Where do you get a new MacBook pros for $699 or even $799? I'll take two.
-Tig

I'm talking about if they were to have a 128gig iPad. It would cost about the same if not more then the macbook pro because the 128gig memory is not cheap. I'm not talking about the 64gig or 16gig iPad .

Actually it wouldnt be SO weird if Apple stopped selling the 64gb - it only stands for 15% of iPad sells...

But ofc. they wont stop selling them, but still ;)

I know the breakdown was posted the other day, but I surely can't find it today, mind sending me the link to how the iPads models broke down?
Thanks

At 15% of iPad sales, it likely accounts for a larger percentage of iPad's gross profits. The gross margin on each 64GB unit is higher (a 64GB flash module isn't $200 more than a 16GB module)

*******

Strictly speaking, there isn't room to slip backwards in data capacity... Especially with WiFi only versions. If you left your house, you'd be cut off from your cloud. At over 3GB per HD movie (which is necessary to take adv of the Retina Display), plus your music, apps, etc... you are already very limited at 16GB, and even 32.

Realistically, even the 3G/4G/LTE models with iCloud need enough storage for HD movies. Can't very well stream 3GB+ on your data plan, can you?

16GB can't last much longer... but I'm not sure flash prices are low enough yet that they'll drop it and move to 32/64/128 just yet. (they COULD, but would either take lumps on the gross-margin, or have to bump the price... I think they won't until they're forced to)

No, it wouldnt, in fact two of the 64 GB chips today cost LESS then two of the 32 GB chips two years ago when the 64 GB iPad 1 came out at $699. At apple.com they seem to imply the Macbook pro starts at $1199, so thats 400-500 more then a 128 GB iPad would be. Apple charging $100 every time they double the memory, increases the profit with each model, the 64 GB model (soon the 128 GB model) has the most profit in it.

People will downvote and fight me to the death on this, but I do not believe 128GB will exist anytime soon, as it goes against Apple's iCloud strategy.

There will be many that quote this comment and cite how they've filled up their 64GB iPad in no time, but the fact is that the general consumer simply doesn't need that much storage space.

With all of the other rumored features to be included on the iPad 3, this is just one more thing (no pun intended) that would drive costs up and margins down. It is unnecessary for most, and therefore not sensical to implement at this time.

obviously, you dont know the costs of a macbook pro. Second, an tablet is not a macbook.

Pretty close, even the new MBP is just under $1200. If youre paying $999 for an 128GB LTE/WiFI iPad3 you're also paying the same price as a MBA.

The no 64GB is one of the most unbelievable rumors.

Apple is far more likely to drop the 16GB than the 64GB.

Wouldn't it be far more believable for it to be...

iPad 2 16GB
iPad 3 32GB
iPad 3 64GB

Ipad2 8 GB
Ipad2 16 GB
iPad3 32 GB
Ipad3 64 GB
ipad3 128 GB

We will see larger file sizes with the retina display, as the Devs take advantage of the higher resolution. That's why I thought a 128GB top end model makes sense...We may yet see it...

I think we'll see 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage capacities for the iPad 3 priced at about $650, $750 and $850 respectively. I expect a standard resolution iPad 2 to remain at $499 with a slightly faster processor -- possibly updated with the A5X which may be produced at a smaller size.

I doubt we'll see a 16GB iPad 3. Text books are already as large as 2GB and games after installation are already as large as 2GB.

They're only going to get bigger when they start supporting the iPad 3's 2048x1536 display.

Wow, if your prediction is correct, the 128GB here in the UK is going to cost around £700.00...I'd better stop eating...!

650$ for the base iPad 3 no WAY.

It's more a rough guideline rather than a prediction, but yeah I expect it to be quite pricey.

That's only $50 more than what it'd cost for a 32GB iPad 2. That retina display will be costly. That's why they'll keep a 16GB iPad 2 available.

Dont think they will bump the prices this much ... IF they make a base at 32 and a top at 128 - max bump we'll see is 50$ ... prices on hardware keep on going down - and show me one single time in Apples history where a new gen of a product went up 150$... no way its gonna happen... :)

if 32GB became the base model you couldn't compare prices. 32GB would become the entry at 499, or at worst 549. You don't pay more for having the 32GB become the base since there is no other option. That's like apple only offering a 64GB and expecting everyone to need that much space.

But $650 is only an increase of $50 over the iPad 2 32GB.

The 32GB wouldn't be the base model, the 16GB iPad 2 would be the base model at $499. The 32GB model would be $650, and then +$100 for each increase in capacity up to 128GB.

That's only a $50 increase over what the 32GB iPad 2 costs, which considering the retina display, yet alone the other improved hardware, isn't an unrealistic increase in cost.

I highly doubt Apple is going to up the price of the "base" model by $150, I doubt they'll even go up $1. This new Apple has been very conscious of product affordability, and $500 seems to be the "Sweet spot" -- its where the majority of iPad sales are. So if 32GB/Retina @ 499 isn't possible, then we'll def see a 16GB version.

Not everyone (most?) cares about textbooks and I havent seen any games close to 2GB yet. Even IB2 is only 1.1 GB, most others games are well under a gig. The data released the other days shows that people aren't overloading their iPads anyway, 80% have less than 40 apps -- and they've paid for less than 10 of them.

The prices now is

And in the lowest end - iPad 2 32gb - 499
16gb - 499 - iPad 3 32gb - 549
32gb - 599 - iPad 3 64gb - 649
64gb - 699 - iPad 3 128gb - 749

3g

16gb - 629 - iPad 3 32gb - 679
32gb - 729 - iPad 3 64gb - 779
64gb - 829 - iPad 3 128gb - 879

This is what I think :D

I don't think Apple will move away from that $500 starting price point. The iPad was marketed as a tablet for everyone. Bumping that up could take them out of the starting realm.

What I'm saying though, is that the iPad 3 won't be the base model. I think we'll see a 16GB iPad 2 at $499, a 32GB iPad 3 at $650, a 64GB model for $750 and a 128GB model for $850. (I also suspect the iPad 2 will have a slightly faster processor, and perhaps use the A5X which may be produced at 28nm.)

The display in the iPad costs between $80-$120, and Apple's not going to absorb the increased cost of a retina display. And the difference between 32GB and 16GB of storage is almost nothing, the latter is about $8 and the former twice that.

It's true that Infinity Blade 2 is only 1.1GB, but Rage HD is 2GB, Modern Combat 3 is 1.7GB, Gangstar Rio is 1.7GB, etc., and there's a heap of games that are all around the 500MB-1GB mark, and that adds up quickly on a 16GB device.

These file sizes are already quite large, but when they start updating to support the iPad 3's retina display, they will only become larger.

Mmm, a 32GB iPad 3 is $50 less than what the 32GB iPad 2 costs right now. It's unlikely, considering the presumably higher cost for the retina display.

I honestly think they will price like this:

8gb/16gb ipad 2 - $400 (more likely to be 16gb because at this point flash memory of 16g isnt much different from 8gb)
16gb ipad 3 - $500
32gb ipad 3 - $600
64gb ipad 3 - $700
( obviously wifi only models)

I don't see them offering 128gb this year unfortunately Apple certainly seems reluctant to update capacities on anything.

I think they will keep the prices at the current scheme just for the fact that the competition is offering cheaper alternatives I really can't see Apple increasing the pricing scheme even with a retina screen it didn't increase the price on the iphone.

I dont see a 8 gb model being released just for the fact iOS already takes up a lot of space, however there does seem to be a market for it since the kindle fire sells with 8 gb.

I laughing out at this rumour. I cannot believe that people are even taking it seriously.

There will be a 64GB model. Bumping up the screen resolution and beefing up the CPU while cutting memory would be illogical. I would even consider the opposite. Only making the iPad 3 available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB while leaving the iPad 2 with a paltry 8GB.

Price-wise the device won't get more expensive, just like how the iPhone 4 was just as much as the iPhone 3Gs was the preceeding year.

Not that farfetched if Apple wants to push the cloud as much as possible.

They can't push, there are bandwith limit and in many regions of the world there isn't 4G connectivity. Not to mention commuters in London, Paris and New York who travel on subways that run underground.

Telecommunications infrastructure and bandwidth need at least 3-5 years of further development before being able to accomodate tens of thousands of people being albe to stream and download HD videos with ease.
