pretend that they are moving the world forward from a technology that has nothing wrong with it.

I don't boast, but for the sake of this rant, I have been on about a dozen published CDs and many more recordings, many of which have been mixed in or recorded in my home studio. I have a very experienced and trained ear.

In my studio I can currently listen to and record 24 bit/192 Khz music with the crappiest 3.5" headphones with the right music sources and DAC. That is right, you bring me the worst but working analog headphones, and I will play 24 bit/192 khz music through them. Amazing isn't it????!!!! They won't sound anywhere as good as my $600.00 Beyer Dynamics, but they WILL play any bitrate of music available.

Anyone who knows anything about digital audio reproduction knows that going to "digital" headphones is mostly snake-oil when it comes to delivering the best possible audio reproduction. The lightening connector and moving the logical location of the DAC and amplifier will not magically make headphones better, but will in fact shrink the possible use cases for higher end users like myself and make us gallop to the competition. Oh and the competition knows this btw.

It has been a good run with Apple, but I am probably getting off the train at the next stop (Yeah go ahead and tell me good riddance, I don't care. I have music to enjoy and use cases that App$e apparently no longer cares about. I will gladly take my money else ware).

You know what is an older connector than the 3.5" jack? Yeah the three prong electrical outlet. Apple, it's time to ditch those old fashioned outlets. You should come up with a new safer and convenient design that requires us to replace our old fashioned electrical outlets. Oh and you can sell them to us at 79.00 a piece. I know there are a lot of people on this board who will gladly rewire their entire houses for you, then buy adapters for their old fashioned lamps, appliances, and other electricity consuming devices and laugh at me for my old fashioned 3 prongers.

</Rant>

I would guess that there is a better than 50/50 chance that if Apple does release an iPhone without an audio jack, it will have 2 (TWO) lightning ports. No adapter needed if you want to use Lightning-wired earbuds while charging.
