pay attention people. the mock up you see in this thread doesn't depict a larger screen as you all say.......it's just that the borders of the phone have been trimmed down.

so no need to say "i wouldn't want the screen that big". it's not, it just looks bigger since the borders were minimalized down to almost nothing.

I'm lost as to why people would take issue if the screen WERE bigger. I would like more real estate and a screen closer to 16:9. Sorry, but looking at that picture several times now (thanks to everyone reposting it over and over ;) ) makes me think my 3G looks kinda silly with all that black border. I imagine in iPhones to come the display will occupy much more the surface area.

I wonder if it'll look like this:

We're all just assuming that's a mockup... is there some reason it couldn't be real? If it's a fake, it's very very carefully done.

iphone_blackberry_ufc.jpg

lol love that picture.

It's interesting how much Mossberg plugged the physical keyboard. I guess that really is still a big thing for some people. Personally, I use a bb curve and an iphone on a daily basis and I find the virtual keyboard much faster and easier, so a physical keyboard on the pre is hardly a plus... more like a deal-breaker.

If the pre has a curved back, won't it be hard to type on while resting on a flat surface?

That's what they said about the iPhone 3G and people are ok with typing on it now. Most people hold it in their hands and not set it down to type.

Thank you Uncle Walt, that good news to wake up to. I can't wait to grab my 32gb iPhone.

This is also faulty.

Just because that these sorts of issues have been discussed here and now that Mossberg now inserts himself into this similar speculation does not mean that Mossberg's claims are based on the claims made on this particular site.

Where does it say that his source is macrumors?

Due to Mossberg's stature, there is a certain level of credibility and veracity to his claims compared to others who would make similar statements.

Where does it say that MacRumors or any other rumor site is NOT his source?

Will Mossberg's stature be diminished and his credibility shot if ALL his claims are not fulfilled in the next iPhone release?

If all his talking points are not found within the next iPhone release, means his sources are no better than those posting the same tidbits far and wide and he is no better at prognosticating what Apple's will have than MacRumors.

Ack. It's really interesting and I can't understand it at all. I've tried several types of mobile keyboards and with the iPhone I am fastest. No single doubt about that. (On a standard keyboard I can type 280 strokes/min blind with ten fingers so I know what I am saying.)

I guess that really is still a big thing for some people. Personally, I use a bb curve and an iphone on a daily basis and I find the virtual keyboard much faster and easier, so a physical keyboard on the pre is hardly a plus... more like a deal-breaker.

Full ack. And one very important thing is always overseen: You can clean the iPhone very quick and easy with a wet and a dry cloth. Each touchscreen has to be cleaned at least every day. The very compact form makes this easy. The iPhone feels like a little brick. There are no wobbly parts on it. Nothing can easily break away. I hate those little hinges and joints on those tiny devices.

Such a "real" keyboard is a disgusting mudflap!

The fact that Walt has said one is coming soon almost certainly means there isn't one.

Sounds crazy, no? Here's my reasoning:

1. Walt is one of the three journalists that Apple occasionally trusts with products before they're released (the others being Pogue and Ed Baig). He usually gets a week or two prior to public availability.
2. Walt never, ever, ever breaks NDA.
3. Therefore, Walt hasn't seen anything.
4. If Walt hasn't seen a new iPhone, there probably isn't one being made available next week.

absolutely.

If the borders of the phone are trimmed down, doesn't that give you more usable screen to work with, in turn making it bigger than the current screen?

Battery life.

I just hope Apple addresses battery life when using 3G. It's impressive how fast the battery drains.

An interesting theory, but what it really suggests is that the new iphone won't be *available* within a week or two. It does not suggest that apple won't *announce* a new iphone at WWDC with availability some weeks later - and that's really what we've all been expecting anyway.

no, look closely, it is actually the icon of the Starmap App

Good finding! But the icon is square and that thing on the image seems to be an iPhone running Starmap. Maybe.

This iPhone will be my first, replacing my 32GB iPod touch...I'm soo excited.

Me too. But how will I get it? I have a two years contract, half a year old. Will there be a possibility to change/upgrade hardware during the runtime of the contract?

The new iPhone will be fast enough to have a very responding virtual keyboard and not curved like the "Pre".

The new iPhone will be thin. It will come in sizes up to 32GB. It will have a front-mounted camera. These things are obvious, especially based on hidden things in the 3.0 SDK that people have found. Walt Mossberg is literally telling people what he's expecting Apple to annouce and has as good an idea as all of us. He probably reads this site to get his daily fill, hence why he didn't name any source when muttering what we already know anyway. The rumours on here were probably consistent with the mutterings that he has heard (not from Apple insiders).

He only brings it up for the iPhone's defense because he is obviously an Apple fan and comparing the new Pre with last year's iPhone would be unfair, just like comparing Window 7 to Leopard would be (or Vista to Panther).

I mean - come on. Why would ultra-secretive Apple give the press the details before they've announced anything and then say to them "you're not allowed to say anything"? Wouldn't it be easier just not to tell them???!!!

There's no story here.

i dont think t-mobile will upgrade your contract, maybe if u ask very friendly ;) (don't count on it, its t-mobile! maybe with an expensive contract)
i'll buy mine in an online store here in germany, that sells unlocked italian iphones. (google for retailkey shop, they ship to austria). its just a handfull euro more than with a cheap t-mobil contract (for me).

the 'squareness' of the icon is true, but if u add the third dimension than a square doesn't look like a square anymore ;)

i don't think the iPhone 3Gen (or what ever it will be called) has an frontfacing camera, though it would be real cool!

the russian picture is still very close to what we will see on monday (i guess)

I don't know if the above picture is real but if it is anyone notice an isight green light at the front of the phone???

It should indicate the separate/additional front side camera. A thing that I would never believe that the iPhone gets a second camera only for vain self-portraits or video conferences.

But I don't understand what the word "curious" means in the text above. Why should a new iPhone be curious?

Most people hold it in their hands and not set it down to type.

Oh, I agree, but set on a table the 3g does make quite a thing to 2-finger type on. Especially with the landscape keyboard.

Plus you have a hand free for more important things, like cupping the breast of a loved one or downing a pint of stella.

Granted one might be better to concentrate attention on one thing at a time - but its a hectic world out there.

the green light could indicate incoming messages / notifications - i think it was discussed somewhere on macrumors.

"curious" has various meanings, one of them is "somesting special" or "fancy" or "nonstandard"

how hard is this to understand?

Unless Mossberg states that his source is macrumors, you cannot claim that his source is macrumors.

Information can be determined independently.

If you look up something on wikipedia and say it is so, and then I say the exact same thing, does that mean I got it from wikipedia? Of course not. For all you know I pulled it out of an archive in some library.

You simply cannot claim that there is circular reinforcement here.

First of all, I think the PS mockup is awesome. Home button too.

Secondly, what's the big deal about a compass? I just don't see the appeal. I've got an awesome (and expensive as hell) Hamilton watch with a touch face that has an electronic compass. That compass just plain sucks. I don't see the appeal. With GPS, the compass feels useless. If anyone can tell me the purpose of the compass, I would love to hear it.

If your lost on a forest, you don't need a compass or an iphone. All you need to do is look at tree moss.

Tree moss gives you the north direction.

gps can't tell in which direction u are facing if standing still or moving slowly, so an compass is needed for reliable turn-by-turn apps.
