DVD importing?

I wonder if perhaps Apple will DRM the video that iTunes imports so that you can only play imported DVDs on computers that are registered to your iTunes account. This would help prevent pirating and it would be just like buying the movie on iTunes. That's pretty exciting!

Given the recent case against Real DVD, I seriously doubt that this will be well tolerated.

It doesnt look that exciting to be honest. It would be pretty cool if they changed the interface a little though the current one is nice enough.

Good catch! I've been begging for this for a long time, but didn't think Apple would do it.

If they're including DVD ripping, it to me is an indication they're getting serious about the home media market again (after the somewhat half-hearted support for AppleTV).

I know the images are fake. Nevertheless, they would NOT add DVD ripping without specific studio support, and then maybe not - I say this because of the case than Real just lost regarding DVD ripping and the court ruled against them cracking DVD encryption on grounds of the DMCA. Can't see Apple getting into that mess without explicit approvals from studios and the government. (Unfortunately.)

Kind of like the idea of Facebook integration though so I can see what songs my friends have added to their libraries. Great way to find new music.

Edit - I see some of you are quicker than I am... lol

Looking forward to the following verision

Will we see a complete overhaul with iTunes X?

After the RealMedia ruling regarding DVD backups, iTunes 9 native DVD ripping = fake!

While these screen shots are fake, the non-tablet music event Apple is holding in September would make a lot more sense with a new version of iTunes to show off.

Shouldn't this topic be moved to Page 2 or something?

ThIf Apple lets people rip all their DVDs then when people come to add to their collection they'd be far more likely to purchase new films through the iTunes store.

You're entirely correct. I would not want a movie library split between multiple locations, but if I had it all on my computer/media server, I would be far more likely to add to it by getting a digital copy online than buying another physical DVD.

And there's no chance I'm going to buy a movie I've bought on DVD again, especially a digital copy. Maybe on BluRay, but that's quite unlikely for the most part - maybe when I have an 80" television I'll rebuy LOTR and a couple of others...

Apple do have the power to talk the movie companies into allowing this, but I doubt it would be ready to go now. Maybe they've got an agreement to rip and transcode to H.264 for iPods. Maybe using OpenCL to accelerate the transcoding.

Apple should allow support for any media player except Palm Pre just to send them a message to suck it up and make their own music software. They were the ones that continuously stole it in the first place by illegal emulation.

But is it possible...

Apple simply can't add DVD ripping support. Movie studios can throw the DMCA right at them for circumventing copyright protection. It also slightly favours Apple/movie studios if the only way most consumers can get a movie onto an iPod/iPhone/Computer is to buy it through the iTunes Store.

The movie studios really, really, really don't want you to be able to do it.

*Edit* Bit slow :p *Edit*

Could a feature be added like such--you insert a dvd into your macbook and iTunes scans the disc to determine what film it is (similar to how cddb works), then iTunes will download a digital copy of the film for free or at a reduced cost? Essentially, you're showing that you have possession of a physical copy, and Apple is "giving" you a digital copy (from iTunes store, not ripped) for free.

Maybe they could release a version of iTunes just for non-US Mac users, since the DMCA doesn't apply to them? :p (I wish.....)

It's just a pity that even though Apple made CD ripping so easy for all, DVD ripping (which would be even more useful, given the length of time it takes to download a movie) is such a different and difficult proposition.

Free download through Apple if you own the physical DVD... I think I'll head down blockbusters and go for a mass rental session if that's the case!!

What is with the third party surprise?

Third party device support??? really? well Palm will be happy!

Hasn't iTunes supported third party MP3 players for a long time now? Fake or not iTunes 9 should be very interesting. Hopefully the social networking bit is a joke but the rest of the rumored features are very nice.

If nothing else I hope they get rid of the glitch where movie playback halts everytime you plug in your iPhone. That is one irritating bug.

While I would fully embrace and appreciate 3rd party support, I simply do not see Apple doing it-they don't want you to use your Samsung or Sony MP3 player they want you to use an iPod. I just think it may cannibalize sales. HOWEVER-DVD ripping would be beyond fantastic and assuming it can download art and other things from the store would greatly streamline the ripping process

DVD Ripping? That would kill iTunes Video sales big time! Naw I don't believe Hollywood would go for that if so then RealDVD by Real player wouldn't be in court. Facebook I see that. 3rd party support. I doubt that too. If Apple did then must been a Hell of a Deal! ;)
