Re: Apple down

elgruga> OS X available for Intel boxes

I'd love to hear your take on precisely how Apple's going to trample the
applications barrier to entry which has thwarted all alternative OSes to
date.

it HAS to ba a PDA - Jobs would never let a product die, it's not part of his ego (ie: neXT cube, then G4 cube). That Newton has got to still sting, and the Palm platform on Mac has just not been up to par. I totally agree with the assumptions about more flat panels, it's time for the iMac to be seriously overhauled, and 1 gig processors also have to be in the mix, but there just has to ba a PDA in there somewhere. And you must admit, all those nice little goodies rolled into one Expo certainly does live up to the hype.

Instead of a dual-800 Mhz system, perhaps a quad-1.2 Mhz system -- with g5 chips.

Ain't nothing like that for a PC world, eh?

Apple to buy...

Note: None of this is true. Names have been changed to protect the author. All of this is parody, and

Appel computer announced today, that in a surprise conference, that Microsloft is selling its Windohs divison to Appel.

The grapevine is stirring after a comment by Bill Gaytz was leaked. "This is the best deal I've ever done. It gets the DOJ off my back, millions more in my pockets, and all for something that was 95% Appel's to begin with."

Appel has announced a two year migration plan for users to move to Mac OS X. Steve Johbs was heard saying "Why would we want to support such a piece of crap? Mack OS X is better in every way, and we think that users are going to go out and buy our brand new G6 (we skipped a generation) boxes.)

An Inhel spokesperson, speaking in regard of this announcement, has said "Oh, $#!t, we're screwed"

Linnus Torvohlds has stated that this is a perfect time for those wishing for a crappy interface to move to Linnux.

Larry Elllison realized that he wasn't ever going to be the richest man, as Gaytz is _way_ ahead of him now.

Steve Balhmmer wet his pants.

think different

iMac/Tablet PC/Rev 2 ---> I seeded this one a few weeks ago and it seems to have taken root, but in all honesty, it was what I - as a product manager (which I am - not at Apple though) would make. I actually did some pricing and think that a solution like this could be built for <1500 retail.

Other ideas:
New line of 'connected' Consumer Electronics? No wires!
-I think Apple wants to move away from a pure computer manufacturer into a much bigger market where their design creativity can be even more appreciated.

OSX for x86
-my dream. I have a lot invested in Wintel - I would love it to be Mactel!

think different

re: OSX on Intel

I think that MS would actually support this. .Net does not require an MS OS to use as it is an ASP model. Future revenue for MS hinges on the success of the .NET initiative.

XP has proven that the OS business is drying up. How do you differentiate your product when everything is already built into it? More screensavers? An Office suite?

So, it would not hurt MS business as their focus is already shifting. The added benefit would be that the DOJ and States would lay off. MS has deep pockets, but they would rather spend all that cash on a media company.

"as opposed to postage-stamp sized and studdering like a virgin in a stip club"

hahaha. so true MichiganJS. I hate watching that tiny, choppy one-inch screen. Last MWNY, TechTV broadcasted the entire presentation, but too bad for me I don't have TechTV. Hopefully that lapse in Apple.com the other day means they're updating the servers to open up the bandwidth a little more for the millions of people who will be watching. Maybe this time it'll be a two-inch viewing window with a little less interruptions.

OS X on intel machines

Well, I dont know the tech details....but I dont need to; this IS a rumor site, right?

Anyway, theres this co. (apple) with 2 OS's, one thats perfectly fine as it is for high-end consumers (9) and one thats an attempt to move into a different area of computing (pro's, servers, etc).

Selling a verson of OSX on Intel doesnt hurt OS9, and doesnt hurt equipment sales for Apple - good equipment is always desirable, and very few computer co.'s make good equipment (apple, sony, ibm sometimes).

OSX has its own applications being developed for it, so no need to think about 'porting' and all that.

Anyway, no other company ever gets us all so excited about possible future products.

If it wasnt for Apple, I wouldnt use computers.
I am not trying to start a war, but I'd rather use a pencil and notepad, a sketchpad, and a calculator than use Windows.

1.5 ghz speeds - and thats a definite.
1.0 ghz Tibook - and thats for sure.

I'm thinking the big announcement could be one of a couple of things:

1) OSX on intel, and the ability to run wintel apps natively under OSX both for Mac and Intel hardware. This would be the magic kick in the nuts that could take MS down.

2) Some convergence device. It would be similar to a Tivo, but with a snappier interface, CD/MP3/DVD/MPEG4 support, and an Airport/Ethernet/Firewire interface. It would be the be all, end all of TV devices, and seriously kick ass.

3) Remember the rumors flying around a new titanium care for the G4 towers? It will probably pop up here.

4) I seriuosly doubt a PDA. There is sooo much competition in the market now from Palm and others, that even with NewtonOS, it wouldn't be worth it to try and design somethign and get it out to market.

5) Definitely LCD iMacs. This is a must. If they don't have them now, it wouldn't be worth bringing them out.

6) Intel/AMD mac hardware. With Motorola being all sketchy as of late, I wouldn't be suprised to see Apple contract out a RISC-ified version of the Athlon XP. Of course, if Moto came through with a seriously kickass G5, then all would be saved. I still give this one 50/50 though.

7) Besides whatever "big thing" we'll all see in a few days, I forsee a complete feature revamp on the whole lineup. The iBook will be getting a low-end radeon, and possibly a slot-loading drive... maybe a larger screen (13", higher rez too). The TiPB will get the Radeon 8500 and faster slot-loading drives. Perhaps it will also be a dual-proc box... I don't know. The G4 Tower will either be G5-ized, or pick up the Apollo G4s running at much more than 1ghz. The iPod will get some accessories, and maybe some new software for the PCs. Also, RAM, HD, and proc speed bump ups all around.

8) QT6, will be sporting support for MPEG4, and hopefully fix that little AVI bug. (sign the petition at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/qtavi/petition-sign.html)

9) Steve Jobs will come to my house with a large box containing verious Mac goodies to show his gratitude for me writing this big list of genius ideas that he will make millions with over the next few years.

On the contrary, OS X is intended as a unified solution. If Apple makes a
PDA, bet on a cut-down OS X. If Apple creates a rackmount, count on it
running OS X Server.

>Selling a verson of OSX on Intel doesnt hurt OS9, and doesnt hurt

How do you come to this conclusion? Mac OS is one of the compelling
features which makes people use the Mac. Take it to another platform and
wave goodbye to any revenues, unless Apple charged something ungodly for
the privilege. Apple relies on its hardware revenues to develop Mac OS,
among other things.

Cocoa apps could be brought across with a recompile, or even shipped as
fat binaries. However most stuff is Carbon and will be for a while yet.
Carbon will be with us for a long time yet.

>1.0 ghz Tibook - and thats for sure.

Precisely how did you come up with that one?

25 Anniversary Mac?!

In 1997, Apple created 11,601 "20th Anniversary Macintosh's" that I had the pleasure of owning for a few years.

(yeah, for some odd reason, that's the number of machines that were made, according to my best sources)

Whatever one thought about that machine (now 5 years old) there was nothing like in on the planet. In its day, it couldn't be touched for sheer looks and sound. And Steve had nothing to do with it.

Now that Steve's back, and we're entering the 25th Anniversary of Apple Computer, I wouldn't be suprised to see a machine that relfects the thoughts behind the 20th Anniversary edition, albeit more "reasonably" priced than the 20th was on introduction, and made in a larger quantity.

The mind reels at what the designers at Apple could put out given the resources for such a "special" machine. That is one of my hopes for this years' Macworld.

Oh, that, and a combo PDA / Cell phone with the Apple logo on it. *sigh*

Did I miss something?

This is the second time in 2 days that someone suggested that Mac and Sony were going to merge or form a partnership. Anyone know anything about this? It might help Apple get OS acceptance and compatibility with elelctronics, but whats in it for Sony? Dont they already make a nice profit on their-second only to Apple in style- laptops?

I think they are announcing G4 ibooks with combo drives, G4 iMacs, G5 Powerbooks, G5 Towers, all running over 1 GHz, with increased bus speed (like 266 or 400 or something)--also, all model ship with minimum 256 MB RAM and Radeon graphics cards. And prices cut across the board. All machines are pre-equipped with Airport 2 (backwards compatible with Aiprport, but 10 times faster) And the formation of AppleGames--a subsidiary of Apple which obtains game and entertainment licenses from great PC games and ports them to the Mac, faster and more stable, with more features. Also, Apple obtained WordPerfect license, and is releasing a Mac version of the PC's WordPerfect Suite for 200 bucks...

Uh, right.

Here's a wild guess. Apple has acquired rights to Polaroid's new Opal Technology. An inexpensive set top box will print out large format prints of your favorite photos. Rather then using current ink jet or dye sublimation processes, Opal has all the inks in the paper itself. Colors are fantastically bright and lush with a typical 8X10 print costing about 75 cents (half the price of other types). Prints are finished in minutes. This is a non-silver based technology.

What about the G5?

I am hearing conflicting reports on this puppy. Any news? I read something on Motorola's website confirming its existence. But the question du jour is will there be PPC 8500 Macs at MWSF?

What about apple site and mail server's down? this is a very significant sight... ( however, these are not always down )
We can feel it, something is coming... we all know that 🙂 but i just want to say that they are preparing something huge. they do that in order to excite us... well, as far I know , it works well..! I think that keynote gonna be much more big, much more interesting, and will release some products that we never expected to see before... I'm pretty excited by what's going on!! Now I wonder what they will say on apple.com for the 5 days left panel. Let's see tomorrow

Sure, G5 will be there, if it's not the case... well ,so i'm not sure that i'll be blown away.. and it won't be so big after all!

Come On.. .OSX on PC? (Plus my predictions)

I usually find myself surfing around the Mac Rumor sites looking for any inside information. I am lowly PIII 600 user, and I plan to buy a mac for college. But, I have a feeling we are no longer discussing rumors or seriously speculating future products.

I would be the first one to beg for OSX on a PC platform, but come on guys, let's be serious. Why has Apple been so effective in implementing hard-core pro apps like Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro, etc? It is because they have total control over the hardware. They know that every computer they ship has at least one firewire port and a certain archetecture.

If Apple ships OSX for Wintel/AMD, they lose all certainty of the architecture. They cannot engineer an OS for each and every architecture / chipset and not turn out crap. That is why Windows has traditionally been less effective and runs so differently on each computer. It is a generalized bastardized version of an idea.

In this lies MacOS's great power: The HARDWARE fits the SOFTWARE, rather than the SOFTWARE fitting whatever HARDWARE the OEM decides to put in the box. Rarely can you find such an effective combination.

So, after my speech about OSX, I think I'll put in my two cents about what I expect.

*New iMac. I would guess it is a flat-panel, but beyond that I don't know. I think the idea that I have been hearing about it being a sort of wireless tablet is a great idea, but I hope it does not manifest itself. This "tablet" concept seriously limits the screen size. You couldn't carry a 17" monitor around with you very effectively.

*No G5. Maybe S Jobs will discuss it a bit, maybe even pre-orders. I doubt g5s are ready to ship. Apollos, yes. G5s, no.

*No PDA. Again, whoever said that S Jobs doesn't let product lines die needs to alter their statement to this: "S Jobs does not let product lines concieved by him die." If it is a PDA, it is NOT NEWTON. That was Sculley's baby. He was taken away by the idea of a PDA. Read his book... You'll understand what I'm saying. He was totally obsessed with the idea of a PDA. Jobs won't revive a program that was implemented quite ineffectively AND that was concieved by one of the principle architects of his removal from the company in the 1980s.

*iPod Update. I am guessing maybe a bit more space to compete with Creative's Nomad.

*iDevices. Possibly one or two. Maybe a miniDV camera, set-top box... Who KNOWS? These devices are going to be ULTRA cool, that's for sure.

*Product line update. iBook gets a 200-300mhz power up, plus some power up in the graphics arena. TiBook at least goes above 700mhz, possibly with a new graphics processing unit (GPU). Power Macs in a 1.6ghz, 1.2ghz, and 1ghz (It really will be something like 997mhz, but they sure as hell won't leave a Pro product under 1ghz... I think even Apple is sick of the "Megahertz Myth" stuff...) I'd also guess some differences will occur in Studio Displays after MWSF. Possibly a little bigger? Maybe an ADC->VGA adapter or something.

*Updated Appleworks, hopefully as close to compliant with Office as possible. This is nescessary for adoption to occur...

*iMovie 3. Faster rendering, more effects, etc.

*Discussion of OS X 10.2

Okay, I think that about does it for me. I'd appreciate any comments. I tried to leave out any of my hopes in my predictions... I tried to be realistic. Happy New Year everyone!

New Apple Store Layout

Anyone noticed the new layout of the Online Apple Store?
With a new category 'Solutions'.

Seems like Apple is going to provide us with a new, big, solution...

i don't know about you guys...

i don't know about you guys...but I'm staying up until Midnight to see what the next thing Apple's site says.

Wooo hoo! Can't wait.

My predictions

Apple is going to do something like Sony.
The high-end iMac will be a 667MHz G4, 15' LCD, 60GB HD, 256MB DDRRAM, DVD/CDRW,
ATI Radeon 8500 64MB DDR w/TV Tuner, 4 FireWire, Gb Ethernet, 2 USB 2.0.

The High-end Powermac will be a 2 GHz G5, 100GB HD, 1GB DDRRAM, 6x Superdrive, nVidea GeFORCE3 64MB DDRRAM, TV Tuner, 6 FireWire, Gb Ethernet, 6 USB 2.0.

MAYBE

A couple things I forgot...

...on the "what do we know for sure about MWSF" topic.

Rumor (It might have been confirmed, I can't remember): Radeon 7000 and 8500 mac edition released

Likely: Quicktime 6 announced/released

I think the LCD iMac will have a Radeon 7000 in it. Here's my guess at the top-of-the-line one's stats:

•1Ghz G3 (750fx)
•512k Level 2 cache at processor speed
•Between 384 and 512MBs of RAM (DDR 2100? The 750fx has a 200mhz system bus)
•80GB Hard Drive
•Radeon 7000 w/ 32 or 64MBs or RAM
•DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
•15" LCD display
