What does this mean for next year revs? They can’t shoot themselves in the foot twice? I suspect all models of the iPhone 15 will carry flagship design features and software with exception of the display, camera and finish. But A17, Dynamic Island and possibly RAM might be standard this time. Apple has got to realize people are holding onto these phones much longer. I don’t see many on 12, 13, 14 Pros all upgrading to the 15.
Dynamic Island is a safe bet on the 15, but Apple still needs to differentiate the two beyond the Pro having a better camera and ProMotion display. I think the 15 will get the A16 while the 15 Pro gets the significantly improved A17. It’s possible the 15 Ultra (former Pro Max) will get the periscope camera exclusively until the 16 Pro gets it as well.

Apple itself says that
„During the interview with the Japanese magazine Axis, Federighi, who oversees the development of iOS, said Dynamic Island represents the first major user experience change for the iPhonesince the ‌iPhone‌ X five years ago.“

So it is just a bad idea to upgrade this year and get a iP14. DI will play a bigger role in the future. USB-C is also a safe bet for the iP15 and if Apple still refuses to bring it to the iP15, I‘ll wait for the iP16 since this marks the dead end for Apple, if it wants to continue to sell iPhones in the EU.

Probably. Because the average person does not hang out in cell phone forums. They see iPhone 14, they see new with a lower price, they buy.

We’ll do far 2 of the iPhones on that list did rather well at least. I think the 14 has the 13 as it’s achilles this year in regards to close specs and identical aesthetics. Finding it at a lower price than retail would be quite a challenge too.

The XR seems to have been a success by any measure that didn't seem to come from Apple.

I think it remains the best selling iPhone along with the iPhone 6. Posters hated it on here in the usual snobby way but consumers proved specs were secondary to price. The 5C did pretty well in its day too and appeared to be everywhere. The SE was born off its success but again it was an iPhone hated on here.

The government made their bed by creating rampant inflation for 2 years straight, now they, and Apple, lies in it, and for what?

I purchased a iPhone 13 mini 256Mb last year. It supports both a sim and a eSim. I also have a iPhone 13 Pro Max 1TB. When the new "14" models came out, I wan unable to order the first day. So I watched the projected delivery dates and when they hit the time frame I needed, I ordered the iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB. It will be here next week and I will be able to do the conversion before my next trip the following week. My wife gets my 13 Max Pro and her 12 Max Pro goes to one of her four daughters and they keep trickling down thru the family.

The 13 mini had the Verizon number moved from a chip to the eSim yesterday and the UK - O2 chip from the 13 Max Pro went into the mini. Back to having two phones until I get to the UK next year and get O2 on the 14 eSim.

The iWatch 8 was a challenge to find in silver. They I realized that by choosing a bracelet that was fully adjustable with no sizes would be in stock. Bingo! Got one two hours later.

What are you trying to tell us? Have you been at Wallgreens lately? What exactly did you buy there and what did your wife and your daughters get?

I’m sure I remember Jobs returning to Apple and telling them each market segment should have no more than 2 products, e.g. MacBook Pro and MacBook (no Air at that time) or iMac and Mac Mini. Look at iPad, iPhone and Watch - how many different products there are there!

The computer side of Apple is probably the only part that comes close to Jobs’ approach.

I would wager heavily that >99% of people on earth have no idea how to differentiate any of the stuff you said. And that is a big part of what is wrong with Apple today. Even I can't even differentiate half of it. It all just became so convoluted and inseperable from marketing that I quit caring. In fact I go out of my way now to not care, because I absolutely despise the smarmy yummy fart sniffing attitude that reeks through all of today's Apple.

I agree with what you said, but I want a phone that just works and for my $$$ those are iPhones. I can separate the product from the people.

I think we can all agree that a lot has changed since the late 90's and early 2000's

Yeah... back then Apple might have only offered one or two products in each category... but the world has grown in their acceptance of computers and devices.

Now companies offer many products across many price ranges... including Apple.

Jobs' approach in 1998 might not work in 2022

Maybe so. My point was aiming at the sheer quantity of iPads, iPhones and watches. Is there a real need to sell the iPhone 13 and 14 along side each other? (For example). There’s 8 iPhone models on sale, going back to the 12 and SE. It just feels like a lot.

Like I said... it's about price points.

Is eight iPhones too many? Well clearly Apple wants to have models available from $429 to $1,100

And the only way to do that is by providing a wide range of models: four current generation and four previous generation.

iPhone 14 series is the current series... then there's the previous 13 and 12... and finally the iPhone SE.

You might think Apple's approach is complicated... but it's even worse for other manufacturers.

Samsung, for instance, has ten current and previous Galaxy S series phones for sale right now:

Galaxy S22 Ultra
Galaxy S22+
Galaxy S22
Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G
Galaxy S21+ 5G
Galaxy S21 5G
Galaxy S21 FE 5G
Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G
Galaxy S20+ 5G
Galaxy S20 FE 5G

And they have even more models across their A-Series and Flip and Fold series. There are probably 50 Samsung phones for sale right now across all their smartphone lines.

That's just the world we live in now. Companies have to appeal to the broadest range of customers at their price points.

And that means big product lines.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
