What's with these names, anyway? Do they stand for something?
It's ultra-1337-speek. RAZoR, ROcKeR, SLiVeR, PEBbLe. You mean you're not impressed by the hipness of it all? :D

if you guys look closer you will see that this phone is actually thinner than the RAZR, which is already really thin. So this is no not the best, and no not good enough for me to get rid of my 710a from Sony Ericsson, but it does look lightyears ahead of the ROKR.
If you're DRM free like me, the s710a plays normal AAC's of pretty much any bitrate. You have to manage the folders & tracknames yourself (no itunes interface or autofill) but it's doable. The headphones that come with it put out okay quality sound as well. The duo pro memory slot is capable of accepting 128MB cards, but I've heard of people hacking the phone's firmware to have it accept much larger. Hopefully a reliable, stable one that does will come out soon from SE. Until Motorola comes out with an EDGE compatible phone that supports both IMAP and POP w/encryption and has a screen that's 240x320, I think the s710a will remain superior.

Motorola Verizon Bluetooth phones have not historically had a full implementation of BlueTooth, because apparently Verizon is willing to trade customer satisfaction to prevent the "lost sale" of me making my own ring-tones.

Before anyone gets it, make sure it can do what you'd like to do. If, for example, you want to transfer your address book to your car or to your Mac, make sure they haven't disabled that function.
There's a really good thread somewhere around here on MR about how to get around Verizon's disabling of the OBEX protocol preventing it from using isync....searching....

Edit: Okay....the one here on MR is somewhat incomplete, so I'm sending you to a thread on macosxhints. Make sure to read through the updates for the various versions of 10.4.x to find out what you need to change to make it work. Worked on a friend's v710 for about half an hour but got it to work.

Talk about dropping the ball on this one. You can obviously tell that Apple, more or less, jumped in the music/cellular market because it was simply obvious that it was/is going to take off. Creating a device that does multiple things, such as this, should really have been a pinnacle product. Instead, it's laughable.

Maybe its the fact that Apple didn't make it and has NO experience designing or creating cellular phones. the phone was Moto's baby and they not only dropped it but dropped it on its head and beat it with an ugly stick.

Compared to MP3 players cellular phones are an order magnitude more complex. And then there is the simple challenge of getting carriers to actually pick up an iTunes phone. A device they know will kill any chance for them to launch a music store.

What do you mean the next RAZR? It hasn't been released or announced yet as far as I know.

The unreleased RAZR has appeared in FCC files and on both Gizmodo and Engadget. Motorola does a terrible job keeping phones secret.

The new RAZR 2 has a 2MP camera plus a small second camera for videoconferencing. It comes in dark blue and silver and the M logo glows. TDo a Google search on it and see what comes up.

Agreed... hmmm, I wonder if the PEBL will have iTunes on it?

I strongly doubt it. The PEBL doesn't have a built-in transflash slot, unlike the SLVR. (See specs here)

It is also interesting to note that on the Cingular page, at least from my zip, the price of the ROKR has fallen to $149.

The SLVR is a pretty cool phone, but the upcoming Nokia and Sony Ericsson music phones have seem more well thought out.

I don't understand why they (someone, anyone) doesn't come out with a phone, that holds a bunch of music, and has a decent PDA. How about a palm powered PDA, that plays music? who wants to carry a palm, an ipod, and a phone? A headphone jack is a basic feature my 5 year old cel-phone had.

this phone doesn't sound like it does one thing well:confused:

Haha I think they're kinda lame. I'd rather they have a "Motorola X5138" instead of ROKR. Besides. What if you're not a rocker? I don't see a RAPR or a... I don't know... what if you love classical music? A CLSCL??

Bah. Anyway.

Completely off topic, but if I get a 17 PowerBook and within the first year the screen explodes or something, they'll replace it right? Free?

PS. By exploding I mean crazy malfunctions and such that I've been hearing about around here.

Um, how hard is it to put iTunes on a flip phone?

Ok, so like, it's really hard. But, c'mon people. Flip phones.

This is all backwards, we dont need iPod features on cell phones. We need CELL PHONE features on iPods!

Why did Apple have to team up with the cell phone maker that makes the worst and ugliest phones of all.

I was thinking SiLVeR and wondered why it was black. :D

It's not really a secret, it's how MOTO builds up its products.

I guess no one noticed this earlier...oh well...:(
Hm ... yeah ... creds to you :)

I'm not sharing the enthusiasm some seem to have over the RAZR style keyboard. It looks ugly to me and it must be terrible to use because it must be harder to find the keys by touch.

No worries; we're all a community here after all. :)

Yeah, when I saw that I thought "Wow, finally a RAZR iTunes phone." Then I saw it was still a candybar phone. Doesn't seem like that much of an improvement, but at least it looks like a recently-made phone. Maybe I just don't use cell phones much, but don't the keys seem awfully small?

I wish they'd put it in a nice, cool, slim phone that doesn't have a camera. Phone+iTunes seems like enough complexity, and I don't think the jack-knife approach for cell phones ultimately makes the most sense.

I think it looks just as ugly, if not more, than most other Motorola phones. Not only do they have fugly cases, but the UI in general is hopeless and poorly designed. The fact that it has iTunes on it, makes Apple look bad.

Apple should either design their own phones from scratch, which i'm sure would be awesome, or team up with a company that produces better mobiles (Samsung have some great designs).

I definitely won't be buying one in a hurry!

I've actually seen this phone in person over half a year ago (without the iTunes software) and it looks VERY nice! The pictures do not do it justice!!! It is thinner than the original RAZR. I do remember they said about the transflash thing but I swear the guy said it was going to have a 2MP camera and not VGA? I guess half a year does that to it.

BTW, the ROKR is $149 with a 2 year contract, $249 without contract as of November 1.

far better looking than the ROKR. might consider it if wasn't motorola...

please, people, stop knocking bluetooth headphones. i have some and they're just as good as wired. never had trouble.

:D
