auto complete numbers

I think it would be amazing if they had a phone number auto complete/predict option.
Sometimes I receive or make a call and forget what the full number was but remember the first few digits.... I would love to be able to type the number and see all the other numbers that have come in or that I have made that began with that number...
thoughts?

Did anyone else notice how similar the AppStore looks like installer.app? The Featured icon on the left is exactly the same..

I'd almost say Apple was looking at installer.app when they made the AppStore ;)

The icon itself is the YouTube icon...

The whole interface? yeah...=). So I guess we thank the jailbreakers? XD

AppStore looks nicer, though =P.

Where the &*#! are Tasks???

Screw the nifty calculator upgrade. BFD!

Seriously, this is ridiculous. I love my iPhone, but the lack of tasks is insane. Why should I manage my tasks in iCal (or any of the great task managers that sync with iCal), only to NOT have them on my iPhone? Can ANYONE out there explain the logic behind this? This is one of the most crucial features of any smart phone, PDA, whatever in my mind, yet Apple seems to think no one wants to check off his or her To-Do's from a list as he/she is out and about. INSANE!!!

I'd use my iPhone a lot more if I could track tasks. Instead, I now carry about a printed sheet (usually several) of tasks for various projects, grocery lists, you name it.

APPLE...WHY????!!!!!!!

As I have been saying for about a year now, this is a palmtop supercomputer with a phone and iPod application running on it (and a few others). Hold on tight, it's about to become "insanely great".

That is certainly what David Pogue has been writing in the NYT's. Although he hasn't gone as far as calling it a "supercomputer" - I think that iPhone is for the next decade! ;)

Don't you think this will change come June when more apps are available?

First of all, that calculator upgrade only comes with firmware 2.0. Second of all, that firmware 2.0 comes with AppStore. Lastly, with AppStore, you'll be able to do such things.

But yes, it would be nice if Apple would add that natively...

Maybe. But why on earth not include basic task management in the first place? I imagine we might see a better mail client, a better calendar, all kinds of goodies. But task management is a BASIC FUNCTION of any smartphone.

From a user interface perspective, it's stupid. Every single person I know who owns an iPhone *expected* this feature. They didn't even bother to check if the phone included it because it's so *obvious* that any smartphone would. Except the iPhone. Crazy! So, I can add tasks to iCal, but I can't check them off, much less see them, on my phone. And this makes me more productive how???

I could get over the stupidity of allowing multiple calendars in iCal, but only one on the iPhone, if only tasks were included. But, as it is now, I think the iPhone is a great phone, a great portable web pad, but a LOUSY smartphone.

New iCal button

the New iCal button in the iPhone is NOTIFICATIONS. if your on OSx... open up iCal. It's Notifications. I'd imagine once working, you'll be able to see notifications on iPhone/iTouch and shut them on and off. etc.

Not just nice. ESSENTIAL. I refuse to give Apple a pass on this one. It's just dumb. And renders the phone far less useful. Every iPhone owner I know has been very disappointed by this aspect of the phone. It's a basic function. It should have been there from day one. And the fact that Apple STILL hasn't committed to including it is, well, nuts.

Do you really think enterprise customers are going to flock to a phone that can't do something as simple as sync tasks?

And the POSSIBLE availability of third party software to handle tasks is hardly a reason to excuse Apple's grave omission.

I have to agree. Apple's inability to add even the most basic of functionality in nearly a year is somewhat baffling. I understand they were probably tied up with getting the SDK together, but how hard is it to write a conduit to allow task/note syncing. Furthermore, why did people inside Apple think this type of functionality was acceptable to be omitted at launch?

I seriously am thankful for the iPhone hackers because without them, and their jailbreaking efforts to fill in the omissions left by Apple; myself along with MANY people I know would have sold their iPhones'. You can't even forward a text, or receive a mms, or get a recurring alert, or............out of the box!

Where is the "Smartphone" in iPhone 2.0?

Why is the focus on upgrading the CALCULATOR when the iPhone is so miserably lacking CUT&PASTE and SEARCHABLE CONTACTS???!!!

IS THIS A JOKE??

I love my iPhone, don't get me wrong.
But why are these other, much more critical functions not getting addressed by Apple?

The iPhone has been sold as a "SmartPhone" and it is still years behind other phones that already have these functions. Gaming and Video should come LATER!!

One function that would be very nice is construction functions on the calculator. It would be so nice to pull out your iPhone on the job and convert ft. to in. to decimal ft., etc., and do arithmetic functions such as finding the travel on an offset or vice versa and other construction related functions.

I guarantee you a boatload of (free) conversion tools once people start creating apps with the SDK. Seems like you can't throw a cat without hitting conversion tools.

If you're so satisfied with S60 why aren't you hanging around on a Symbian forum?

:D

Possibly because I buy many devices from many companies one of which is Apple? I actually am a member of a few Symbian forums though if it's any comfort to you.

This might be fanboy-speak, but just look at the number of different and varied types of task schedulers available on the Mac. Seems to me that there is no one design or functionality that is perfect for everyone. Maybe Apple knows this and expects third-parties to fill the void -- allow them to offer a variety of methods and approaches so we have a selection to choose from. By not providing an Apple-signature task app, they are allowing developers to grow their own.

With 1500+ contacts I have, I would really appreciate a way to perform a search. It's a nightmare trying to find something buried in the notes section of a contact's info when you can't remember their first or last name. :(

I'm with you that iPhone needs search, but I have to say if you can't remember their first or last name, how do you expect search to work? LOL.

Don't you think the bazillion or so apps coming in June and thereafter is going to address this? Face it everyone. The iphone was named incorrectly....on purpose to fool the market I think. It is a mobile mac. You don't like the program that apple wrote? Then use another.

Calculator supports sideways orientation

Is the 'keyboard' going to get this feature? please oh please oh please
in all truth. i'm really used to the keyboard in vertical format. once it flips sideways, the keys all seem too far apart. slows typing way down. i don't ever flip horizontal for typing ever anymore.
