I'm pretty sure you've got that analogy backwards. Nokia makes mass-produced, basic-looking phones that can take a beating. Motorola is one of the leaders of style, innovation, and included features. Sure, they make some ugly phones, but if you compare the lines, Nokia has to take the cake for low-end cheap-o (or free) phones and lack of style. Just take for example, the T720 (now four years old, but a leader of style on introduction), the Vx00 series (especially the very sophisticated V600), and now the V3 RAZR. I haven't seen anything groundbreaking from Nokia...ever.
This of course applies to US phone selection. Maybe Nokia actually makes nice things for the rest of the world.
