"Little Murders" w/Elliot Gould, Donald Sutherland, and Alan Arkin. The few minutes of Arkin's homocide detective rant and Gould's soliliquy about somebody reading his mail are unforgettable.

-Very, very underrated.

Really? It's #35 on IMDB's top 250, with more than 162,000 votes.

-Couple of good laughs. Has a ton of well known comedians, Jamie Kennedy, Steven Martin, Eddy Murphy, That girl from Austin Powers, Downey Jr., etc...

+1.

Idiocracy. Possibly one of the funniest films no-ones ever heard of...

+10, absolutely hilarious all the way through. Though it's shown on Comedy Central often now so it's probably not very unheard of.

Adding Ong-bak to the thread. Amazing movie.

Angel Heart
Broken Flowers
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Better Luck Tomorrow

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a brilliant film. I saw it on a plane for the first time, and burst out laughing so many times I know I must have pissed off everyone else on the flight. But staggeringly funny, and underrated.

Children of Men, on the other hand, was terrible.

Glad there's another fan of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I personally liked the premise and feel of Children of Men. Thought Cuaron did well.

On the topic of Lost Highway, how do you guys like David Lynch's work?

I personally think his stuff is genius, but many I know brand his films 'confusing' and 'pretentious.'

No, but it's overlooked.

It isn't that either. Every time this topic comes up, Donnie Darko is listed more prominently than any other title. Absolutely nothing against the movie or it's fans, but it's popularity demonstrates it isn't underrated, overlooked, or under -appreciated.

Confusing? Yes. Pretentious? Yes.

Genius? Damn right it is!!

  • Equilibrium

Agreed, ditto, +1, what have ya. Sure, a bit of suspension of disbelief is needed, but Equilibrium is a cool sci-fi action film, featuring Christian Bale before he became a household name. Howard Stern once said he liked this even better than The Matrix (not that he's a respected film critic or anything).

+1 on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I absolutely love that film.

I'm going to catch some heat for this, but...
A Lot Like Love.

Yeah, yeah - it's a sloppy romantic comedy with Ashton Kutcher in it. In everything else he's ever done he annoys the piss out of me, but I genuinely think this is a funny, well written movie in which he's not totally awful.

You may commence throwing overripe fruit now.

Okay, half-assed attempt to redeem myself:
- Slap Shot (underrated here, at least, but maybe only because there are about four other people in the country who like hockey)
- 25th Hour
- Fever Pitch (football version, not baseball version)

I LOVE David Lynch. I don't care what the naysayers think. His films are the best trip you can go on without using LSD.

Dead Alive
Lost Skeleton of Cadavra
The Mist
Unforgiven
American Psycho

Unforgiven is a brilliant, intelliegnt movie and agree also re American Psycho.

Goodnight Lenin
The Machinist

I don't know how popular they are outside of the UK but I don't know many who have seen these (though loads have heard of Goodnight Lenin).

Goodbye Lenin is great, bitter-sweet, funny and yet quite sad with a wonderful soundtrack by Yann Tiersen (same chap who composed the music for Amalie). Others I personally rate highly, which seem to be overlooked/underrated and underappreciated include:

Lone Star
Jesus of Montreal
Au Revoir les Enfants
My Life as A Dog

I'm sure others will occur to me but each of these were movies of intelligence and multi-layered and challenging story-telling. Simply brilliant, movies I have no problem watching again.

Cheers and good luck

I agree wholeheartedly that Donnie Darko is in no way underrated or overlooked. Rather, it's pretty popular.

Let me add some more (quite indie) stuff:

The Squid and the Whale
The Science of Sleep
Franklyn
Dear Zachary
Ghost Dog (Forest Whittaker = amazing in this)
