Can it make phone calls? Although boring, it'd make huge difference with or without the function. Why it's not mentioned?

It can. Not sure why you would want to do that though.
And as to why it's not mentioned... we are on a Apple site

----------

I do have one question I would like to ask here.

So may are seeing these new watches from Samsung, LG, Motorola etc, and to a large degree rubbishing them.

Personally I feel this is a bit unfair as it's like going back 20 years and saying how junk a mobile phone looked from the perspective of today.

Likewise, in 20 years time tech will have moved on so much that I'm sure wearables will be amazing, but they are working with what they have to use today and today's ideas.

My Question:

As so many ARE expecting Apple to blow these devices away with their smartwatch.

What is the reaction going to be here, when all Apple show of is a enhanced, and nice looking Sport/Heath Nike Fuel Band type device?

Do you think this may be in reality all it will be?

Personally I hope it's amazing and a lot more, but I do wonder if there simply IS NO "SmartWatch" coming from Apple.

I hope I'm wrong.
Because of the magic powers of "fan vision" it'll still be awesome and categorically superior to the competition because reasons

I dont mind a few of these stories but this is a mac website and unless it worked with any apple products why is it really here. If apple is on its game after jobs and this watch reinvents the smartwatch all other companies will copy apple just like the original iphone. There was nothing like an iphone when it first came out. Blackberrys were nothing like it and were probably the most boring smartphone on the planet, they were not even fun to use till apple came along. No one cared about tablets till ipad came out too. Right now no one cares much about these watches either except tech geeks but if anyone can make it a hot item apple will. and apple hired people from yves saint laurent and tag heuer from what we heard online so it should not look like something a tech repair guy wears. Cant wait

All these smart watch announcements this week-- they seem like panic moves in Apple's wake. Is there another interpretation?

Competitive products impact the market share, and thus the viability, of Apple products. Which should matter to an Apple fan.

Since when did companies think a 1 day battery life for a watch is anywhere near acceptable? People do not want to be charging their watches daily. This isn't going to take off until they can at least start providing weeks of battery life.

You charge your phone daily, if you have a smart phone, I would guess. Just because people haven't had to that before, it doesn't mean they won't do it now. After all, people did have to wind their watches every day, at least, at one time (not that winding is 100% analogous to charging). But the benefits of the watch have to be greater than the added inconvenience.

I do not think you need weeks at all, or close to it. Longer is better, and 18-24 hours is minimal; but 48 hours would be the point of diminishing returns for extended life.

Day on Jupiter?

If you read the fine print I presume you'll find they are referring to Jupiter, not Earth.

Seriously though, whatever convenience you gain from having a device on your wrist is diminished by having to charge with a custom charger twice a day. Also, I don't want a watch that needs me to press a button to show the time.

My god, can you imagine anything less than "all day" battery on a companion device? If the watch's battery doesn't outlive the phone, I'm left carrying deadweight.

15 years ago, when you might of had a Nokia phone, which lasted a week to 10 days on a charge and someone told you there was a new phone coming out which was new but needed to be charged every single day, and may not even last a day if you use it a bit.

I wonder what you would of said?

If you would add to that question... Ohh you would also be able to use your phone as a gps, check emails, do video calls, and basically majority of things your computer can do remotely then losing 9 days isn't so bad.

No one is stopping you from using that old technology that can't even take a photo.

my rolex dont even need a battery to last 2-3 life times

if apple cant make something like this, then swiss watches will always rule the market!

Familiar bezel

In the silver/steel version I was thinking the chunky bezel looks familiar. Then in that video, where the 2 bezel parts are sitting on their own, I realised they look like cock rings.

Give me a watch with 2-3 day battery life, then I'll be impressed.

It seems like nobody here actually remember of Pebble which has 1 week battery life. Even if it's e-ink, it's a proper smartwatch which is iOS compatible and looks fine enough. I don't see the issue with it.

Seriously man!? Every company on earth uses simulated screens INCLUDING APPLE. Get over it.

Still looks really bad here.

reviews from all over are slamming the hell out of the Moto 360 watch battery life, even one guy said he had to charge it TWICE in one day.

People in here are just haters...

This is a pretty good looking device and even more so when you compare it to the other watches that are available. There is also a pretty big community behind it to make apps and the like that will make this watch and all android wear devices very helpful and convenient. Of course it has to be tethered to your phone. If you think Apple is just going to release some super computer for your wrist I would start being let down now. If it can do half the things this watch can do I am sure it will be tethered also. It is suppose to be used as an extension of your phone. So you don't have to pull it out all the time. It is very helpful... Say if your spouse sends a quick text to pick something up or just say hi. It make it so you don't have to go unlock your phone to look/reply to a short message.

I currently wear a watch and carry my phone how is that any different. Honestly right now I maybe look at my watch a few times a day so it would be nice to wear something with some more features. I am also excited to see what Apple shows. Not expecting it to release before 2015 just because if it was I am sure we would have some pics already floating around.

I do agree with most of you though that the battery life is an issue. I wouldn't mind a full day of use but at least give me that. I shouldn't have to charge it in the middle of the day. 12 hours from recent reviews is horrible.

TLDR: Some of you are haters and really need a hug. The watch is really nice compared to what else there is. A lot of you are going to be really let down if you think Apple is going to release some super computer for your wrist that is thinner, lighter, better battery, and doesn't need to tether to your phone.

The Verge review said circular displays are the right form factor. Other than circular perhaps looking more fashionable (and like a traditional watch) I find that hard to believe for anything other than displaying time or maybe something simple like steps, heart rate, etc. How can a circular display be better for viewing notifications, texts, maps, email, etc.?

I agree. A rectangular shape would be more usable surface area.

An Apple 'iWatch' may also not have GPS.

Any notifications are accessed through your GPS equipped iPhone. This forces you to purchase both smartphone and watch.

iWatch very well could potentially destroy the smartphone watch competition this year with a customized SoC designed straightly for the iWatch designed by Apple like how they make the Apple A7/A6 etc for their iPhones.

No doubt in my mind the iWatch provides alot better battery life then all current smartwatches out there right now

a 20nm custom designed iWatch SoC (ill call it Apple W7 as a example) will absolutely blow away these Snapdragon 400 cores used in current smartwatches today, absolutely blow them away, and a possible use of OLED in the iWatch screen which saves a ton of battery
