"wheelchair workout?" the person who wrote that does not have a mother. My mom is 73 and she just won a tennis tournament against a 37 year old mom. That match was 2 hours and a half. And she had 4 matches that day. She went to Disney with me last December and was laughing because she saw old ladies in wheelchairs that were like 10 years younger than her.

I don't have an Apple Watch yet, but I'll probably go on a walk with my mom regardless.

I'm as shocked as you. I thought they were all born from Moose and Maple Trees or something.

Your mother was a moose, and your father smelled of maple syrup!!

That is very true. I run only on a treadmill (about 5 miles) and walk (about 4 miles) several times a week, so a marathon would be an whole other animal entirely. :) Although doing a marathon would be apt, since my mom ran several marathons when she was in her forties (I'm 47, so age is a factor here).

She battled ARVD for over a decade and her condition finally got so bad last April/May that she received a heart transplant at Duke. She was walking on the second day after surgery and for five months, had a new life. Then last October she had a massive stroke and never recovered. :-(

She was an amazing woman and nurse who worked around the world to save lives. We've set up a memorial fund in her name that the the family intends to convert to a nursing scholarship soon:

that's awesome. I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing that with the community.

Yes a marathon would be a great dedication to your mom.

1 mile is nothing. I just did 3.22 miles 10 minutes ago.

on your apple watch? then it was probably less than a mile and you got lost.

are you on strava? if it's not on strava it doesn't count.

You could go on a mile-long walk with her and talk to her about what's new in her life (while secretly caring more about your proximity to receiving that rose sticker than anything she could possibly say [joking])

Got my sticker Mom. See you later. (Leaves mom standing there as you drive off). :D

I think it's embarrassing that corporations have to craft statements like this out of fear of offending a group that probably wouldn't (or shouldn't) be offended in the first place.

You call it "inclusivity" I'll call it "socially induced over-sensitivity."

I think it's more embarrassing for you that you feel this overwhelming need to get on your soapbox and whine about something so perfectly harmless.

My mom and I both have Apple watches so we can earn the badge together like we did for the earth day challenge! :D

Well, the USA is the fattest nation on Earth

On my holidays in the US at the moment. I've never seen people this shape anywhere else I've been. You could literally balance a couple of pints on those 'shelf booties'

Jokes aside it was Apple Watch. Pretty consistent in both miles and heart rate.

I don't see it out of fear of offending them-- doubt anyone would have faulted Apple for not mentioning wheelchairs. I just see it as including them as the humans that they are.

Personally, I dont like getting spammed with these 'challenges'.

IMO only those who have the activity features enabled should be receiving them or at least some kind of opt out.

Why only the United States? There are other countries in this world with this holiday :/

But not on the same day, it was March in the uk.

Another step in the infantilisation of the user, it seems to me.

Seriously, a little picture as a reward for walking?

I think it is ok to have a US only challenge, but they should have specific challenges for other countries too. It shouldn't be too difficult to implement

5K. The Thanksgiving one was 5 kilometers - not 3.1 miles - if they had intended imperial units they would have made it be 3 miles or perhaps 3.5 miles. Some news site called MacRumors even reported it as a "distance of 5K (3.1 miles)" at the time. 3.1 miles is a bit over 11 meters shy of 5K - nobody would announce/hold a "4.9889664 kilometer run", it was 5K. And measuring races/runs in kilometers is not an uncommon thing, even here in the US. Slavishly converting it away from metric is just silly - it's misreporting the news because you think it'll be easier for us to understand a dumbed-down version.

Oh great, now the rest of the world is looking at us funny. Geez.
Yes, yes we are.

I like that Apple does this kind of thing. Why not take your mother, your children's mother, or some other mother for a 1 mile walk? That's 20-30 minutes of talking (away from the kids).

For those wondering why this is a U.S. only event, it probably has to do with the fact that Mother's Day falls on different days around the globe. For example, for almost all of the Middle East it falls on the first day of Spring. In UK it was March 26.

ONE mile is a joke and it's rampant sexism. I recall that the Thanksgiving challenge was 5K. Why ONE mile for mothers day? Is Apple saying women can't run very far?? Very discriminatory!

Um, "wheelchair workout" is in no way meant to say that Moms are old and in wheelchair. It's about including those that are disabled so they can still get the achievement. They've had wheelchair workouts available since Series 2 hit.

Yes, heaven forbid we should have any fun. And while we're at it, there's entirely too much smiling. Now everybody back to work, the beatings will continue until morale impr- scratch that, the beatings will just continue.

Yes, I'm sure that was the message Apple intended, they wanted to say, "women can't run very far". The challenge is not restricted to people who _are_ mothers, not even to people who _have_ mothers.
