That could work though. Remember, the iTunes store came after iTunes itself. In the early days everyone ripped all their music off CDs. However, then the convenience of the iTunes store took over. If Apple lets people rip all their DVDs then when people come to add to their collection they'd be far more likely to purchase new films through the iTunes store. I'm doubt many people will rebuy films they've got on DVD anyway although people are far more likely to rip their DVDs if iTunes supports it and with time their video collection could move from the DVD shelf to iTunes like the CD shelf has moved.

Plus ripping your own DVD might make the Apple TV some what useful. Right now I see the Apple TV as pretty over price and rather worthless. Even after this the apple TV will still be pretty much that way but it would increase sells of it at least. For me I would use that to import DVD then stream it to my 360.

Are there really that many tools here who can't wait to share their iTunes playlists on their MySpace and Facebook pages?

Oh never mind ... I think I answered the question.

Dvd

DVD ripping itself is not the problem, it's the lack of movie organization and tagging. Handbrake is very easy to use. The problem is that I don't think Apple will add proper movie and TV show organization until they have an included means for importing DVDs.

Maybe they could release a version of iTunes just for non-US Mac users, since the DMCA doesn't apply to them? :p (I wish.....)

It's just a pity that even though Apple made CD ripping so easy for all, DVD ripping (which would be even more useful, given the length of time it takes to download a movie) is such a different and difficult proposition.

True, but then we know that it's not entirely Apple's fault. But who knows. Maybe they've convinced the movie studios to allow a managed copy.

I won't be interested unless iTunes 9

1) Has native FLAC support, or a public plugin framework for supporting alternative codecs.
2) Support for moving iTunes libraries around. It's too much of a pain to move/backup/restore libraries right now.
3) Support for multiple iTunes libraries without requiring they be merged. A lossy copy of a lossless library would be my canonical use.

Social stuff I could care less about.

But those screenshots seem to suggest native DVD ripping, which would be great.

omg i would actually kiss steve's ass if they did this... knowing it ain't going to happen... i think most of these must be fake.... 3rd party device support? native dvd ripping, they are setting themselves up to lose money in iPod sales and iTunes movie/tv show sales?

My only hope would be that any "social networking" features can be disabled.

I think it's safe to say that it would be optional. At worst, you just wouldn't enter you Facebook details - it wouldn't be able to update anything without that info.

Snow Leopard Background?

Am I the only one who noticed? But to me desktop background(from what I can see) looks like the new one I've seen in Dev Builds of Snow Leopard. Does anyone else agree?

I hate to break it to you, but an amateur could easily photoshop those screenshots. I see nothing here that validates an official snapshot of iTunes 9. Perhaps, if you had a security camera image of Steve Jobs next to a computer monitor with iTunes 9 on it, that would be much more believable.

I just that it works well!

I hope itunes 9.0 is going to work a lot better than 8.xx in Windows based computers. I have a powerful computer, but itunes' performance is really mediocre.

LOL DVD ripping, ha ha no way, Hell with a netflicks account why would you ever buy or rent a movie from apple? No way DVD ripping will be allowed.

Please oh Please Fix Apple TV Sync

Since a recent update, Apple TV and iTunes have not played well together. We're constantly getting Firewall errors (even though there are no blocks on the Firewall). Others have seen this problem too.

If iTunes 9 does include DVD ripping, I really hope it includes EVERYTHING, not just the main movie. I'd like the subtitles/closed captioning (my dad's hearing impaired), plus the special features. I like watching the behind the scenes documentaries, listening to the director/cast commentaries and whatever. That's my main gripe w/ movies from the iTunes store: you're charged pretty much the same as the DVD versions, but just get the movie, none of the extras (or even basic subtitles).

oh wow...

what a lot of hot air and hype over a "feature" for the Twlight crowd.....

Bugs, fix bugs!!!! THAT and software/computer optimization should be the focus not useless "features".

How would Apple support DVD ripping? As (most) DVDs are (poorly) copy protected, that would be illegal in most parts of the world.

this could easily be photoshopped, all it is someone has print screened iTunes 8, changed around and erased wording and added a facebook section from iPhoto '09

DVD ripping & playing

There are legal DVD rippers on the market. Both Roxio and Nero offer DVD ripping capabilities...as long as the DVD isn't copy protected. Why shouldn't Apple allow it? Afterall, you can create your own DVDs with a Mac.

And I always wondered why iTunes didn't have DVD playing capabilities. This would allow them to eliminate their DVD player software. What's the use of having both?

I think it's nice having them separate, it keeps the DVD playing app more light weight. I like the idea of ripping my DVD's and watching the ripped version in iTunes, but for just watching a DVD I don't want all the bulk iTunes comes with.
Plus, If you could rip DVD's in iTunes I am curious about what the ripping performance would be compared to HandBrake, Roxio's, etc.
