There are people who do literally that, but that is a different conversation.

I will notice. Compared to what I have now and the last gen, the device is faster, the camera is better, the screen is better, etc.

If you’re suggesting doing better things with my money, well it’s my decision. But we give — it’s called tzedakah.
I do not care about these people as well.

But if you do that, you know that the iP14 is just a placeholder for the iP15. The 14 has the same CPU/GPU as the 13. Only the iP15 will give you faster CPU (compared to 13), dynamic island and presumably an USB-C Port. The iP14 is just a joke. But of course, everyone can spent money for garbage, I just suggested that there are things that make more fun.

There’s an obvious reason why sales are supposedly down and that is the 14 and 14 Plus are hideously expensive.

Tens of millions of people who previously bought standard models are not suddenly buying the Pro models like some of you seem to believe. The iPhone 13 still exists and is sold by Apple and 25% of Apples market are currently occupying a continent where the economy is on its knees. The 14 was a minor upgrade with an increased price point and right now that isn’t a good recipe for high sales. People are keeping phones longer, upgrading to older models and doing anything they can to save money on purchases. I don’t know a single person who has upgraded to any of the 14 models this year including the £1100 and £1200 iPhone 14 Pro’s. Like all consumer products, Apple isn’t immune to losing out on markets in recession.

Apple will surely be happy selling more 'Pro' iPhones.

Apple will surely be happy selling more 'Pro' iPhones.

It depends if the extra demand on the Pro’s covers the drop of the standard models. I doubt it is to be honest especially as the Pro’s have gone up £150 this year. I don’t think ‘all’ those people buying £700 iPhones are now buying £1100 and £1200 Pro models. Demand on the whole is surely down due to economic reasons.

Apple should go back to the old ways of just making flagships.

But in 3 sizes.

In general I think most people buying a non pro would be just as fine with buying last years pro at a discount instead.

..So go ahead and create a mini pro now, thanks!

That’s what I did. A few days after the keynote for the 14’s my wife and I bought a 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max by taking advantage of the deals. I don’t see why someone would buy a 14 Plus unless weight is an issue, if they can get a 13 Pro Max cheaper. I’d imagine the stock of last years Pro’s have depleted fast seeing as costs have gone up too. I know Mac Rumours is a bit specialist, but we are in a time where people are looking to save money and not pay £1k+ on mobile phones. The industry has spent years working up to these price points but it eventually gets tiresome for consumers I think.

People are cottoning on that the premium prices of the latest phones are not worth it if the new version doesn’t offer enough new features. Especially when your energy bill looks like it will go from 70 euros a month to 350 euros a month this winter.

It will be interesting to see how much of the price stretching strategy impacts the over all iPhone sales.

Notice that in the US Apple has not yet rises prices considering inflation.

The demands of iPhone Pro and Max tells little about this.

Re-sell... even if you got it launch day, you can still return it for a full refund! Unless it's damaged, but then you'd of course be getting a smaller re-sell rate anyway. lol
I returned my iPhone 14 for a full refund and went back to my iPhone 13. There was little if any differences in the phones and it makes no sense if upgrading not to go with the Pro line for the money the iPhone 14 costs.

I just don't see the demand for any of these iPhones. I was at out Apple store on launch day morning and it was lackluster. I get the 15minute appointment window but people are just holding on to their phones longer. Yeah there are people in these fan sites that are excited but the average Joe could care less. The have what they need. Nothing new here. And Apple needs to make these PRO phones lighter. Really nobody cares about the stainless steal band. LOL

The problem is in some countries like mine there is a £250 difference between the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. I know people here say on monthly payments it’s not noticed but the fact is the upfront cost of the Pro even on contract is higher than the standard devices. Then the monthly tariff in +£10-£20. There is a significant difference otherwise up until now more people would have been opting for the Pro devices.

Everyone that doesn’t upgrade should take that money and give it to charity. I’m behind that.

I’m good with the placeholder, there is no ultimate iPhone. Might as well wait for the iPhone 20 in 2027.

Honestly anyone who buys these re-packaged iphones at these prices must be out of their minds, especially now in this period of high inflation, souring energy prices and increase in mortgage payments. If one desperately needs a new phone, your better off getting an iPhone 13 on discount (or 13 Pro Max if you want the larger size). Just my opinion of course, people can spend their money how they please.

I teach a business class (introductory for language students at a foreign university). In our textbook, Market Leader Pre-Intermediate (Unit 6, Page 54), Dr. Chris Bruton discusses how, when in a financial crisis, sales of the high-priced (premium) choice do well while the lost cost options suffer. The IPhone 14 launch is somewhat an example of this.

Why would I want a 13 pro max when a 14 pro max is a few bucks more? If one is already spending $1,000 imo you are already price insensitive.

Absolutely true. But the iPhone 14 lives between two worlds:
In the old world you have a Lightning connector and the old style notch without DI.
In the new world you‘ll have an USB-C port and Dynamic Island instead of the notch.

If you plan using your iPhone longer than a year, it is better to wait for the new world since this will be the standard for several years.

I opted for a 13 Pro Max because there was more than £200 difference between the 13PM and 14PM. Where are they selling the new model for just a ‘few bucks more’? Genuinely interested as this thread is discussing the huge price hikes on this years devices.

You say about people spending £1k are ‘price insensitive’ but all iPhone models now are near enough that price. That price might already be too much for many with the budget stretched to the maximum. Don’t assume because someone has paid £950 for an iPhone, they are happy to pay £1200-£1500.

They are too expensive and there is barely any reason to buy them over older models that are still available.

Apples product line up is a convoluted mess.

It was definitely an odd choice keeping the iPhone 13 this year alongside the 14. Both devices look identical and a certain amount of consumers will buy based on looks rather than looking into spec differences. Right now a lot of consumers are looking at price first and product second. The same goes for the Pro series as carriers are still selling the 13 Pro/13PM. If you can get a 13PM on a 2 year contract for £1200, why would you get a 14PM that starts at £1199 for the phone on its own? It’s a buyers market right now and we are seeing consumer spending habits change as a quarter of Apples market at least is in the midst of a financial crisis.

On the app store the iPhone 13 is $699, iPhone 14 is $799. People need a smartphone in today’s society, not a pro max. Imo, if you’re looking at a pro max you’re already somewhat price insensitive.

Usb-c is a non factor for me. The use out of a new phone which in one year will have different tech, is worth it over using a phone that’s older and waiting.

That’s America. In the UK the iPhone 13 is £749 and the iPhone 14 is £849. The iPhone 14 Plus starts at £949, so the prices are already against the newer models this year. On mainland Europe the costs are also as high as the UK. I bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max for the same cost if a little cheaper than the 14 Plus, so what is going to tempt people towards this years devices when 13’s are still available and offer better value for money?

My point is the cost for new devices is already close to the £1k mark and exceeds it across the range, hence why reports are suggesting demand for the standard 14 models is under expectation.
