I am still amazed as just from my experience with the forums, the majority of members tend to be from the US and I would think that the same would apply to visitors

Well, if Apple's call lines were overheated last night due to 4S pre-orders, it's not surprising that MR was too :p Then add all us foreigners on top of that.

There are a few members - and interested non-members - on other continents. ;)

If you were wondering who voted your comment negative, it was me. :p

Of course I realize the global reach of this site, but seriously, provide some justification for the large number which neither coincided with a product release or the death of the founder of Apple.

I wasn't wondering - I didn't even notice. I don't pay attention to post ratings because they often don't mean anything to anyone aside from the person who cast the vote. ;) I think it was pretty obvious to most that my post was a light-hearted comment.

I don't have the answer here, but what if there isn't any justification aside from a product release and the death of the founder?

That said, I'm sure that if there is another reason, someone more involved than I in the technical aspects of running the site will let us know.

When did the :p lose all it's playfulness? Ah, well.

So is anybody able to shed any light on why the record was set on what could be considered a peculiar time given the past history of other events and their respective numbers? I guess I'm just not buying the "convergence" theory. Sorry.

It was just after the iPhone 4S pre-orders went on sale in the US and the UK Store came back on-line and started accepting orders around 8:30am GMT (12:30am PST / 3:30am EST). As I said above, it seemed like half the posters at the time were making posts in the UK iPhone 4S thread and the forum spy was spinning by at high speed.

The old record got bested by 12,000 and with the avatars turned on.

We had made a lot of changes, including off-loading the Avatars to an outside CDN. We still hit a wall though. Things did start breaking down at 46,000.

The reason for the sudden influx is that "Error 3200" was the #1 google result and apparently a lot of people had problems upgrading to iOS 5.

Fascinating. Simply fascinating.

Hope MR is able to capitalize monetarily on this massive traffic surge. Congrats on handling the loads and delivering the goods. If anybody would ever like to give a behind the scenes of how/why you planned for these events, I'm sure a lot of people here and web enthusiasts in general would love to hear the tale. Not suggesting a Pirates of the MR Valley, drama :)D) but if you ever to share your story or give an interview, please let us know. Thanks!

Over 15k already on the boards and we're just under 3hrs away from the media event. Just over 46k is the record. Judging by current traffic, I think the record falls. Guess we'll find out soon...

we're not going to break it - at least not by vb stats.

I turned on a caching system which serves the same page to non-logged in users. So the count is going to be artificially diminished.

If you had trouble logging into the forums today...

A note to anyone who got this message while trying to log in today:
Wrong username or password. You have used up your failed login quota! Please wait 15 minutes before trying again.
Don't panic. Nobody was trying to break into your account. It was a cacheing problem with our server.

Details:
We use a cacheing system for Big Event Days like today, when we know that the demands on our forum servers will be high. The cacheing system had an unfortunate side effect: a single "bad password counter" was being applied to everyone served by a single cache if someone mistyped their password. Once that happened enough times, everyone who happened to share that cache was locked out temporarily.
We fixed the problem as soon as we diagnosed it. We apologize for the inconvenience since we know that it's a day when many users have been especially anxious to use the forums.
