So I asked, why wouldnt Apple want to deal with an annoying issue (i.e. make it work on older devices) if it would earn them more money?

My question wasn't the same as yours.

Phrased differently. But it had the same point. Apple would have dealt with "an annoying issue" if it was simply software related.
 
Not to nitpick but Android 3.x was purely a tablet OS. No phone ran it....

Not a nitpick Google held it back.

So folk expecting it never saw it.

Android 3.x is a phone OS adding formal tablet features support.

Lots of OEMs had it (lab) , HTC almost snuck a phone out the door with it (pyramid)
