Anyone here tired of hearing about the Apple AR/VR headset and just over it? 🥺

Nope. Bring on Apple's first truly NEW product in many years, after 6-7 years "baking" in the labs, attempting to do something that does not involve making one of the three legs of the stool slightly bigger, thinner/thicker, slightly faster, slightly better camera, etc.

Perma-fans/ADF to Perma-haters should be excited that we may finally get something towards entirely new out of mighty Apple... something to LOVE or HATE... something to dazzle us or disappoint. Whatever it is, it probably will be at least a year before we're discussing slightly faster, slightly better cameras, slightly thinner bezels, a new color!!!, etc as we do year after year for the same old products that simply get modestly repackaged/resized.

Here comes something towards entirely NEW... from APPLE! 🎉🎉🎉

To pass summary judgement before we've seen more than a handful of guesses & rumors is fools play. After we can see what it actually is, the wall of disgust vs. the wall of hope/excitement can clash and settle into legit, bona-fide opinions based upon something more than vapor. Until then, rumors, guesses, imagination, auto-pessimism and auto-optimism stoke all fires.

To those in the:
  • negative camp, only 14 days to finally see how terrible it actually is. Dig the grave deep!
  • positive camp, only 14 days to finally see how terrific it actually is. Erect the pedestal high!
What a difference a few letters- ble vs. fic- can make!

On the known facts of:
  • Apple having nearly unlimited cash resources,
  • unlimited talent resources and
  • 6+ years of development...
...I find myself in the -fic pool. Hopefully the prefix won't swap to Horri- upon "big reveal." My best gut guess says it won't (and I'm no fanboy- far from it actually).

I don't think they will have "Pro" in the OS title. That would mean they wouldn't be able to sell a pro version later on. They will sell this to the "pro" market at first, then create a better version and pretend like this was for the non-pro the the whole time. Unless they are just planning on the backlash from the price being so high that they plan on this being the "Pro" version for making content on the non-pro version to come later, but I still don't think they will put "Pro" in the OS title.

The Apple PR machine is kicking it into high gear. To fulfill Tim’s mantra of “doubling down on secrecy,” Apple plays these little registration games, because they generate media hype while seemingly being “secret.” Of course Apple needs to register to protect their IP, but they are fully aware they can’t actually be secret, so they use these little games to generate media buzz.

Isn't it obvious that it's standard practice for a company the size of Apple to register many different trademarks that are similar to the real name in order to prevent future bad actors from tricking people?

No, they aren't going to call it vrproOS. Not realityproOS. Not realOS. These are "just in case" registrations to prevent bad actors from using them.
No, it's not obvious, because normally trade mark law takes care of anything that would be too similar in the same space. It's not reasonable to expect companies to register all similar names to prevent confusion from "bad actors". Furthermore, I don't see how a similar name for an OS, rather than the product, would be a problem. Apple also hasn't registered clockOS, watchUltraOS, and the like.

How do you know this? Is there a global trademark search system in different countries? And how do you know if a trademark belongs to Apple or not since they use third-party agencies?

The first is "realityproOS," which was filed yesterday in New Zealand and noticed by patent attorney Narly Kalupahana. The filing was made by the same Immersive Health Solutions LLC company that filed to protect terms like "Reality One" and "Reality Pro" last year. Those terms have been rumored to be potential names of Apple's upcoming headset devices.

The new "realityproOS" filing cites a May 1 filing in Jamaica for establishing a priority date, a tactic commonly used by Apple to hide early trademark protection efforts as the trademark activity in the country is not currently available online.

The second trademark filing that has seen activity in recent days is "realOS," a term which was broadly registered in Europe last year by an apparent Apple shell company named Realityo Systems LLC to cover various aspects of computers and operating systems. Realityo Systems also gained some notice last year after it was discovered the company had submitted a filing for "realityOS" in late 2021.
Whats real or fake is all that is happening. If this was at all real it would have been leaked, not attributed to some shell company filings.

THIS THIS THIS. I just sent a PM to another member how tired I've gotten of all the negativity here. Their response was kind, but they missed my point. Not worth pursuing. I am very excited to see what Apple will unveil. It's been a long time since Apple Watch. The M series Macs were (are) great, but they're just improvement on pre-existing products. I won't (likely) be able to afford the new product for some time, but I am happy to see it unveiled.

Maybe you are 100% correct. I hope you are! Maybe Apple will surprise us all. Time will tell and we don't have too long of a wait to go now. The biggest factor will be the cost to regular consumers. My fingers will be crossed!

I am pretty sure Apple thinks people are waiting for these like we were for the iPad Pro or the Apple Watch.
Most of us just see this as a waste of resources Apple. Better focus on devices that are due an update from ages like Apple Mouse and Pencil.

What an oxymoron because back in the day we were warned on not to the sit close to the TV because it would ruin your eyes. lol

There's no correct. We have nothing but vapor driving our thinking. It might be spectacular. It might be awful. Revolution? Flop? Overpriced? Bargain? I know no better than anyone else.

With nothing tangible on which to go, any bets one might place should be on known variables:
  • Apple created this, not Google, FB, Samsung, Microsoft, Netflix, etc. Apple
  • Apple has no cash constraints forcing corners to be cut.
  • Apple has no talent constraints meaning they could use the best talent on this.
  • Apple has a history of "not being first, but doing it best."
  • Apple has a history of delivering "WOW!" much more so than delivering busts.
  • We know there's about 6+ years in this thing. That's a LONG time for any new tech to incubate.
  • Apple has an exclusive lock on their own line of chips that emphasize PPW over raw Power. If there is enough Power in that Per Watt, they bring a unique quality to this kind of product which obviously needs an insane combination of great power for processing virtual and augmented reality while using little actual power... something all predecessor attempts at this have had to take on without A/M-series "brains."
  • The fundamental concept of being able to show our eyes something that looks as real as actual reality means there is an unlimited canvas of possibilities to show our eyes and all of "it" can appear real. Pair that with existing products that can similarly fool our ears into seeming to be "there" too... and that's a whole lot of upside potential for 2 key senses.
  • The consistency of "many cameras" rumors implies the applications of AR are similarly towards unlimited potential too.
I find it hard- actually foolish- to just summarily bet against all of that before we have seen whatever it actually is.

After it is revealed? All bets are off. Maybe it's another "Shut up and take my money" or maybe it's the very first time in my nearly 20 years around here where the negative Nellie chorus can confidently write "I told you so" about a new Apple product... and be right.

All TBD in 14 days... hopefully.
