I'd buy some tracks if it is the Beatles. :)

I don't see the problem, it would be a big announcement for iTunes.. Its funny seeing peoples reactions though.
Truly. This thread will serve as an interesting reference.

"Living is easy with eyes closed,
misunderstanding all you see."

I'm seeing people really get on Apple's case over this announcement and I can't understand why.

First off it wasn't a press release with a huge hoopla, it was a site announcement and at that, it was only posted the day before the announcement.
Second, it is kind of a big deal. Everyone knows that the Beatles are at top of Steve Job's list and one of the greatest bands of all time, for them to not be on iTunes seemed like a criticism of iTunes itself.

This sort of puts a break in the long standing issues Apple has had looming over it's head. It's a big day for Apple and many people will be very happy by this announcement.

Now where is my AC/DC...

I may be in the minority - but I have been waiting for the Beatles to come to itunes for a long time. The first album I ever purchased with my very own allowance money was a Beatles album. The very first CD I ever purchased was Abbey Road. I am pretty certain that Beatles songs and albums will dominate the itunes charts for the next week or so. This IS very big news for people my age. It may not be as big of news for the average macrumors member though, as that demographic skews a bit younger than those of us who consider the Beatles to be kind of a big deal. Some of us are so busy that we never got around buring our CD's to our computers. I for one am VERY excited! :D

So you would rather buy their music again than try and burn your current CDs to your computer? Why?

What an amazing amount of sour grapes being harvested today.

For those of you who went out of your ways to insult me yesterday, I'd just like to take this opportunity to point out that I was right. The Beatles it is. Now I'll sit back and watch my second prediction come true: The Beatles will rise to the top of the iTunes sales charts very quickly.

Non-event? Wrong.

Ok, 10 AM Est came and went...

What is going to be announced that I will never forget?

I can't seem to get to any real info over the Beatles fluff.

Come on, Apple, why are you making me wait???

That list proves what most people knew already. They were strong in the 60s and 70s, began dying in the 80s, was nearly dead, if not dead already, in the 90s, and by the 2000s, not relevant. We're already up to 2010. I doubt there are many people who care anymore, and as people have pointed out, anyone who cared enough to want the Beatles in digital format already has their CDs on their iPods.

You have a strange understanding of "not relevant," considering that the Beatles had the bestselling album of the 00's.

Non-event? Wrong.
Not a non-event. Just not very exciting, and not very memorable. I don't see people looking back and thinking "Ah, yes, November 16, 2010, I remember exactly where I was ..." 9/9/09 was a big deal, people are going to remember that even though they were "just" remasters on "just" CDs. This is just going to get shuffled into the "assumption" file - people are very quickly going to forget the Beatles weren't available on Itunes because they just assume they've always been there. I would be surprised if there weren't some people saying that today.

The Beatles will certainly go on to sell very well for Itunes, no doubt about it. There are plenty of people who just wanted this song and that song and never got them from the 14 friends who own them already, who will now buy them. I think they seriously missed the boat by not offering the Mono Box on Itunes as something really special, but I guess that's just going to be the limited box and that's all (and that's pretty cool.)

Apple is great at making mountains out of molehills!
All Apple did was quietly post a teaser on their own website less than a day before a reasonably significant announcement. It's not like they spent a few hundred million on a Super Bowl ad or blasted prime time TV and every bus station in the world with ads for the past month. Steve didn't even have to put on a turtleneck for this one. They've occasionally devoted their home page to other "events" that didn't even have commercial implications for them, such as George Harrison's death and Al Gore winning a Nobel.

Whether you like their music or not, The Beatles are one of the best-selling and arguably the most popular and creative pop-rock band of all time. Having their catalog in your store is a mountain, on the relative scale of what constitutes a mountain in the realm of online music distribution. The announcement absolutely warrants special recognition on the home page of the world's largest online music store. Outside of using the front of their own virtual storefront for this news, Apple hasn't done a thing to alert anyone else in the world or the media about it.

In fact, outside of this single mountainous thread on this molehill of a site, I doubt you'd find too many real-world folks who had heard a single thing about it. I did not arrive to the watercooler at work this morning to a chorus of "Wonder what Apple is up to...OMG this is going to be a day to remember the rest of our lives!!!"

Oh, OK.

I can now buy lossy version of music that is available already for $1.29 a song?

Thanks Apple, a day I won't forget? You got that right.

Brilliant marketing. And I thought "magical" was unbeatable.

Really?

1. Insert CD in side of iMac.
2. Wait until it ejects.
3. Tell iTunes to fetch album art.

Sheesh. Doesn't seem much more labor intensive than finding the Beatles in the (increasingly cluttered) iTunes Store, clicking 'buy' and waiting for them to download.

The advantage, of course, being that the CD gets ripped at whatever quality I want, and I don't buy again what I already bought twice (cassette and/or LP, then CD).

For what it's worth, back when I cared about the Beatles' catalogue, I ripped everything to my iPod. Haven't played any of the songs in years, though. I seriously doubt that this will be a big seller for Apple not-Computers or for Apple Records. Certainly not the level they both seem to expect given the negotiations they've put each other through.

You underestimate your own value. The action of the CD going in and out of the Mac is what a lot of people are willing to pay not to do. Let alone avoid being in front of a computer for so long.

"That you will never forget." is not a complete sentence. It bugs me to no end when when improper English is presented by a group that is trying to present themselves in a good light.

Eh, bought the entire remaster collection at the 9am opening bell at Target 9/9/09, had the entire collection in my iPod by lunchtime. Was working on other stuff anyhow so sitting at the computer almost 3 hours was no biggie.

Would have simply bought them from iTunes if they'd been released the same day. The stack of CDs remains buried on the corner of my desk from that day 14 months ago, and currently offers nothing to me over the iTunes versions. The iTunes LP format for these albums, while presently imprisoned within iTunes, is going to be sweet when it makes its way to the big screen via my :apple:TV. Wish there was a way to buy that shell separately for albums I already own.

Rise to the top? I doubt it. But maybe if there are that many maroons. I have a hard time believing anyone has been waiting for the digital Beatles. I'm not trashing the band -- they are historic and groundbreaking. But true fans have the remastered CDs. Why would they pay for lossy AACs? Maybe a few Gen Yers will d/l a few tunes out of curiosity, but seems to me they would have just ripped mom and dad's CDs a while back.

Err. You see the irony here, right? "English" you write... with a capital E. I think you mean "english," small e. English refers to England while english is a language. Hard being a grammer cop, ya know.

They'll dominate the top ten before the sun goes down on the West Coast today.
