Why so much time on iLife and not iWork[?]

Because he had been demo'ing Keynote all morning and there isn't really much new in Pages? The main new feature in both applications is the 3D charts, tables and masks. Looks like the beginnings of Numbers.

June: Dual core and dual-dual core Conroe-based Mac Pro
That would be great! But the latest info I seem to find is that Merom is due in July-December 06, and that Conroe will come AFTER Merom but also in 06. That makes me think August is the earliest date for Conroe, and that later is likely too. Is there any newer info that looks more hopeful than that? I'd love to have a Conroe PowerMac sooner rather than later :)

You know, as mentioned by several other members (and some of my friends), the current MacBook Pros are way overpriced for the "power" that you get. The price/power ratio just doesn't even itself out. Hopefully if/when the 12" and 17" MacBook Pros are released, we will see a decent price drop. Right now, the MBPs are just way too overpriced.

Besides, as a student whose major is psychology, maybe I don't need dual core power? I may just settle for the succesor of the iBook, but I'm still not sure at this point...

Don't forget people that Steve Jobs has cancer, and getting sick in any fashion is ominous.

He HAD cancer. The operation took care of that...unless it comes back and I'm sure with his money it's being monitored.

Things to wait for:

Apple DVR media center
AirportXpress A/V
New Isight camera
Large Cinema display and update Final Cut Studio applications (possibly at NAB)
Larger capacity video Ipod. (80gig?)
Larger capacity Ipod Shuffle

Now the plasma rumor even though I would love to have one, I think is not feasible. Pioneer Elite 50" and 42' are one of the best plasmas out there. They are going on retail for over $6k for the 50". Now, how can Apple launch a 50" plasma with maybe a computer on it for $3,5k as rumored? I am sorry, it's hard to believe. I know Apple, if they jump on this they will try to offer the best plasma display, so the price point doesn't make sense.

Cheers

my hope is that apple unveils humility

their last ad, though extremely artistic and beautifully shot, was a weird shot at intel and the pc industry, especially considering that many of steve jobs gorgeous pixar movies were made on intel farms.....it's a pretty insulting ad, and doesn't make a whole heap of sense in that apple is choosing to now use these chips...far better to show what you do great then say what some one else has supposedly done badly...

I thought this too when I saw it.

The it hit me: Apple is positioning themselves as the computer you enjoy.

Windows won at the office. Not many people like their jobs, most live their
lives before and after work. Apple's tackling those great majority of people
who don't want to extend their work time by going home to a Windows
system.

Hey, I was coming here to post that same link

Here's another , this one from MACNN with a discussion as well.

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=280959

At the company's press conference at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, Dell offered a brief sneak peek of a concept mobile PC belonging to its XPS range of high-performing hardware. Although not scheduled for commercialization, the concept offers a tantalizing glimpse at the possible future for all-in-one high-end notebooks which could truly be called desktop replacements.

Fitted with a 20-inch widescreen display, the XPC Mobile Concept PC unfolds to reveal a full-width keyboard including touchpad and numerical keypad, which can also be removed entirely. The keyboard slides out from the lower base of the unit, which hosts a slot-loading optical drive, as well as all other components required to power a notebook.

Also present is a total of 8 speakers, one of which is a subwoofer and likely akin to that found in Dell's most recent XPS notebook, the M170.

Re the 20" notebook idea. I doubt any anonymous tips that pop up here, but at least we can say it's not impossible:

The 17" could become some other large size. An interesting thought, anyway.

I feel somewhat vindicated. I would have bet the farm that the iBooks would be first, what with the EOL and all. A 13" iBook was at the top of my list.
I sat at the Keynote, and I have to tell you it was anti-climactic... like something was not right.
Anyway.... They'll be along directly.

AI's "sources" weigh in on coming laptops:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1460

They're expecting new iBooks (probably called MacBooks) in April or later. And that additional Pro models/sizes will come AFTER that (sounds late to me).

They also claim that there are no tech issues or lack of processors holding up the MacBook Pro.

Take with salt of course! :)

Actually Nagromme, so are you. Pot and kettle much?
No I really didn't, and I wouldn't. You may have mis-read something out of context.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone using 2 or zero USB ports. I use only 1 myself! I'm defending people who are getting nearly flamed for using more than I do. It's not rare, and there's no reason I should expect them to have the same needs I do.

To say some people need more than 2 USB ports is not saying anything against those who do not. Some people are acting like only one of those 2 groups is common, and I contend that both groups are common.

True--and in the face of Merom, the Core Duo chip itself IS a stopgap... albeit one heck of a nice one :)

Yeah, from what I read Q3 '06 will be Merom's expected ship date. So, I'm guessing Sept/Oct we will see Merom MBP/pBooks shipping. I think I'll wait for those. My 1.8Ghz iMac G5 is fast enough for now. =)

What about artists, designers, photographers?

ah yes, the mythical Mac Tablet. What is it exactly that a small minority of people think a Tablet can do that say a 12" laptop can't? Hang on, I know. UPS (the Brown company) has probably the best tablet device the world! That thing rocks. It is extremely useful! Now only if I can play Solitaire on that thing:D .

I expect that professionals who currently use Wacom tablets for virtually all of their day-to-day work might be thrilled at the availability of a Mac Tablet. Using a tablet with Photoshop and Painter is so much more efficient than using a mouse. I've been wanting one for several years now. It wouldn't have to be a tablet only, but if it had a swivel or detach mechanism that could hide the keyboard while using the screen as an input device, that would be ideal. Like two machines in one. Wouldn't it be nice not to have to cram a Wacom into your carry-on bags or briefcases alongside your laptop?

I'm not saying I actually expect Apple to make one. I'm only saying that there are probably lots of people out there who'd buy it. And remember, even though Apple commands a tiny market share, a large chunk of those users are creative professionals. Perhaps this is why the Windows-based tablets haven't been as overwhelmingly successful as anticipated. I see less reason for a business person to have a tablet than a creative person.

what is so difficutl to understand...

If you have all those devices, they are sitting on a desk and most likely you don't carry them in your laptop bag. For that setup, you have a hub that uses one single usb port in your laptop and, by the way, is the only one you have to unplug when leave the office and want to take your portable with you.

Seriously, not enough USB ports in there is the lamest complain in these tread.

You've proven that SOME people don't need more than 2 USB ports. Nobody would deny that. But a LOT of people do need more, that's the point and it's a valid one.

You're making the mistake of assuming nobody should have needs different from your own.

Hmm... interesting rumor for sure. It would explain that slightly empty feeling I had after the keynote (made a post about this somewhere in the mess on the MWSF 2006 coverage thread), AND the almost suicidally boring 35 minutes Steve spent on iLife '06.

You seem to be a picky guy in your posts, so I'm picky too: It's 0.29 GHz difference, that's 13.5% slower. Anyway, it's not about the speed difference, it's that fact that they say the "fastest notebook ever", which is not true.

Where do they say "fastest notebook ever" ?

All I remember is that Jobs said "this is our fastest notebook ever" in the keynote. Note the word "our" in there.

But please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm curious too--it would be an odd thing to claim without further explanation. Maybe the "fastest notebook ever" comment merely came from rapidly-typed live reporting during the keynote. These things tend to get repeated out of control :)

Agreed in one sense: It's a MINOR complaint, in the face of a fantastic step forward in laptops.

That doesn't mean people should be slammed when they point out the complaint, it's a valid one all the same, and so I'm defending them. If they go so far as to say the MacBook Pro's not a great machine in other, more important ways, then I can't agree with them of course :)

Neither extreme position (like "MacBook is useless without 4 USB ports"... or "nobody needs more than 2") is reasonable to me. I think there's a middle ground that people can find/discuss.

The thing that convinces me is the observation about the keynote address. He went on forever about iLife and iWork that really was a lot of crap. I was dissappointed with the keynote. He gave the impression that he was plugging holes at the last minute. I am sure there is a lot more cool stuff to come. Otherwise Apple is in deep trouble. All the hype to have only two computers that really aren't much of a revolution- there needs to be more.

Not only that, he is usually more enthusiastic and energetic when delivering his keynote. But I observed in this last keynote that he doesn't have the same level of energy, does not seem prepared, seems to be looking for words, and stalling! How many times did he take a sip from his water bottle in the middle of a sentence?

Exactly. He said "the fastest Mac notebook ever" or "Apple's fastest notebook ever"...most people posting in this forum haven't even seen the keynote, as I can perceive...

Well, i did talk to a Fry's employee last monday. He said he has seen a new Shuffle. However, he said it wasn't that special, no screen. However it was a bit smaller.

Then again, the employee seemed to despise iPods. I notice a lot of Fry's employees peddling Creatives which they have displayed much better.

I still want my mac mini DVR, actually that seems to fit the description.

Creative used to sometimes have spiffs for their products. If they tried to get you to take a printout up to the register at Fry's with an item you already had in your hand, they're getting a kickback.
