i think that iphone 3 gen picture headlines above says:

Funny, curious, advanced. The new iphone is for everyone
Thiny, curious, advanced. The new iphone is for everyone

one of these 2 forsure.

But if its thiny, then does it mean its smaller in size? or is it thinner in size?

How about 'Phony, curious, advanced. The new iphone is for everyone, but not everyone will be able to afford it without a big loan!' :p

...And before you start arguing even Palm says that they are not happy with the current state and that there will be changes in the near future...

Maybe that's why the called it the "Pre", meaning they put out a preliminary version they knew wasn't complete, hoping to hook a few people into long-term contracts on Sprint before the new iPhone release. The next model will probably be called the "Post".

If the pre has a curved back, won't it be hard to type on while resting on a flat surface?

Another reason I like the iPhone a lot. Even with the slight curve, you can still surf, type and do so many things while its on the table next to you. I feel like 2001 space odyssey when doing that.

I noticed that the photo shows the 3g icon in a blue box. I thought that was removed with one of the first updates?

^^ Am I the only one who can see the next frame where there are large tiretracks over it with pieces all over? :p

A digital compass is NOT like a real compass. I have a digital compass on a Hamilton watch (not a cheap trinket out of a gumball machine), and it is not reliable. A real compass relies on piece of metal that can easily spin and the magnetic waves of the planet.

As a "real" compass "uses" the magnetic field of the earth, a so called Solid state compass is usually built out of two or three magnetic field sensors and therefore also uses the magnetic field of the earth, so the idea is the same, but not the technical implementation.

i'm sorry your watch compass isn't reliable, but the digital compasses i know are no more or less reliable than a standard compass.

I'm just saying that I find it hard to believe that as amazing as the current iPhone is, and as even more amazing we are all hoping the new iPhone will be, I don't think the compass will be as great of a step forward as most people think.

i don't say you should think that people think it will be a great step forward, but, it will expand the possibilities.
i work in research of new possibilities with software and hardware and i know there will be a lot of new ideas especially with augmented reality.
i don't say the "normal" user will ever see all the ideas or will profit from a compass in the new iPhone as much as it is hyped, but who knows.

btw: the mockup is really cool and i like that home button, but i think it would be impractical.

Mossberg more than likely already has a new iPhone and he has a way of being ambiguous enough to keep people at the tips of their seats while not giving out any true NDA information. I would believe every word he says when it comes to Apple product releases.

You don't mean to say Apple *again* forgot to correct the fake mock-ups on the intertubes... Ahh, they never learn...

First of all, I think the PS mockup is awesome. Home button too.

Secondly, what's the big deal about a compass? I just don't see the appeal. I've got an awesome (and expensive as hell) Hamilton watch with a touch face that has an electronic compass. That compass just plain sucks. I don't see the appeal. With GPS, the compass feels useless. If anyone can tell me the purpose of the compass, I would love to hear it.

I almost bought that same watch! But it is battery operated and I wanted one that winds itself thru kinetic movement, so I got (an equally expensive) Hamilton X-Wind watch (being a pilot, the mini-E6B in the bezel seemed like a good idea). I was wrong, the E6B sucks more than a compass ever could and I never use it. But I got the kinetic movement watch that I wanted.

By now enough defenders of what a compass can do have chimed in. I can only add that as a differentiator for the touch, they could add GPS or compass for added utility and still have the combo of both of them be part of the up-sell for the iPhone. Personally I'd love it if the new touch got at least GPS so I could make use of the crop of running apps that monitor how far you've run based on the GPS.

found on another forum....

I'm guessing with the banner image, this and the CG that's been posted so many times, it may possibly contain these exterior features.

All 3 suspected in one post

the purpose is to sell new phones.

"ooohhh, lookie here! we have a new feature, a compass!"

this year's ground breaking feature (the compass) is just like last year when the ground breaking feature was "oooohhh, lookie here! if you put the iphone in landscape, the calculator turns scientific!"

utterly lame.
