If anyone's struggling with possibly bad or incompatible RAM modules, you might want to check the installation first. I just pulled the sticks out and reinstalled them, now they all work together. So I have 10 GB in 4-4-1-1. Performs well!

That's exactly the same setup I have and I too am running well.

I wonder if this 2x4 modules setup will work in my just ordered 2009 Mac pro Quad 2.66:

Is every thing the same memory wise compare to latest Mac pro Quad?

Yes, they should work fine in your Mac Pro.
Memory-wise, yes, they both (2009/2010 Quad) eat 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM, like the 8-core models. But 1333MHz RAM is fine, it just downsteps it to 1066MHz, even Apple ships all the models (both 1066 and 1333) with 1333MHz RAM.
Six and 12-core models work with 1333MHz RAM only.

Any of you guys have an idea what could be wrong with my Mac Pro memory config?

I have a Mid-2010 Quad 2.8 Mac Pro which shipped with the original Samsung 3x1 GB PC3-10600 RAM, that is, well, 1333 MHz.

I ordered two Kingston KTA-1066/4G for a total configuration of 10GB (4-4-1-1).

The problem is, that the machine recognizes all of the memory only in 1-1-4-4 configuration, but only 8 GB in 4-4-1-1 config, which is the recommended one. So it seems to have only 4-4-0-0. I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

so the 1333 sticks are the oem 1gb ones and the 1066 sticks are the add-ons ?

OEM for the 2.8-3.2 Quad and base octo are 1066.

you are correct but the poster G4-power claims his came with 1333 unless I read his post wrong.

my guess is the pro is confused with three differences between the sticks;

1066 with 1333

1gb with 4gb.

samsung with kingston.

btw it seems the poster fixed his problem and i missed that answer.

FWIW [probably not much] I have a refurb 2010 8-core that shipped to me with 4x2GB Samsung 1333. IIRC they were in slots 1,2 - 7,8 [or maybe 5,6]. I replaced them with 8x4GB OWC so not exactly sure now where the second pair were.

Yep. That didn't seem to be a (or the) problem after all.

OEM for the 2.8-3.2 Quad and base octo are 1066.

It seems that according to a few other people who have acquired a new Mac Pro recently, Apple now ships all Mac Pros with 1333 RAM, probably because it's cheaper to do so. At least my base Quad Mac Pro came with PC3-10600E memory, that is 1333MHz (10600/8≈1333).

It's true that the Quad- and 8-core systems have 1066 memory controllers, but they work alright with 1333 RAM.

That is correct, as I said earlier, my base Quad came with 1333 RAM despite the 1066 memory controller.
There were all those three differences, but after all none of them mattered. Even after dozens of memory installations I managed to make a faulty installation. So I took all the modules out and installed them again, pressing them even more firmly this time. Works!

I just came across this topic and I was wondering if this means that I could buy two 4GB sticks from OWC, and mix them with two 2GB sticks that were in my machine from the beginning, and get 12GB total? (I now have three 2GB sticks.)

I always thought that ALL sticks had to be of equal size, so in order to get to 12GB, I would have to throw my three 2GB, and buy three 4GB.

Thanks.
